Time: The Untold Story of the Love That Held Us Together When Incarceration Kept Us Apart

Rate this book
"If it's not facing 297 years in prison, it's not a problem."
--Richardson family motto

The twenty-one years that kept Rob separated from his wife, Fox, and their six sons was long enough. As Rob survived two decades at America's bloodiest penitentiary and Fox raised their sons solo, they never stopped fighting for Rob's freedom and for their futures against the statistical odds. All the while, it was love that carried them through.

The Academy Award-nominated documentary Time introduced audiences to Fox and Rob, who riveted audiences with their relentless fight for each other and justice, despite America's broken prison system. This book tells the rest of their story. In alternating voices and intimate detail, Fox and Rob reveal what the film does not--how a person can cultivate the radical love needed to see them through any hardship and how miracles can happen on the way.

As they peel back the layers of their unforgettable love story, you'll discover the secrets of perseverance and the power of a resilience that is founded on faith in a God who never gives up on us.

I abandoned ship on this one at the 50% mark.
I already know how it ends, and am happy for this family to be reunited; just didn’t want to waste any more time reading about it.
The actual incident that landed the married couple in prison, armed robbery, was barely covered, and even then in broad terms, before moving on to describe how wronged they were by the entire correctional institution.
Don’t get me wrong: I do agree that our prison system is a mess, that people of color are blatantly mistreated, and that major overhaul is needed. But before even getting to that part of their story, I wanted some real soul-searching, deep-digging reflection on why two entrepreneurs, one with multiple college degrees, and with young children waiting at home, mutually agree that holding up a bank at gunpoint is a good way to make ends meet.
The fact that this was glossed over means the rest of their preachy, sanctimonious testimony holds little sway.
Thanks to #netgalley and #bakerbooks for this #arc of #time Time: The Untold Story of the Live That Held Us Together When Incarceration Kept Us Apart in exchange for an honest review.

I know this story and have seen the wonderful documentary TIME (on Amazon) that was nominated for an Academy Award. Sibil and Rob Fox-Richardson tell an amazing story of grit, perseverance, God’s grace and love that has the first and last word. Read the book and watch the documentary. Inspiring.

If you've ever been someone who questioned whether or not love is enough to make it through hardship, trauma, and the separation of incarceration then you should read Time by Fox Richardson and Rob Richardson.

Book Quote:

"Part of the healing journey for both of us has been about doing our best to make space for each other's vulnerability. But also making sure we stay grounded together in the things that matter. We pray together and dream together. We do our social justice work with an eye on helping other families begin their own journey toward healing."

Rob and Fox fell in love when they were teens and while mistakes were made their love and commitment to one another never wavered. This book is both their testimony and a glaring account of the impact incarceration has on the family unit and one's own sense of humanity. Rob and Fox are blessed to have had each other, a deep sense of loyalty, and a community of support around them when it mattered the most. As a mother myself I was heartbroken to read the experience Fox had when trying to enroll in prison programs that would grant her an ability to be reunited with her children. I found myself relieved at her ability to advocate on her own behalf in order to get the work release needed to earn an income in order to eventually make that possible. While Fox and Rob tell their story in intersecting narratives their five children are most definitely centered in this retelling. The determination to see the family reunited is what motivated the strength of spirit both partners displayed in many ways.

Thank you to the author and publisher for the e-arc copy!

This is the story of Fox and Rob. This book tells the story of how they kept their love alive while Rob was incarcerated for 20 years and how they fought to get him out of prison.

This book truly is a love story, but also shows (in the couple's own words) how when someone makes connections and treats others well that people will fight alongside them.

Neither of the couple is arguing that they did not commit the crime they were charged with or that they did not deserve to do "time" but that the "time" given to Rob was unjust based on the crime and similar crimes and sentences given to others.

I know they are equal partners and equally responsible for how hard they worked to make life happen for their family, but I was particularly impressed with Rob and his ability to not let the system ruin his outlook on life. Being in prison is not something that is easy to "make the most of" but he is truly someone who did just that. I was also impressed on how much he worked at being a loving, present husband and father despite his circumstances. There was even a point in time where Rob was put into solitary confinement for something that got posted on social media. That alone can break a human, but he still tried his best to help others.

I watched their documentary when I did my Oscar death race in 2020 and I'm going to be honest, I don't remember much about it, but this book will stick with me. It took me too long to read my ARC, but I want to thank the publishers and authors for providing me a copy to read and review.

Thank you to the Goodreads Giveaway that allowed me the opportunity to win and read this Book.

I never saw the Award-winning Documentary "Time" but am intrigued to do so after reading this inspirational memoir. The decades of struggle that this family endured due to the horrific unfairness and brokenness of the American Prison System was both heartbreaking and unbelievable in their strength, perseverance, faith and ultimately love. I was amazed and in awe of the fight and fire in both Fox and Rob to never give up even when you feel all hope is lost. Love carried them through. I agree wholeheartedly that this was a story that needed to be told and heard.

A beautiful story of love and perseverance and the sad realization of our broken system that more often than not unfairly incarcerates individuals. The damage the unfair sentence could have brought to this family had they not chosen to radically love…would have been one more failure to count against the broken prison system. These two people will make a difference…much reform will be developed as they are passionate to create change.

Time is a heart wrenching, emotional story shared between Rob and Fox Richardson. As they retell their journey that includes robbing a bank, going to prison and the trials and victories experienced along the way, they draw the reader into their personal story. It’s an amazing testimony of love, patience, perseverance and God’s providence even in the midst of deep challenges.
