Friendship with God: an uncommon dialogue

Rate this book
Neale Donald Walsch has changed the way millions of Americans think about God. His Conversations with God series, book 1, book 2, and book 3, have all been New York Times bestsellers--book 1 for over two years. The essence of Neale Donald Walsch's message lies at the heart of faith--the sacred place in every person, where he stands alone with his God. Walsch urges each of us to forge our own unique relationship with God, a God who is everywhere and speaks to us in all we do. It is up to us to stop and listen. It is up to us to respond . . . to begin the conversation. And a conversation is the first step, just as in any relationship, in establishing trust, in building friendship, in creating communion. In Friendship with God , Neale Donald Walsch shares the next part of his journey, and leads us to deepen and strengthen our own bonds with God. He honors our heart's desire: a closer connection, richer and fuller. A friendship with God.

Neale Donald Walsch is a modern day spiritual messenger whose words continue to touch the world in profound ways. With an early interest in religion and a deeply felt connection to spirituality, Neale spent the majority of his life thriving professionally, yet searching for spiritual meaning before beginning his now famous conversation with God. His With God series of books has been translated into 34 languages, touching millions of lives and inspiring important changes in their day-to-day lives.

In addition to authoring the renowned With God series, Neale has published 16 other works, as well as a number of video and audio programs. Available throughout the world, each of the CwG dialogue books has made the New York Times Bestseller list, Conversations with God-Book 1 occupying that list for over two and half years.

The With God Series has redefined God and shifted spiritual paradigms around the globe. In order to deal with the enormous response to his writings, Neale created the Conversations with God Foundation, a non-profit educational organization dedicated to inspiring the world to help itself move from violence to peace, from confusion to clarity, and from anger to love.

Neale's work has taken him from the steps of Macchu Picchu in Peru to the steps of the Shinto shrines of Japan, from Red Square in Moscow to St. Peters Square in Vatican City to Tiananmen Square in China. And everywhere he has gone-from South Africa to Norway, Croatia to The Netherlands, the streets of Zurich to the streets of Seoul, Neale has found a hunger among the people to find a new way to live, at last, in peace and harmony, and he has sought to bring people a new understanding of life and of God which would allow them to experience that."

This book would I think be shunned by a great many professing Christians for the simple reason that it presents a God that is completely non-judgmental and completely open to all without any preconditions. There is none of the 'my faith is better than your faith' or 'only people who believe like me go to heaven...' in this book. It is real, it is open, it is honest - and it painted a picture of God that is probably the closest that I've ever seen to what I actually believe.

I enjoyed reading this one more than the Conversations series. I thought it was very honest and forthcoming. The main message is that of a New Gospel - we are all one. Ours is not a better way, ours is merely another way.

Throughout the entire series, God uses very clever play on words. My favorite in this book was that we are Gods in formation, God's information. We are God, in life expresses.

He says that only when there is a change in the human heart will there be a change in the human condition. And repeatedly asks us, If not you, who? If not now, when? To help bring about a change in the human consciousness to bring about peace on the planet. Wisdom is knowledge applied, he says, so we are asked to take this knowledge and apply it in how we live.

There is nothing for us to do, only to be. So be the change you want to see in the world.

A couple excerpts that I like:

pg 80
NDW: Whoa. Ask a question, get an answer.
God: Especially when you're asking God.
NDW: Yes, I see. I mean, it's not as if You have to stop and think about these things.
God: No, the answer is right there, on the tip of My tongue. It's right on the tip of your tongue, too, I might add.
NDW: What does that mean?
God: I mean I'm not keeping these answers to Myself. I never have been. All the answers to all of life's questions are, quite literally, on the tip of your tongue. That's another way of saying, "As you speak it, so will it be."
NDW: Well, according to that, if I say that everything You say is hogwash, then all that You've just told me is not true.
God: That's true.
NDW: No, it's not true.
God: I mean, it's true that it's not true.
NDW: But if I say that everything You say is not true, then it's not true that it's not true.
God: That's true.
NDW: Unless it's not.
God: Unless it's not. You see, you are creating your own reality.
NDW: That's what You say.
God: That's right.
NDW: But if I don't believe what You say . . .
God: . . . . then you will not experience it as your reality. But catch the closed circle here -- because if you do not believe that you create your own reality, then you will experience your reality as something you did not create . . . proving that you create your own reality.

