I was just a schoolboy when Mary Millington was in her prime but she was so famous even I heard of her. I even tried to sneak into 'Playbirds' at the local cinema and was caught. Can't blame me for trying. I finally got around to seeing her movies when they were released on DVD here in the U.S. and I must say - They are not good movies. But Mary always shines through and the scenes she is in always come through. They may be cheap, exploitation movies, but her charisma, energy, and love of performing make them all worthwhile viewing. This book does capture some of that magnetism but it always tries to ground the energy she brought. This is a soft biography but it does expose warts. Mary might not have been a saint but she was the biggest star of British cinema in the late 70s an icon in the field. This book brings the icon to the forefront while not hiding her seedy roots. Full of pictures both graphic and personal this book does a comprehensive review of a woman who is still being talked about 40 years later.
