Pirates is part of an exciting series of books for children who are beginning to read on their own. The easy-to-read text has been specially written with the help of a reading expert.
4.5 stars My 4yo is very interested in pirates. He loved the pictures but the text was a little boring for him. It says ages 6-8 and I think that's appropriate. Illustrations are amazing and the text for the reading level is spot on
We have read a few books about pirates recently and came across this one. Written with beginning readers in mind, it is a concise book about Pirates, with lots of information on who they were, what they did and how they lived. It's a bit graphic in its descriptions; discussing marooning, depicting the quartermaster giving lashes for punishment and sword fighting, discussing torture, and explaining how convicted pirates were often hung and then put on display in specially designed cages. Sheesh! Our girls didn't seem to be too phased by this, though, and I'm sure boys of the 1st-2nd grade set would love it. I feel there's a bit of a disconnect between the content and the reading level, but perhaps I'm too sensitive.
Normally, I wouldn't have been at all interested in Pirates, but after a trip to North Carolina, and vising the Outer Banks and the Coastal Plains of North Carolina I have become interested. Every other museum and exhibit out there is about the pirate Blackbeard (aka Edward Teach). So I was curious about pirates and as I was shelving this one I decided to read it. I got some new insight into a pirate's life....very interesting! Mostly for boys (but girls might like it too)
Although this book is very informative about pirates, I feel some information is more opinionated than factual. The book does a really great job at providing detailed pictures that corresponds to the text. The pictures are very colorful, eye-catching, and sometimes comical. I feel this book would be great for beginners to read and anyone to skim through for some factual information.