pg 368
NDW: I don't get it. You've lost me.
God: Who You Are is life. You are life itself! And what is life? It is a process. And what is that process? It is evolution . . . or what you would call change. Everything in life changes! Everything! Life is change. That is what Life is. When you put an end to change, you put an end to life. Yet that you cannot do. And so you create a living hell, trying to do something you cannot do, efforting and straining to remain unchanged, when Who You Are is change itself. You are that which changes.
NDW: But some things change for the better, and some things change for the worse! All I am doing is trying to stop the changes for the worse.
God: There is no such thing as "better" or "worse." You just made all that up. You decide what to call better and what to call worse.
NDW: Okay, but what if I call it better to stay alive in my present physical form than to die? I call that a change for the worse! Surely You are not saying that if I do have cancer in my body I should do nothing, because life is eternal, and if my life in this body ends because of my inaction, so what? Surely You're not saying that -- are You?
God: I am saying that every act is an act of Self-definition. That is all you are doing here. You are defining and creating, expressing and experiencing, who you think you are. In short, you are evolving. How you evolve is your choice. That you evolve is not.
If you are a being who chooses to cut out a cancer within you in order to preserve your larger life form, then you will demonstrate that.
If you are a being who sees others of your species as a cancer because they are different from you, or disagree with you, you will demonstrate that. Indeed, many of you already have demonstrated that.
I am going to now invite you to see life in an entirely new way. I am going to invite you to view life as nothing more than a continuing process of change. Think of it this way: everything is changing, all of the time. That includes you. You are both the changer and the changed. That is because, even as you are changing, you are causing the change in your Self and in the world around you. When you arise in the morning, I invite you to think of one thing. What is going to change today? Not, will there be a change today? That is a given! But what is that change going to be? And what part will you play in creating that change, in being the conscious cause of it? Every second of every minute of every hour of every day you are making decisions. These choices are about what will change, and how. They are about nothing else.
Even a choice as simple as combing your hair. Let's use that, because it's an easy one. You imagine that you are combing your hair the same way every day. and so you are changing nothing at all. Yet the very act of combing it is an act of change. You go to the mirror and look at your hair just after you wake up, and you say, "Ugh." It's a mess. You can't go out like that. You've got to change it. You've got to change the way you look. So you wash your face, comb your hair, get ready for the day.
All the while, you are making decisions. Now some of these are decisions to change things back, the way they were. And so you create the illusion of keeping things the way they are. Yet you are simply re-creating yourself anew, in the grandest version of the greatest vision ever you held about Who You Are! All of life is a process of re-creation! This is God's greatest joy. This is God's recreation!
Now the implications this has on your life are phenomenal. When you think about it, this is an extraordinary revelation. You are doing nothing but changing. you are doing nothing but evolving. How you are changing is up to you. What you are evolving into is up to you. Yet the fact that you are is not something that is open to question. It is a given. That is just what is going on. That is what Life is. It is what God is. It is what you are. Life, God, You = That Which Changes.
NDW: But You still haven't resolved the dilemma. If I am One with everything, what about swatting the mosquito?
God: What kind of change do you choose to create in that part of your Self that you call the mosquito? That is the question you are asking, and that is the implication of the We Are All One wisdom. You are "changing" the part of The All that you call the mosquito. You cannot "kill" the mosquito, do you see? Life is eternal, you cannot end it. You do have the power to change your form. As in your popular science fiction entertainments, you might call yourself a shape shifter. Yet know this: all of consciousness acts together. In the highest sense, it is impossible for one of you to have dominion or control over another. Every aspect of divinity has cocreative control over its destiny. Therefore, you cannot kill a mosquito against its will. At some level, the mosquito has chosen that. All of the change in the universe occurs with the consent of the universe itself, in its various forms. The universe cannot disagree with itself. That is impossible.
NDW: This is dangerous talk. This is a dangerous teaching. People could use this to say, "Well, then I can do anything to anyone I want, since they've given me their permission! After all they're 'co-creating' it with me!" It would be behavioral anarchy.
God: You already have that. Life is what you call "behavioral anarchy," do you not see? You are all doing what you want, when you want, how you want, and I am not stopping you. Are you not seeing that? The human race has done what it has called hideous things, and it has done them over and over again, and God is not stopping it from doing so. Have you not ever wondered why?
NDW: Of course I have. We all have. We have cried out in our hearts, "God, why are you allowing this?" Of course we have asked.
God: Well, do you not want the answer?
NDW: Of course I want the answer.
God: Good, because I have just given it to you.

