Ryan Andrews is on the run from past mistakes he doesn't know how to fix. Lost and alone, all he really wants is a place where he can be himself, but when he pulls up at the ranch where he's found a job and spies his gorgeous new boss, Ryan is pretty sure fate is out to get him.
Jake Evans is an ex-soldier trying to carve out a life on the ranch he inherited from his grandmother. He doesn’t even have time to realize how lonely he is until the new ranch hand shows up in his driveway. Ryan looks even more lost than Jake feels, and Jake’s locked-up heart seems to break open. Can these two men find in each other find the companionship they crave? Or will their pasts eclipse any possibility of a future?
Cindy Sutherland is a first-time author in her early forties who never thought that getting involved in a fandom would lead to being published. She is an avid reader who would take in anything she could get her hands on, having inherited a love of books from both her parents.
She wrote in secret as a young adult, with only her family for an audience, and now is over the moon at the thought of sharing her love of writing with a few more people. Her favorite stress-busting activity besides writing is singing karaoke at her hometown bar, and she is passing on her love of reading to her daughter.
Cindy thanks God every day for an errant Youtube recommendation that led to her having the best group of friends she's ever had in her life, and she is looking forward to seeing where the rest of this journey will take her; and, hopefully, more stories to tell.
The writing was really all over the place, I found myself going back pages to check things to find that I was right and that they were written wrong! Also it was really hard to follow the POV was weird it kept changing leaving me not sure who was saying or thinking what.
By the end of the book it was like a game Spot the Mistake! The quality that I have come to expect from Dreamspinner Press is really slipping.
Not a bad story, but WAY too sappy for me. I just couldn't stand adult men talking and behaving like sentimental girls, sorry. I usually enjoy sweet and sappy, but this was over the top. On the other hand pov-switches didn't bother me.
Reviewed by Kristen: What an utterly beautiful story! It's one of those stories I will reread over and over again. I simply loved it. Cindy Sutherland created a story full of love and acceptance.
Ryan has had a hard and difficult past, one he wants to run from, but Jake shows him how much he deserves to be loved and that his past doesn't matter to him. I have to admit that Ryan's past brought tears to my eyes, but reading about how Jake handles everything soothed the pain I was feeling for Ryan. Every scene and every kiss speaks of love.
Jake's and Ryan's story is a story that doesn't end with the "I love you"s but which shows also what comes afterwards. The two of them fall in lust and love within days of meeting each other, but living in your own little cocoon and living in the real life is very different as those two quickly learn. There are setbacks and Ryan's past that need to be overcome, but in the end Cindy Sutherland shows us that love indeed conquers all.
This was 2.5, I didn't rate it as 2 because the author wrote an actual novel and not some half ass novella...
I liked it okay in the beginning, although I did feel the author was writing about 2 overly emotional chicks. I was happy to finish the book even though with the eye rolling I was doing, I think it took me longer to finish...and by the end I was over both MCs/ chicks.
If I had to read one more time about, "eyes filling with tears, "eyes shimmering with tears", "tears forming", "tears rolling", "wiping tears", "breath sobbing" I was going to have to be ill…AND this was all just one of the MCs...the other one cried too but mostly he just rode a horse around with no shirt and saddle.
4 stars for the beginning where the sweet assurances and honesty and the loving care of the horses were the focus. 2 stars for the last half where drama central took over and turned Ryan into a mass of apprehension, self-doubt, and tears. Sure, there was resolution for the issues that plagued him and while it really was a very emotionally frustrating situation, I was hoping for more gentle strength throughout instead of fleeting glimpses that were overshadowed by his tendency to be a runner. I was happy in the beginning and then got more and more disappointed as I read. Not that it's a bad book, just that I wasn't satisfied. There was a lot of sex, which was fine, but just not enough to keep everything going for me.
It was cute in places, but often too cute. (I never thought I'd say that.) And while insta-love doesn't always bother me, it really did in this story - I think I am more accepting of insta-love in fantasy/supernatural stories. *shrug* The drama with the crazy evil woman was a bit over the top and quite superfluous.
I'm not giving up yet though. I think this was the author's first book and I am keen to pick up Hunt and Pray and give it a try.
This was insta-love...like less than 24 hour insta-love. What followed was one cliche after the other. Including the 'I'm not good enough for you' and the 'clingy crazy girl' There was even the 'I can't live without you' hospital scene. That's just a sampling...There were more! UGH!
I enjoyed this story even though I could tell that Cindy was new to it. I didn't like the constant repeating of the characters name to each other I found that to be tedious and unnecessary. That being said however, I enjoyed the story over all. I have a few more books on my kindle shelf to read from this author and I am looking forward to reading them.
