The Twenty: One Woman's Trek Across Corsica on the GR20 Trail

Rate this book
Marianne Bohr and her husband, about to turn sixty, are restless for adventure. They decide on an extended, desolate trek across the French island of Corsica—the GR20, Europe’s toughest long-distance footpath—to challenge what it means to grow old. Part travelogue, part buddy story, part memoir, The Twenty is a journey across a rugged island of stunning beauty little known outside Europe.

From a chubby, non-athletic child, Bohr grew into a fit, athletic person with an “I’ll show them” attitude. But hiking The Twenty forces her to transform a lifetime of hard-won achievements into acceptance of her body and its limitations. The difficult journey across a remote island provides the crucible for exploring what it means to be an aging woman in a youth-focused culture, a physically fit person whose limitations are getting the best of her, and the partner of a husband who is growing old with her. More than a hiking tale, The Twenty is a moving story infused with humor about hiking, aging, accepting life’s finite journey, and the intimacy of a long-term marriage—set against the breathtaking beauty of Corsica’s rugged countryside.

Marianne C. Bohr has been married for over 30 years to her high school sweetheart and travel partner, has a grown son and daughter and is the eldest of 11 children. She started her career working for the French National Railroad (the SNCF) in New York, selling Eurail passes and mapping itineraries for American travelers to Europe. She has her MBA; was Senior Vice President of a book publishing and distribution company; served on association boards; traveled across the US many times a month on business; attended international book fairs and taught national workshops every year; handled multi-million dollar budgets; ran sales conferences; and, managed a large staff.

However, at age 55, all she really wanted was to drop out of the corporate rat race to take a gap year abroad and return to the US to teach French. The pressures of the book business had taken their toll on her energy, spirit and creativity and she’d known for several years it was time to move on to some unscripted travel and unadulterated adventure.

And so leave the business world she did.

Marianne and her husband took a yearlong sabbatical to travel across Europe and Gap Year Girl: A Baby Boomer Adventure Across 21 Countries, is the book she wrote over the course of their journey. She is now a teacher of middle school French and a freelance writer and editor whose article on her gap year, The Year of Living Spontaneously, ran in Bethesda Magazine. She’s written extensively on the book business and has been an editor for a broad spectrum of writers, from architects to designers, children’s writers to medical researchers, novelists to memoirists, and of course, travel writers.

Marianne C. Bohr's inspirational journey, "The Twenty," captures the essence of pushing oneself to the limit in the face of advancing age and difficult circumstances. Bohr's open account of her journey down the GR20 in Corsica struck a powerful chord with me. Her transition from an unathletic young girl to a daring traveller shows the strength of will. The book is relatable in its examination of accepting one's body and aging's limitations.

The title "The Twenty" references to the gruelling twenty stages of the GR20 while also representing the couple's age and desire to remake themselves. This memoir/travelogue has a lovely packaging. The beautiful beauty of Corsica's scenery and the difficulties that lie ahead are reflected in the cover, which depicts a rough landscape.

The writing is interesting and combines personal views with travelogues. Although a few passages felt a little slow, ultimately, Bohr maintained a gripping story. Her marriage to her husband is endearing and believable. Marianne is my favourite character because of her honesty and tenacity.

The novel met my expectations for an adventure, self-discovery, and ageing story. However, there were occasions when I wanted for deeper reflection. With its touching examination of the human soul amid a magnificent landscape, the book far surpassed my expectations.

Across Corsica with a backpack! I'll be honest: I had not heard of the GR20 before picking up this book—I had barely heard of Corsica. But I love a hiking memoir, and I've been meaning to read Bohr's first book for ages, so...off to Corsica.

The Twenty takes Bohr and her husband from their home in the US, on the verge of retirement, across the ocean to the rocky, sunny, sometimes tempestuous landscapes of the GR20. Billed as one of Europe's toughest hiking trails, it's not for the faint of heart. Chains and scrambles and scree; scraped skin and bruises—it sounds like some of the difficulty comes down to your age and starting shape, although deaths are not unheard of, as a number of places present risks for nasty falls, and the weather can be fickle. Bohr and her husband went with a guided group, tucking recent health concerns in their back pockets and hoping that their previous hiking experience and determination would do the job.

