May topak gumawa nito—which makes it awesome. Unfortunately, less than half the book is funny. Rest aren't so. But I'm looking forward to the author's other books if he has any.
I admire Apol Sta. Maria's guts. I do not know him personally so I don't write this review to flatter him and make him my friend. I just would like to let him know that I admire his "difference."
He obviously is not gifted in making comic books. He is not a good illustrator even compared to Danielle Rina in Dirty Laundry and Other Stories 3 (3 stars). Apol Sta. Maria is like Anne Curtis belting a song in Showtime. We all know that she does not sing well, but we tolerate her singing for whatever strange reason.
That strange reason is, I think, Apol Sta. Maria's imagination. Who would have imagine to paint kanin baboy as rice (kanin) and on each grain you have the face off a pig. Come on, picture it. It's hilarious, right?
There are many good funny stories here. "Ang Alamat ng Panget" (The Legend of the Ugly), for example, is about a wicked king who asked everyone in his kingdom to be operated on so they (yes, human beings during that time did not have these) would have eyelashes. Since medical procedure during that time was crude and antibiotics were not invented yet, people died. So, the old wizard turned the wicked king into an ugly man and called him "Panget." Haha.
My favorite is the third story called "Huwag Makipaglaro sa Baka." It reminded me of a recent read, Karen Joy Fowler's We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves (4 stars). They both have the same message: that pets are important to children as taking care of them forms an important part of their childhood.
