When David Kincaid, an author down on his luck, is offered a dream assignment – to write about the death of a young man, the heir to a fortune – he can’t resist taking it. The fee is enticing, and it’s a paint-by-numbers job. The young man was high (so to speak), and he fell. It was an accident. Simple. To the police and the coroner, it was an open and shut case… but David finds that key witnesses have disappeared, or worse. And now, someone with muscle is taking an unhealthy interest in him.
David had a big reputation once; now he sees a chance to reclaim it. But to do so, he must persuade someone to give up a secret. And there’s another a killer with a to-do list that has David’s name on it. To save his skin and solve the riddle of an innocent man’s death, David must trade in lies and secrets – some of them his own.

The title of this mystery thriller is taken from a Shakespeare line in Macbeth. It's something along the lines of meaning that no matter the bright future ahead there is always death waiting at the end.
Our main protagonist is David Kincaid. Living in Sydney, Australia, he's a down on his luck author who has been living off his brief fame from a book written twenty years previously where he exposed a murderer.
He's offered a lifeline by a wealthy couple that ask him to investigate and report on their son's death. While literally high at a party (in both senses) he falls out of a window to his death. The case is closed as accidental death. Will Kincaid's report confirm that and bring them closure? Is this the start of a brighter future for Kincaid or will the investigation be the death of him?
This is a smart thriller. The author knows the area of Australia well and he combines this sense of place with meticulous attention to detail and a clever plot that keeps us guessing about the result and the motivations of the characters. Interspersed with the story are flashbacks to Kincaid's big break twenty years before and the answer to another mystery.
I was really rooting for David. He's sympathetically written and I was willing him to succeed. It soon becomes apparent that his life is in danger and there's more going on than first appears.
It's everything you want in a thriller. Intricate plot, great characters, twists and turns and an ending that is just perfection. I was debating my rating but I think I've just talked myself into giving it ✨✨✨✨✨5 stars 🤩.
A very well written book......and a lot of characters too, but well worth the read. I have to admit I did have to check back a couple of times to remind myself of who was who, but that was only because I was keen to keep on track. The parallel sub plot of 'twenty years ago' could have been expanded into a gripping novel itself, but looking back (no pun intended) it was a welcome bonus. As the book progresses you star to guess 'whodunnit' but you are still intrigued to find out if you are right and to answer the question why.
3.5…. I enjoyed the premise of this book it’s an intriguing story set in the bowels of the underworld/high rollers set. I really enjoyed the twists and turns. My only issue was all the women were really just there as a sideline to the authors desires. Almost every woman was stunning and sensuous, I thought we’d outgrown such a two dimensional trope.
This novel could have been fleshed out with really interesting characters, the plot was excellent but I couldn’t ignore the female fill ins..