Bohr weaves in snippets from her childhood—the oldest of eleven in a determinedly Catholic household, she describes being expected to be a smiling second mother of sorts...with high academic (and domestic) expectations but low athletic expectations. It sounds like those expectations dogged her somewhat for much of the trail: how long does it take to unlearn the lesson that you're one thing and cannot be another?

I'm reminded a little bit, in Bohr's descriptions of her group and the way she and her husband interacted with them, of Gail Storey's I Promise Not to Suffer. I've never really considered doing a group hiking trip (I did end up with something of a group on the Camino, but it was informal, and I started and ended alone), but altogether this sounds like a wonderful—if exhausting—experience. The GR20 probably isn't going to be high on my priority list (I'm more into woods than rocks), but oh my this does make my feet itchy.

The Twenty is an inspiring page turner about the author’s journey into hiking and aging.

Newly retired, the author and her husband embark upon the gruelling 13 day hike across Corsica alongside a group of hikers of varying ages and experience levels.

The author faces the elements, battles intrusive thoughts and faces physical, emotional and mental challenges that no amount of training could have prepared her for.

Beautifully written for the aged adventurer, or anyone filled with wanderlust. The writer does a beautiful job of describing the terrain, landscapes and views as she pushes her body and mind to the max.

This novel was a beautiful journey of the island of Corsica, self discovery, self forgiveness, aging, camaraderie, love and friendship.

Thank you to Book Sparks and the author for the arc to review.

Marianne Bohr and her husband are in their late fifties and love travel and adventure. For their 60th birthdays, they embark on a 13 day journey that will take them to the mountains of Corsica, a French island in the Mediterranean Sea.

This book wove together two of my favorite passions; travel and nature. I loved the goals and aspirations of Marianne, who embraces her aging body even though it’s causing some hiccups in her training and eventual trek. This book has given me a brightened perspective on getting older and a renewed appreciation for experiencing new challenges. Since reading this book, I’ve added Corsica to my desired travel destinations and I’m now in the market for new hiking boots!

A truly inspiring book recounting the physical and emotional challenges presented to the newly retired author as she undertook a gruelling hike across Corsica with her husband and fellow trekkers.
If there is one quote in 'The Twenty' that epitomises the author's approach to life it is this one: 'Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming 'Wow! What a Ride!' (Hunter Thompson).
The book is beautifully written allowing the reader to vicariously travel across stunning yet extremely challenging landscapes which tested both physical and mental strength to the extreme. Bohr skillfully portrays how the greatest challenges can give rise to the deepest learning experiences and I loved how she finally found the self-compassion to balance the need to respect the body's ageing process whilst continuing to explore its limitations.
A story of battered and ageing yet strong and resilient bodies, healing of souls, the kindness and wisdom of strangers, group dynamics and the beauty of planet Earth.
A fascinating, reflective read not just for anyone interested in adventure travels but for those wanting inspiration to explore the boundaries they may impose on their own lives.
I am grateful to NetGalley , the publishers and the author for an advanced reader copy of this book and will be recommending it to others on publication.

While some readers may desire a stronger character arc that focuses on the development of the author’s pride in her unique abilities, “The Twenty” remains a moving and poignant story. Through humor and introspection, it encourages readers to contemplate the finite nature of life’s journey, cherish the intimacy of long-term partnerships, and appreciate the intrinsic value of self-acceptance.

Marianne Bohr’s “The Twenty” is an inspiring memoir that seamlessly blends adventure, introspection, and a quest for self-acceptance. With its evocative descriptions, relatable insights, and heartfelt narrative, this book offers a profound reading experience. It is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit, reminding us to embrace our own unique paths while savoring the beauty of the world around us.

In “The Twenty,” Marianne Bohr takes readers on an extraordinary adventure across the rugged and breathtakingly beautiful island of Corsica. As she and her husband approach their sixtieth birthday, they embark on an audacious trek along the GR20, Europe’s most formidable long-distance footpath. Blending travelogue, buddy story, and memoir, this book offers a unique exploration of aging, acceptance, and the profound bond of a lifelong partnership.

Bohr’s candid and compelling storytelling style captivates readers, as she delves into the complexities of being an aging woman in a culture that idolizes youth. From her transformation as a non-athletic child to a fit and athletic individual, the author grapples with her own limitations and the societal pressures that come with growing older. Her introspection and self-awareness infuse the narrative with depth, inviting readers to reflect on their own journeys and the challenges of embracing one’s unique abilities.

