Rate this book
Glamour model, cover girl and hardcore porn actress - a forthright bisexual (Prime Minister Harold Wilson and Diana Dors were amongst her lovers) who promoted her ideas of sexual openness and equality - she is the single most famous sex star Britain ever produced. Her sex comedy Come Play With Me still holds the record for the longest-ever theatrical engagement in British cinema history. 20 years after her suicide at the age of 33, her films still enjoy massive cult status. Through unprecedented access to the Millington archive, exclusive interviews with her friends, colleagues and family, and the largest collection of Millington movie memorabilia, modeling photographs and private family shots, this is the book on a remarkable life, film career and myth.

I was just a schoolboy when Mary Millington was in her prime but she was so famous even I heard of her. I even tried to sneak into 'Playbirds' at the local cinema and was caught. Can't blame me for trying. I finally got around to seeing her movies when they were released on DVD here in the U.S. and I must say - They are not good movies. But Mary always shines through and the scenes she is in always come through. They may be cheap, exploitation movies, but her charisma, energy, and love of performing make them all worthwhile viewing. This book does capture some of that magnetism but it always tries to ground the energy she brought. This is a soft biography but it does expose warts. Mary might not have been a saint but she was the biggest star of British cinema in the late 70s an icon in the field. This book brings the icon to the forefront while not hiding her seedy roots. Full of pictures both graphic and personal this book does a comprehensive review of a woman who is still being talked about 40 years later.

I really enjoyed this fast paced and highly entertaining read about an early sex superstar. Her life, her movies, her background and her philosophy together with good movie stills, movie posters and photos. Highly recommended!
