‘Without doubt, those who have been invited to contribute are eminently qualified in several they have made a name for themselves in their chosen profession; by and large, they have made a positive contribution not only to their profession but also to the larger public cause; and, whilst one may or may not agree with the political views they espouse or the trajectory that they may have embarked upon, they do stand out.’
Many of India’s most consequential nation-builders and opinion-makers have emerged from the hallowed grounds of India’s most sought-after educational institution—the University of Delhi or DU, as it is popularly known. Institutions have waxed and waned over the years, but DU has always succeeded in reinventing itself to meet the demands of every decade. It is, therefore, not surprising that its alumni include highly respected government leaders, artists, entrepreneurs and littérateurs, who have been central to India’s remarkable journey.
Delhi Celebrating 100 Glorious Years is an eclectic collection of personal narratives and reflections of some of the University’s most distinguished alumni and faculty—Amitabh Bachchan, Kiren Rijiju, Dinesh Singh, Meenakshi Gopinath, Shashi Tharoor, Bibek Debroy, Imtiaz Ali, Raian Karanjawala, Sanjeev Sanyal, Arnab Goswami, Dhananjaya Y. Chandrachud, Lakshmi Puri, Namita Gokhale and Vijay Shekhar Sharma. Together, with editor Hardeep S. Puri, they celebrate the inimitable essence of DU—from its rich history, ethos and vibrant student life to its remarkable contribution to society and culture, both in India and across the globe.

Many of India's most consequential nation-builders and opinion-makers have emerged from the hallowed grounds of India's most sought-after educational institution - the University of Delhi or DU as it is popularly known. Institutions have waxed and waned over the years, but DU has always succeeded in reinventing itself to meet the demands of every decade. It is therefore not surprising that its alumni include highest respected government leaders, artists, entrepreneurs and litterateurs who have been central to India's remarkable journey.

The book is an eclectic collection of personal narratives and reflections of some of the university's most distinguished alumni and faculty - Shashi Tharoor, Arnab Goswami, DY Chandrachud, Imtiaz Ali, Kiren Rijiju, Sanjeev Sanyal et al. They celebrate the inimitable essence of DU - from its rich history, ethos and vibrant student life to its remarkable contribution to society and culture, both in India and across the globe.

Prospective students who have seen the university from afar will get an inside view of one of the most prestigious public universities in the country while those intimately familiar with the institution will rediscover it through the eyes of its most famous alumni.

Published in 2022, the year in which the university celebrated the 100th anniversary of its foundation, this book is a treasured resource and a fascinating read.

The book captures the history of Delhi University and tales that most alumni of the University would not know. For a University that boasts of such glorius alumni, there hasn't been much history passed on between generations and Hardeep S. Puri's book is an earnest attempt to bring out those legacies. However as a collection of personal narratives from a group of individuals, there seems to be a homogenous way of writing and the book misses out on generational and experiential diversity making it a slow read after a few chapters.

I learnt a few things about DU.
I wanted to check if there was anyone from Shaheed Bhagat Singh college who was part of this anthology. No one from my alma mater.
That said the essays of Shashi Tharoor stands out with a brilliant poetic quote from Gopalkrishna Gandhi on tehzeeb.
In the last essay by HS puri, there’s great quip I’ll carry. A retort to ‘I am what I am because of my college’ says ‘why blame the college’.
The rest was okayish.