One intriguing aspect of the book is how Bohr openly shares her family of origin’s negative characteristics and her lingering insecurities about not being an athlete, even at sixty. This vulnerability adds a layer of poignancy to her narrative, as readers witness a formidable athlete who, despite her accomplishments, struggles to recognize her own prowess. It serves as a tool that allows us to cheer her on, empathize with her journey, and ultimately celebrate her growth.

Amidst the captivating personal reflections, “The Twenty” also serves as a captivating travelogue, immersing readers in the untamed beauty of Corsica’s rugged countryside. Bohr’s vivid descriptions transport us to the island, making us feel as though we are traversing its challenging trails alongside her. The scenic landscapes come alive, painting a picture of Corsica’s lesser-known allure.

This is a beautifully written, engaging narrative about Marianne Bohr’s hike through Corsica’s GR20 trail with her husband Joe in guided group of interesting people. Both at age 60, Marianne and Joe ambitiously plot out their extreme 20-mile trek, and it seems a little crazy, as Marianne has recently been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. However, as you get to know Marianne, you realize that nothing much will stop her once she puts her mind to a goal.

Marianne intersperses her travel log with memories that come to mind as she faces certain challenges. She had a difficult, expectation-driven childhood as the oldest of eleven children in a strict Catholic family. Marianne’s insights along the way are relatable to any of us who try to stay fit and active as we age—accepting our limitations, asking for help, and despite all, acknowledging our own extraordinary accomplishments. Maybe confronting some of our long-held resentments and letting them go. And realizing that we don’t always have to be strong, or that strength can be portrayed in a variety of ways that have nothing to do with physical prowess.

I thought it was especially interesting that during her 3-day forced hiatus from the hike while recovering from a muscle strain, Marianne had a variety of conversations and experiences which left her with some fresh perspective that she would have missed out on completely, had she not gotten hurt. They almost seemed fateful—especially her dinner with Celine. And, she happened to be in the right place at the right time to rescue a toddler who had suddenly fallen into a deep mountain pool. A falcon—mythical bird of victory—swooshes closely overhead, seeming to send her a message: “Forgive your inner critic for being so tough. No one I hold dear cares how quickly I climb over a mountain..”

I enjoyed learning about the Corsican people, and a little of their history from the perspective of their French guide, Julien. What an intriguing place.

Marianne’s writing is gorgeous, and her depiction of the scenery superb. My only complaint was that there are no pictures to go along with this story. I would have loved that addition.

Book:📚The Twenty: One Woman’s Trek Across Corsica on the GR20 Trail
AUTHOR: Marianne C. Bohr

About Author: Marianne C. Bohr, freelance writer and travel blogger, married her high school sweetheart and travel partner. Four of her travel essays received Solas Awards by travel publisher, Travelers’ Tales, honoring excellence in travel writing.
Review:
The Twenty by Marianne C. Bohr is a motivational and adventure story about exploration, maturation, and self-discovery. Marianne Bohr and her husband decide to walk the difficult GR20 trail in Corsica as they near their sixties out of a desire for adventure. The book offers a rich reading experience by skillfully fusing travelogue, memoir, and buddy story themes.

In June 2023, Marianne is set to release her book, "The Twenty: The Highs and Lows of Hiking Across Corsica on Europe's Toughest Footpath." This exciting journey takes readers along the challenging GR20 trail in Corsica. Paddy Dillon, the author of Cicerone's "The GR20 Corsica: Complete Guide to the High-Level Route," acknowledges the demanding nature of this trail, emphasizing the need for strength, fitness, and agility. He also highlights that most trekkers on the GR20 are typically young adults in excellent physical condition.

However, Marianne's story serves as an inspiring reminder that age should not be a barrier to taking on this challenging adventure. Her determination on the trail sets an example of how careful planning and precise foot placement can make this challenging trek achievable for individuals of any age.

Marianne's adventurous spirit doesn't stop with the GR20. She, along with her husband and two grown children, embraces the opportunity to travel whenever it arises. Marianne resides in Park City, UT, where she has transitioned from a career in publishing to teaching middle school French. In her free time, she enjoys skiing, hiking, and pursuing her passion for writing, embodying a life filled with adventure and exploration

“Perhaps life’s most important lessons need to be learned and then relearned over and over again. Receiving help and letting people see you’re fragile is okay.”

