An American Classic in Paperback for the First Time!
Zane Grey first presented this brilliant novel of the West in a much shorter form as a magazine serial in 1914. Readers were thrilled and greeted it as another masterpiece from one of the West's greatest storytellers. The manuscript would suffer at the hands of Grey's book publishers, however. They took the second half of the novel, deleted characters, changed the hero's name, and pasted it with the first half of another Grey manuscript to produce the awkward hybrid published as The Lone Star Ranger. Now, decades after its creation, the complete novel finally appears in paperback as the author wrote it, restored to its original glory.

Deputy Marshal Russ Sittell is on special assignment from the Texas Rangers to work with Vaughan Steel in putting a stop to the rampant rustling in Pecos County. But everyone knows that local rancher - and mayor - Granger Longstreth doesn't want any Ranger interference in his town. When Russ takes a job on Longstreth's ranch, he's able to learn exactly how the rancher operates - and he witnesses the growing tension between Longstreth and Steele. A tension that can only lead to trouble.

A fun book about a Texas Ranger and a U.S. Marshall teaming together in the 1870s to clean up Pecos County in West Texas. Naturally it is also a romance and the two fall for two cousins who live with the father/uncle who is a crime kingpin. The Texas Ranger uses his gun sparingly and the US Marshall is undercover. The action is nonstop and can just two lawmen break the rustlers? While not a mystery, it is interesting how the two work to their ultimate end.

So I'm not finishing this book. Not because it's absolutely horrible or anything, but because I have a policy when it comes to books that says by halfway through, if I still am not interested or enjoying it, I stop reading and sadly this book didn't live up to those minimal acceptable standards. The main character Russ constantly talks about how smart and fast and talented and badass he is, yet there is hardly any actual proof of this, and hardly even any action in the book at all. However, the lack of excitement is made up for in an abundance of dorky over-the-top cowboy jargon. The plot, characters, and romance are all predicable and uninspiring and so many things that Russ said had me rolling my eyes until I decided to call it quits. However I hold out hope that the next Western novel I read will be better.

A fantastic story about Texas rangers cleaning up a small Texas town that's been overrun by crime. Unfortunately its completely weighed down by one of the absolute dumbest romances I've ever read. Wish zane grey focused on the action and left the romance to a better writer.

A double barrel romance and western.
Another great Zane Grey story . This is the second time I've read this and I enjoyed as much this time as the first. An entertaining read.

A little slow moving and the action is told afterwards in retrospect. Not bad overall.

Ah, this was cute! My father describes Grey's language as "stilted", which I think is accurate - stilted like a good Hardy Boys book - and even the afterword discusses how Grey's characters aren't realistic at all...But seriously, a fun read, full of west Texas adventure and frontier justice, with a few nice romances running through it.

Because this book was written in 1914 the language is somewhat dated, making it not as quick to read as I'd hoped. I would not usually choose to read a western but it was for genre study. Stereotypical characters but not over-the-top cliched. Predictable plot. Good guys vs. bad guys. Meh....

This was an alright book. Had a real old fashioned feel to it, not really my style. Didn't have much action either.
