Information on how you can create an effective, compelling online presence; advice from successful professionals on how social networking can propel your career; the ins and outs of social networking sites (LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, Quora, and many more), from the basics to the advanced features; tips for creating and maintaining a blog that will establish you as an expert in your field; and much more.
I recently skimmed this book at the USF Central Library and gained insights into the significance of online networking using popular platforms. The book emphasized the need for enhancing LinkedIn profiles, highlighting that it is crucial for career growth. It also covered various networking platforms used until 2013. The key takeaway was the importance of starting online networking somewhere, as it is better than not doing anything to improve career prospects and seize opportunities.

Miriam Salpeter has written a wonderfully clear, concise tome on getting ahead in the job search market using the Internet and social networking. I've known her as an online career coach for some time now, and I'm thrilled to see that she's put down her no-nonsense, easy-to-grasp philosophy into a simple paperback guide.
Unlike other coaches who write books, Salpeter's tone in instructive and friendly and never patronizing. It covers the basic tools of social networking, Twitter and Facebook, and explains how each one works, and how to leverage each for maximum results. Many social media guides are out there telling you to "just jump in and try it" but Salpeter's expertise lets you understand the functioning principles behind the tools and use each one to further your purpose, along with highlighting the pros and cons of each one.
The books expands on lesser known social networks that help you provide more content online to boost your visibility. Each section is clearly laid out and you can navigate the chapters easily, building on the lessons already covered.
If you are job searching, you need to be online. And if you're going to get online for your job search, you need to read this book.
Let's face it, the first thing a company will do is Google you. They'll check your social presence, troll your Facebook page, then possibly request you as a friend. Either way, having an online presence can be a rewarding experience or a fail for some people. Many people have missed a job opportunity because their Facebook page had inappropriate posts or maybe, you didn't complete your profile on LinkedIn. Depending on the job, some companies want to see you adapting to the online age with a professional presence online. In the end, it's all about networking to get a job. And who's not online, on some site these days? And, that's where the fail occurs. Although, you might not like Facebook, MySpace or Twitter, these places are booming with job opportunities. Better be prepared than not. This book was great. Tons of great advice for the beginner to the advanced in social networking through social media.
I may never have my own blog or start a Twitter feed, but thanks to this book, I can at least be conversant on the topic of social media. The wealth of information provided by the author is often overwhelming. I recommend choosing one form of social media (Twitter, blogging, LinkedIn)that you hope to use more effectively and following Saltpeter's advice about how to optimize your use rather than trying to take in all of the information in one giant chunk. This book is meant to be used as an instruction manual next to your laptop, iPad, or SmartPhone.
This book is a great resource for anyone interested in expanding their online presence. I utilized Salpeter's expertise on making connections through LinkedIn and Twitter, as well as her advice to job-seekers and was able to land my dream job! I appreciated the extensive information on creating and marketing your profile through blogging. There is also a very helpful list of annotated social media networking sites in the back of the book.
The Ivy Leagues are a superficial vanity device designed to boost confidence in many of us; but distinguishing yourself through real, tangible accomplishment is a validated, objective measure of your skills and experience. And of course social networking allow an individual to separate from the organization and pursue their very own goals.
