A Thoroughly Modern Princess: A Royal Romance With America's Sexiest Playboy and Wedding Scandal

Rate this book
Love Can Be a Royal Pain!

A most impetuous princess, Her Highness, Emmaline of Verdunia, would have wed her suitable prince and been done with it -- if she hadn't been swept off her feet by Granger Lockwood IV, "America's Sexiest Single Man." Their one brief dalliance was indeed magical -- but now her wedding gown is feeling a bit tight in the waist. So Emmaline flees, hurtling across the Atlantic in the private jet of the surprised playboy who ruined her life . . . or, quite possibly, set her free.

Now everyone is looking for Emmaline, from the press and paparazzi to her irate royal family and furious fiancé. And Granger, after pulling off the decade's most daring rescue, now has a pampered princess on his hands who's gone from pomp and circumstance to Big Macs and daytime soaps. Worse still, he's actually falling for this delightfully infuriating blue blood -- and he's the last man on Earth she could ever marry!

New York Times bestseller Wendy Corsi Staub is the award-winning author of more than seventy published novels and has sold more than three million books worldwide. Under her own name, Wendy achieved New York Times bestselling status with her single title psychological suspense novels. Those novels and the women's fiction she writes under the pseudonym Wendy Markham have also frequently appeared on the USA Today, Barnes and Noble Top Ten, and Bookscan bestseller lists.

Wendy grew up in a large, close-knit family in rural southwestern New York State and decided she wanted to become an author while in third grade. She worked in two independent bookstores during college, then moved alone to New York City at 21 to pursue her dream. After stints as a book editor for a Manhattan publishing house and an account coordinator for a major advertising agency, she sold her first novel, the supernatural young adult thriller SUMMER LIGHTNING. Early in her writing career, she published in various genres including suspense, horror, historical and contemporary romance, television and movie tie-in, and biography. She also co-authored a mystery series with former New York City mayor Ed Koch and has ghost-written for a number of bestselling authors and celebrities.

Wendy now lives in the New York City suburbs with her husband of nineteen years and their two children. A 1986 graduate of the State University of New York at Fredonia, she proudly delivered the keynote commencement address at her alma mater in May 2008 and is serving a three-year appointment to the Dean's Advisory Council for the College of Arts and Sciences.

A brief interlude with a dashing American millionaire, Granger, before her arranged marriage leaves Princess Emmaline pregnant. Unable to go through with the marriage, she calls up Granger and enlists him to help her escape mere hours before the ceremony.

Highly enjoyable with a great plot. Emmaline and Granger need to own up to their feelings sooner, but they are absolutely adorable together. The ending was touching to read as well.

My fault. I picked up the book because it was by one of my favorite mystery authors. Didn’t know it was going to be a sappy Hallmark romance. Not my thing. For a romance, it wasn’t too bad. I’ll be more careful in the future.

Another reviewer hit it on the head... "Predictable, yet charming. A quick, fluffy read that's good for a day where you're not feeling your best." It's not deep, but it's a lot of fun.

This was a quick and easy read, although very far-fetched as well. Princess Emmaline has a one night stand with a handsome American and winds up pregnant. She decides to abandon her fiance and seek the baby's father's help. Will the two fall in love and live happily ever after? I doubt anyone needs more than one guess to answer that question. It was enjoyable to read and equally forgetable. I give it a C-.

I found absolutely charming!

Imagine a princess in a realistic environment having to fend for herself, all without the privileges she grew accustomed to. Top that with a pregnancy and the father being a rich yet bored with his riches guy that walked away from it all, just as he figured out that he was going to be father. Sprinkle with a little drama from the media- and voilà! A perfect way to entertain yourself for the duration of this interesting book.

I read another review that said this was "predictable, yet charming." I think that sums it up quite nicely. I was pleasantly teary at the end. The book had none of the darkness of the other books I've read by this author, and makes sense as a standalone instead of part of a series, but a really easy read that eased a couple of train/subway rides.

Honestly, all I can say is that the story was cute, easy to read and funny. The relationship between Emmaline and Granger is hilarious. His first trip to a 'walmart' through me into a laughing fit and almost pee'd myself!
Yes, it was a bit far-fetched and very predictable, but oh so cute that you just can't help but read in one sitting!

I liked the premise of this story but the execution was a bit off. I was frustrated at various points in the novel with both main characters. They didn't seem to move the plot along at all. In fact, they seem to hold it up in various ways.

This was a reread for me (I read it for the first time shortly after it was published), and it was so different reading it now as an adult. I still enjoyed it, but I definitely found certain characters more annoying than I remember previously.

Still a fun, quick read!

This was a pleasant enough read, but although the situations were amusing, they never reached the level of hilarity that would make me laugh out loud.

What a fun read! It was kinda neat watching Granger and Emmaline actually admit that they loved one another. I also loved the addition of Brynn's character.

It was a little much on whinny part and to much denial. So what’s up with the royal parents not really concerned that should have been added. Not that great of a story