Marianne Bohr and her husband are adventurers. And they’re aging. Creeping up on their 60th birthdays, they decide that an epic adventure awaits. Just prior to this adventure, though, Marianne discovers she is suffering from rheumatoid arthritis and it is causing her immense pain. But she is determined and she soldiers on.

Full disclosure..I am NOT a hiker. I love to look at nature but I do not camp or otherwise expose my body to the things found whilst camping. But I surely admire those that do! I could not have hiked the GR20 trail on my best day, and here she is doing it at almost 60 with an aging body and some new health issues. Much respect! Her account is detailed and harrowing and I can alllllmost see the the appeal. Almost. 😜

This book is a testament to mind over matter, the beauty and unforgiving ways of nature, love, and having a supportive partner. If you want something bad enough you’ll do whatever you can to make it happen, no matter what literal and figurative hill you have to climb! ⛰️

Thank you to @BookSparks and @mariannecbohr for the #gifted copy.

I love a good travel memoir and Marianne’s story of hiking the GR20 in Corsicana France with her husband and the small crew they went with was fantastic.

Marianne and her husband Joe are lifelong hikers and decide to hike the GR20 as a 60th birthday/35th wedding anniversary present to them both. She chronicles the journey from her perspective from the time the decide to go to the very end. Interspersed throughout are memories from her childhood that have shaped the woman she’s become.

Not only a story about the growth you experience traveling, it’s a story of dealing with a new chronic diagnosis (RA) and aging and the pain that comes with realizing while your brain and mind may feel young the body is a different story.

As an avid traveler (although not more than a day hiker/camper myself) I totally related to her mindset of always needing a next travel date on the books. Travel memoirs always make me want to go out and do the thing and while I would love to visit Corsica, I don’t think I’ll be tackling the GR20 myself anytime soon 😂 I totally applaud Marianne and her husband for making the trek at any age, let alone to kick off their retirement. Marianne is #lifegoals

I recently had the pleasure of reading The Twenty: One Woman's Trek Across Corsica on the GR20 Trail by Marianne C. Bohr.

To celebrate retirement and their upcoming sixtieth birthdays, Marianne Bohr takes us on a journey with her husband, across the French island of Corsica. They are joined by a knowledgeable, encouraging guide and a group of adventure enthusiasts, all there for their own reasons.

The trail setting was inspiring for me. I loved reading about the trials and victories along the way. I respect Marianne and her husband for taking on such an incredible challenge and sharing their story with readers. If you enjoy hiking or being out in nature, I think you will enjoy this book too. I found myself online researching must see trails in Canada, and it sent me down a bit of a rabbit hole.

Touching on themes of aging, grief, personal growth, connection, and self awareness, I will be thinking about this one for a while. The bond developed between all of the hikers, especially Marianne and Sarah, was heartwarming.

Thank you to publisher and author for sending a copy of this my way to review.

Readers are treated to an exquisite fusion of adventure and meditation in Marianne C. Bohr's "The Twenty." Marianne Bohr and her husband are approaching the age of sixty, and their desire for adventure brings them to Corsica's challenging GR20 track.

The book deftly blends memoir, travelogue, and buddy story themes to produce a multi-dimensional narrative. The development of Bohr personally from a non-athletic boy to a tough hiker gives the narrative depth. Her open observations on becoming older, accepting one's physique, and companionship ring true.

Their emotional journey is perfectly framed by the book's depiction of Corsica's beautiful scenery. The moniker, "The Twenty," cleverly captures the couple's joint endeavour by referencing both the trail's stages and their ages.

The rough charm of Corsica is well captured in the cover image. The writing style of Bohr is interesting, however several passages should be made more concise. In general, "The Twenty" presents a passionate examination of accepting difficulties and looking for development in later life.