Another great read from Neale Donald Walsch, if you enjoyed Conversations with God you will enjoy this one as well. I liked how he addressed his personal life and history a bit more in this book than he did the others, and how he struggled with going from being a regular guy to a well known spiritual author.

This book helped me realize that God really does love me and helped me strengthen my relationship with God. You have to have an open mind to read all of Walsch's Conversation with God books. They are certainly not for everyone.

Not much of a read. I believe this book reflects the misogynistic shadows of our culture. It puts men on a throne, sometime that is a must to tolerate while instructing women on how to accept them. Meanwhile, women are ridiculed and not taken seriously. Nah. If you're an independent woman and your husband can't communicate, reading this book will take you one step closer to divorce.

This author should throw in the towel. I never read another one of his books.

Try "Are You the One for Me" by Barbara Deangelos. Far superior and it doesn't put the man on his rights to shut women out. It treats both male and female as equal.

My favourite book, my bedside table one. As a spiritual person, I found it the perfect mix of romance, religion and quantum physics. The dialogues have forever and profoundly changed my life as I have found in this book the perfect translation of my feelings and faith into words.

I enjoyed the raw honesty of the author's perspective in this book. I can relate in the sense that I have had tough, doubtful questions to God about who He is and what He is doing in my life and in the world around me. However, what I cannot relate to in this book is God's responses. Personally, this is where the honesty for me fell short. I did not feel like it was so much what God was actually saying to the author, but instead, it was the author speaking back to himself to condone his actions and beliefs.

There is some good stuff in this book. I believe that identifying God as a loving God (rather than a wrathful God seeking to punish) is crucial in determining how intimate and honest your relationship with God will be. However, I would caution someone who is reading this in order to seek answers about God. I interpreted this book more as the author finding a creative way to give his own ideas and perceptions of God by labeling God as the one behind the ideas.

This book is about friendship with GOD and who we are which is limitless, timeless, with infinite possibilities and constantly changing.

Can we love GOD unconditionally ?
Can we love life unconditionally?
Can we love our loved one unconditionally?
Can we love ourself unconditionally?
Can we love our enemy unconditionally?
Can we love our greatest fear unconditionally?
Can we love nothing Itself unconditionally?
Can we love everything unconditionally?
And can we go beyond love? Or love is all there is?

Each of our action defines who we are and how we choose life to be for us. We all have free choice to do and be anything we want. And that's makes us who we are.

What's the place look like beyond things? Is it nothing? And what is beyond nothing? Is it everything? Is it things+nothing= everything and everything = love. Is the experience of oneness with everything ultimate expression of love?

By the way, enjoying this CWG series a lot.

Like many books, this one found me when I needed it most; the dark night of the soul period of my life when I was hunting for answers and a way of dealing with unhappiness. Neale's writing and perspective are hopeful, intuitive, and loving, the perfect combination for people in pain who seek help. My gratitude to Neale Donald Walsch for sharing his visions and peaceful, inspiring words. I wish him well and will continue to read his other works (I have a few others that I skim through from time to time when I could use some 'advice from the universe'.)

The best part of the book was the explanation of the 4 levels of consciousness. It was brilliant! Overall a good book, however, there's not much new for people who have already read the CWG series, and my beloved Master Neale talks a lot about his personal life, which i thought was a bit too much. Thank you again for giving us this beautiful gift of wisdom!
