Mie keeps doing her thing. Komura keeps doing his. This arrangement appears to be working out for all concerned, but pesky things like hormones keep asking for that little bit more.

I think the hardest thing with this series is accepting the premise because, as I believe I noted before, it completely falls apart under the slightest bit of scrutiny. Like any. At all. Ever.

With the revelation that she is not deliberately forgetting her glasses, Mie comes off as so clueless that even she chastises herself for being dumb. However, unless her parents stuck her in the microwave as a baby there’s no reason to think she’s so simple as to not notice she has no glasses with her.

Anyway, you genuinely can’t be bothered by that or you’ll go insane, although there are finally some permutations on this, such as the field trip. Here we learn that she likes to buy useless bric-a-brac on trips, which includes a pair of cosmetic glasses she accidentally brings instead of her spare pair of real glasses, which she figures out after she breaks her usual pair on the way to the trip.

Genuinely, I suspect Rube Goldberg would be proud of that one.

Also, friends suddenly lurch into frame and not a one of these types of manga has ever been made worse by the addition of an actual cast. There’s a lot of smart (for a given value of smart relative to this series) use of these new people here, like Komura getting called out (and ratted out) during swim class.

These friends could use a little more fleshing out, I think two of them get named, but they all seem to have figured out what’s going on here and their gentle encouragement is a nice addition of harmless on top of the usual harmless.

Let me zero in on the opening story, when Mie accidentally calls Komura during a bathroom trip at a slumber party, to award it some serious praise. Again, Mie forgets to wear her glasses, but this time just to use the bathroom and she doesn’t want to disturb people more than she has to. Actually believable.

Additionally, this one is pushing the charm button super hard, as Mie gets flustered and Komura keeps her calm in the most ridiculous way possible. There are some really lovely panel compositions in this one that go a long way to making the core premise more fun than usual.

The other stories do the usual shenanigans, although Mie finally gets the hint that more than friendly interest might be going on here. However, this too leads to Komura saying he wishes she forgot her glasses every day.

Which, between that and the way her friends describe her, does make Mie come off as somebody helpless who needs assistance constantly and, rather than reminding her about her damn glasses every day, Komura likes having her reliant on him. Not sure how I feel about that one.

Again, I overthink these things, so if you can just accept Mie being clueless and helpless and Komura’s desires as just the innocent wishes of a young man in the throes of youthful romance, you’re fine. You’re not supposed to engage with this series beyond finding it cute or it really doesn’t work.

3 stars - I’m never going to call this story brilliant, but it is certainly doing just enough with its premise to keep me onboard and, admittedly, it has, more than once, been surprisingly good at what it’s trying to do. Turn your brain down and it goes a lot smoother.

They should do the middle school thing and have them check mark a box if they like them or not. ALSO how can she not recognize peoples voices. I hate how much of an airhead she’s being portrayed as

Mie's increasingly social (and increasingly comical) encounters with the world beyond her orbit of the treacherous stretch of land between her home and school are bearing fruit. Sort of. Although the girl routinely forgets her glasses on her way to class each morning, sometimes it's not the journey that gets her into trouble, it's the weather, her clumsiness, or pure misfortune that's to blame (e.g., grabbing "non-prescription fashion glasses" instead).

Whatever the case, Mie is still forgetting her glasses. And as a consequence, it's up to Komura to keep her company. As with previous volumes, THE GIRL I LIKE FORGOT HER GLASSES v4 offers the oddball teenagers as much wholesome support as possible, without being too glib about it. Classmates urge the two seatmates to collaborate on school projects, at one point going so far as to encourage them to partner during a field trip to the science museum.

The additional time together is golden, but the current volume houses a rather painful reality check. Mie, however seemingly clueless, isn't entirely unaware of Komura's devotion to her. She knows the guy is going out of his way to help her, but all things being honest, taking pleasure in another person's kindness feels permissively grotesque. As such, a tearful confession is sure to pull at readers' heartstrings (Mie: "Every time you try to cheer me up, I feel relieved, and I hate that about myself. I want to do better. I don't want to be a burden on you. But I still keep looking for your help [...] Sorry. I'm such a hassle.").

