A black comedy on the human condition, this book presents Vladimír Páral’s darkly comic vision of life in an apartment building that is owned by a chemical factory. The downtrodden residents struggle and scheme to move into better apartments using sex, violence, and deceit to get what they want. In the process, it becomes apparent that they are no better and may be worse than those that they have pushed aside. This novel brilliantly asserts that ideologies may change, but human nature never does.

About the author

Vladimír Páral, pseudonym Jan Laban, je spisovatelem prózy. Pochází z Prahy jako syn důstojníka. Brzy po jeho narození se rodina přestěhovala do Brna, kde prožil dětství, studium na reálném gymnáziu a první rok na brněnské technice. Nakonec se však rozhodl pro chemii a vystudoval vysokou školu v Pardubicích. Stal se inženýrem.

Po ukončení studií pracoval Vladimír Páral v chemickém průmyslu postupně v Liberci, Jablonci na Jizerou, Plzni a Ústí nad Labem. Při tom psal a když již měl za sebou několik úspěšných románů, chemický obor opustil a stal se v letech 1967 - 72 spisovatelem z povolání.

Od roku 1972 do 1979 pracoval jako redaktor Severočeského nakladatelství v Ústí nad Labem a nyní se opět věnuje psaní.

Od roku 1995 žije střídavě v Praze a v Mariánských Lázních.

Lovers & Murderers is not easy to read. The style feels somwhat prolix at first. But it is worth to perserve and delight in the idiosyncratic style, immerse yourself in the everyday characters, living ordinary lives, whilst misbehaving, wittily pushing themselves up the greasy pole of life. The book covers at least two generations, satirising Soviet-style Socialism , whilst also showing how it could be exploited. Páral, in normal circumstances, should be a Noble prize contender, but his "support" for the post-68 Czech regime tarred his reputation after 1989.

Asi jsem čekal trochu něco jiného. O Páralovi se často mluví jako o "autorovi knih z chemického prostředí", což je minimálně u této knihy zbytečné tvrzení, protože tam o chemický průmysl takřka vůbec nejde (a jedná se spíše o kulisu). Věčný styl psaní, antirománový formát "kdo jsem" narušující jinak osobně a dost citelně zabarvené vyprávění postav dávaly románu zajímavý rozměr. To ale nemění nic na tom, že příběh byl dost repetetivní a že některé scény byly až zbytečné nebo přehnané.

It was interesting, it was funny sometimes. Characters were weird but believable and whole book was redeable. I was really not excited about it but it was OK as a compulsory school reading. Btw. the only likeable character for me was Yveta, daughter of Borek and Jana Trojan.
