In his excellent new book, Peter Wende concentrates on the historical interpretation of the key periods and turning points in the course of the history of Germany from the Romans up to the present and shows that German history was actually the history of many Germanies. This complex and compelling story is adeptly told in what should remain the standard concise history for many years.
Peter Wende (born 1936) is a German historian and author.
He was formerly Professor of History at Frankfurt University and Director of the German Historical Institute in London. He is now retired and lives in Frankfurt.
I thought I knew a fair amount about Germany's history. The book is thin, 185 pages of actual narrative. Turns out that there was A LOT I didn't know. For example, Germany as a country is relatively new. Germany as an empire goes wayyy back.
I researched for a book about the history of Germany that was well thought of by historians. This was listed as first or second best. And they are right. It certainly filled my expectations.
