When the conquering Vikings settle in North America, they realise that their new home might not be as pleasant as they thought. The land is green and fertile but will they ever become friends with the natives, the fierce and war-like people they call Skraelings? Or will they be forced to return to Greenland?
A former actor, theatre-director and drama teacher, Deary says he began writing when he was 29. Most famously, he is one of the authors of the Horrible Histories series of books popular among children for their disgusting details, gory information and humorous pictures and among adults for getting children interested in history. Books in the series have been widely translated into other languages and imitated.
A cartoon series has been made of the series of books and was shown on CiTV for a period in 2002.
The first series of a live-action comedy sketch show of the same name was shown on CBBC in 2009 and a second series is due.
Terry is also known widely throughout children and adult reading groups alike for his True Stories series (see below for series list).
He received an Honorary Doctorate of Education from the University of Sunderland in 2000. His numerous accolades also include the Blue Peter "Best Nonfiction Author of the Century" Award in the U.K.
This book is a part of the ‘Viking Tales’ series by Terry Deary. It centres around a young girl named Irpa who is fascinated by the history of her family and how they settled on their land. Her mother reveals the enemies of the Vikings, the Skraelings, and why they should avoid them, although this just heightens the young girl’s curiosity. After an attack from the enemy, the Vikings devise a plan to leave their village safely and to fool the Skraelings. In order for this plan to work, they need someone who can run extremely fast and coincidently, Irpa is chosen. She successfully fools the Skraelings and the Vikings are able to flee without being attacked.
I enjoyed this book and I even learned some facts about Vikings I did not know before! It is clever the way the author has integrated the history of Vikings and how they settled in different lands, such as Greenland. The names of different characters, such as Irpa, Karlsefni, and Freydis also keep in with the Viking era and the illustrations clearly show their living conditions and clothing. I believe this book would be excellent for 10+ and present history in a different form that may be more appealing to children.
Read this in mind to use with my Year 3 class (aged 7-8) for our Saxon and Viking topic.
This is a great book that is full of Viking information. The story is set in North America, and it gives good information about Vikings trying to settle in new lands. Also at the end of the story, there is a page that gives a little more historical background to the story.
The sentences and the pictures every 2-3 pages make this a very child-friendly book. I shall be using this book for Guided Reading, and I know my children will really enjoy this story!
I listened to this on audiobook. This story centered on the Vikings in North America, and suggests why they did not thrive there. There is also a bit of Norse mythology mixed into this story.
really enjoyed this and cant wait to give this to my niece who loves history it brought back memories of when i did abt the vikings in school and dressed up as one i loved the bit at the end of how the viking discovered usa !!! loved it going to look for more !!!!!
Another short historical tale with fantastic elements from Terry Deary and this is again a decent story without being overtly brilliant. The stories do begin to blend into each other after a while with Deary, but they are still decent reads.