Mie's grasp of Komura's accommodating behavior gradually shifts from perceiving his efforts as a cordial convenience toward that of an earnest affectation. When she gossips with her friends, and learns that one of her buddies may have a crush on another boy in class, Mie can't help but compartmentalize and rationalize the evidence at play: the gaze, the expression, the attention. What are these variables, and why do they matter? What does it mean to be someone's "special" person? Does Komura believe she is his "special" person? Perhaps that wouldn't be so bad. Glasses or no glasses.

Title: The Girl I Like Forgot Her Glasses
Author: Koume Fujichika
Volume 4 out of 12
Genre: romantic comedy, slice of life, rom com, shonen
Pages:128

During the trip, Mie took special care to pack an extra pair of glasses, just in case. And sure enough, that "just in case" moment arrived when she tripped and shattered her glasses. However, the spare pair she had packed turned out to be a novelty fashion one, not her prescription pair. Luckily, Komura came to her aid and she apologized for inconveniencing him. But Komura reassured her that helping her out made him happy, so it was no trouble at all. Despite his kind words, Mie couldn't help but feel like she was becoming a burden.
As the trip went on, Asuka received a call from Yasaka, leading to speculation about her possible crush on him. Mie couldn't help but notice the peculiar look on Asuka's face when she saw Yasaka's name on her caller ID. It wasn't a direct confession, but when Komura expressed how happy it made him to help Mie, it triggered a response in her and made her reflect on her feelings.
Mie's thoughts sent her through a rollercoaster of emotions, completely changing the course of the story. I can't wait to see what happens in book 5! The anticipation in my voice is palpable.

More progression to the main story! And we even got a story where Mie had her glasses on the whole time and they were just playing a game together.

The only reason I knocked it down a little is because I’m not a fan of miscommunications so I didn’t like the end of the museum trip with them misinterpreting each other and Mie thinking she needs to rely on Komura less. (Even if that gets resolved by the end of the volume and she starts to finally realize he has a crush on her.)

They’re just teens, though, navigating their weird hormones and feelings so it would make sense that there’d be some confusion so it’s still sweet and believable.

Looking forward to seeing what happens when they start to realize they actually like each other! They (and their friends) are so cute!

I really liked this volume for the fact that we see two people in a relationship (any kind of relationship wether platonic or romantic) where one has a disability and the other tries to support them. It addresses the feelings that often occur like worrying that they are a burden while the other person just wants to help them because they care about them which can cause a type of pain on both ends. It came off as a sweet, tender moment when I was reading it, because some of those emotions really hit home for me. 🥹

I am still enjoying this series but some of the novelty is wearing off. There are some incredibly cute moments, especially the beginning and end chapters but the middle is much of the same without anything new being introduced. I am hopeful that with the ending revealing Komura and Mie's true feelings will get things going in a more interesting direction. This is still a very cute story with likeable characters.

Okay, this one was A LOT better. Less fan-service and more back to the story of the two kids liking each other. I was getting a little tired of the "she forgot her glasses again" bit, but it does get addressed. Even Mie says she hates forgetting them and actually makes attempts to remember, so she's not truly dumb. LOL.

I'll continue one.

Cute romance moments, but again same trope situation. I have a feeling might be burned out by the end of this manga series if nothing super changes.

The adventures of the near-sighted space invader continues. This one lost a point because it looks like there's going to be some romantic developments coming soon.

another simple volume, I think Mie has finally realized how Komura truly feels about her. really hope they confess to their feelings soon. the series in general is starting to feel a bit repetitive but they're such simple reads I still plan to continue reading them.

This volume is up to Chapter 55 I think. I've read up on that. this series is not that interesting. Some chapters are fun but mostly it's kinda boring.