Marianne and her husband approach turning sixty by taking a guided hike through the rugged middle of Corsica. The author chronicles their two-week adventure on a day-by-day basis, with all its ups and downs, whether literal, emotional, or physical, while bringing to life their companions along the way. Marianne's memories of a less than athletic childhood (as was true for so many of us girls of a certain age) reveal how far she's come—and how motivated she is to succeed in this challenge. I like to think it's never too late to have a happy childhood, and toward the end of their trek, one of the hikers named Kees tells Marianne, "Children always look for adventure. Why not big children, too?" And yet, amid the playfulness, such as watching a salamander, there were serious epiphanies. For instance, no matter how much we ache, "camaraderie can keep hurt at bay and stave off the sadness of an impending farewell." It seemed to me like a type of pilgrimage, with lessons along the way.

Thank you @booksparks @shewritespress for this wonderful #summerpopup memoir by Marianne Bohr.

I must admit that reading this book enlightens me in so many ways. After the Pandemic, I felt older and grumpier because I didn’t know how time had robbed my life and days mindlessly. However after reading this memoir, I feel that there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. I felt her messages, experiences and perseverance have gave a new meaning to aging. Her unyielding bravery by trekking Corsica’s GR20 Trail offered many different reasons why I should start changing my approach to living. The physical pain, agony and simply aging are some things we have to face with kindness to our own self and body. An inspiring memoir and for someone who is fast approaching “aging” this novel is definitely worth reading and understanding about the importance of our own worthiness.

Thank you to the publishers for the opportunity to check out an ARC of this book through Netgalley!

I am such a lover of a memoir especially when it is something that is so out of my wheelhouse! I am someone who has gone on a a couple of "hikes" in my life, but certainly nothing like the hike that Marianne and her husband went on. I enjoyed that this book brought a unique perspective as someone who is older, but still enjoying the things they love.

Overall, I felt like the book struggled to keep my attention and I kept putting it down and coming back to it. I think if I was the intended audience (someone who loves hiking) I think this would be the perfect book for them.

As a big fan of nature and hiking, I knew I would love this book. Traveling across Corsica, Bohr experienced a challenging hike and has detailed her journey in this amazing book! There were a lot of parts that discussed healing and the hardest parts of aging. This story is brought to life with the author’s writing and ability to describe the hike she and her husband endured.

Hiking can help us become closer to nature and to ourselves. We find out things we never thought possible when taking the leap to hike a challenging trail. I definitely recommend this to readers who love a book that even challenges them.

I truly loved The Twenty! I consider myself a hiker and outdoorsy person. I just turned 60 and hike all the time with my dogs. The milage and elevation gain that Marianne and Joe hiked everyday was extremely impressive, no matter what age you are. Marianne's descriptions and attention to detail made me feel like I was in Corsica hiking along with them. I could feel Marianne's pain and suffering, along with her pure determination. What a wonderful message Marianne shares, that age is just a number and we should always be adventurous enough to fulfill our dreams! Thank youMarianne for sharing this amazing trip with all of us!

Well written and it drew me in. I didn’t feel like she sugar coated the difficulty of the hike like so many long distance hike books do. I thought she did a nice job interweaving her younger experiences with the current hike although some of the transitions to the before-times were a little abrupt. All of her hiking mates were engaging too!

I’d love to know more about her and Joe and how they saved up enough to retire early, go on amazing long trips and then move to a high cost of living area to be near their adult kids. That is such an accomplishment!!

The GR20 sounds super hard and this book did not leave me wanting to make the trek myself! Props to her for conquering that hard trail!

Bohr’s magnetic narrative draws readers in and invites them to live vicariously through her vividly painted word pictures. And though I didn’t strip off my socks—pulling white flesh with them—at the end of each day, I journeyed alongside her on treacherous terrain, ascending and descending razor-sharp scree, jagged granite, and sheer, slippery rock slabs. It was as if I, too, felt my cautious way along narrow ledges and lived the leg-trembling reality of the 124-mile trek across Corsica. THE TWENTY is a story of human resilience that swept me away.

Breathless at times!

I am not a hiker, but loved reading about this adventure! Very descriptive of the landscape(s) of Corsica and I loved feeling the emotions of each day on the trail. I loved how the author wove flashbacks of her life into the associated aspects of hiking The Twenty. It was an exciting read and also touched my heart in many ways as the trip proceeded. Lots of information about what happens on a trip of this kind (where do you sleep? Bathrooms? Food? ). Lots of details about the other hikers made it very interesting. I thoroughly enjoyed this book!
