This is basically a panoply of chapters from various authors' books on photography and film in the light of the demise of apparatus theory of the 1970s. Some of the stronger points are made by Laura Mulvey; apart from her essay, much of the content featured in David Green's compilation is pretty mellow in illuminating anything markedly new. Many of these insights are self-evident or they represent a slight softening of the rigidity of the 1970s theories. Everyone seems to be fascinated by the material manipulation enabled by VHS and, ultimatively, digital technology. Also, Roland Barthes still seems to posssess the landmark status in everyone's eyes here.
