James Leasor was a prolific British author, who wrote historical books and thrillers. A number of Leasor's works were made into films, including his 1978 book, Boarding Party, about an incident from the Second World War that until that time was secret, was turned into a film, "The Sea Wolves", starring Gregory Peck, Roger Moore and David Niven.

Thomas James Leasor was born at Erith, Kent, on 20th December 1923 and educated at the City of London School. On leaving school, whilst waiting to join the army, he had his first foray into journalism, as a cub scout reporter for the Kent Messenger.
He volunteered for the Army in World War 2, as soon as he was old enough. He was commissioned into the Royal Berkshire Regiment and served in Burma with the Lincolnshire Regiment.

After the war he went up to Oriel College, Oxford, to read English. There he edited the Isis magazine, before joining the Daily Express. He became a full-time author in the 1960s. He also ghosted a number of autobiographies for subjects as diverse as the Duke of Windsor, King Zog of Albania, the actors Kenneth More and Jack Hawkins and Rats, a Jack Russell terrier that served with the British Army in Northern Ireland during the Troubles.

He lived for his last 40 years at Swallowcliffe Manor, near Salisbury in Wiltshire. He died on 10th September 2007 and is buried in the churchyard of St Peter’s Church, Swallowcliffe.

This was a surprise read which has now propelled me in to wanting to learn more about James Leasor and his work including the stories of Doctor Jason Love.

I stumbled over his work while looking at a company that specialised in audio dramatizations where one of their titles was Passport to Oblivion. The write up was suitable far-fetched and fun but it was the authors bio that caught my eye as it sang his praises - of which none I have ever heard of (not really surprising).

So it set me on the path to exploration - and as a result I stumbled on this title which is a series of short stories set around the world and presented as days of the week.

Yes they are dated in both views and world politics but (and I have to say limited to this book) feel that it does not fit the usual post war spy story as the lead character is a not a narcissist who leaves a trail of devastation almost as large as the one he is supposed to be stopping. Rather you have a country doctor who has a keen observational eye and a rather over reaching sense of doing what is right.

Of course the world is never this simple but there is a charm and appeal to the stories which I think sometimes is missing from more modern stories.

Week of Love by James Leasor is a collection of 7 short stories (one for each day of the week) featuring Leasor's country doctor / sometimes spy for British intelligence, Dr. Jason Love. In these stories, he visits various European countries, e.g. Portugal, Spain, Netherlands and also stays on the British Isles. During these visits, Love's powers of observation make him aware of situations that might require either his assistance or that of the Agency or just local police forces to resolve.

Leasor is able to present the locale, the situation observed by Love and his ability to quickly come up with a satisfactorily solution to resolve what he's perceived. In one at the request of a patient / friend, Love had his beloved automobile, an Auburn Cord flown to Italy and then made his way to the island of Giglio. It's off season but Love is enjoying himself but he's curious about a group of priests who are visiting. He also notices, one evening, 4 children's coffins being put together. Using a quite neat method of getting in contact with his boss in London, he discovers that an Italian plane had crashed into the waters nearby. (What was the cargo?) This is where Love's powers of deduction and quick action come in, resulting in a very satisfying conclusion.

In the other stories, he finds himself involved with jewel smugglers, stolen artworks, drug smuggling, Communist spies, etc. Each story is interesting, quickly put together and resolved and Love is also quite an interesting individual, not quite a James Bond, but still someone who draws you in and who you enjoy tagging along with. Most entertaining. (3.5 stars)

Very good set of short stories following the series characters Dr Jason Love.
I read a couple of the novels a long time ago and remember enjoying them. This collection passed me bye somehow so when saw it on kindle impulse bought it.

JL I think is a very good writer and these stories all work very well for me. A couple I wish were longer but that’s always the case with collections such as this.
I will have to look into getting copies of the novels again now to add to my overflowing tbr.

Overall definite recommendation
