Walt Morey was an award-winning author of numerous works of children's fiction set in the U.S. Pacific Northwestand Alaska, the places where Morey lived for all of his life. His book Gentle Ben was the basis for the 1967 movie Gentle Giant and the 1967-1969 television show Gentle Ben.
He wrote a total of 17 published books, most of which involve as a central plot element the relationship between man and animals. Many of his works involve survival stories, or people going into the wild to "discover" themselves; redemption through nature is a common theme of Morey's works.
I remember really liking this as a kid who sought adventure. It was serious, though, not carefree. Imagining following in the footsteps of a lost family member and role model in order to be close to them was a big idea that opened my eyes to hidden struggles in life. This "deeper" level of children's literature prompted me to grow up just a little bit, maybe someday.

I was reminded of when I was told, "too young" and "you are only X years". You will have to wait until you are older. Yet, the young man who works to save his family from debt after his dad dies in an underwater accident by diving in Alaska waters, overcomes those labels and qualifiers.
Not a bad book. Some of the characters seemed a little flat at times, but still a nice read. Did find the details about antique diving methods interesting.
Very good book, have read it so much in our family it is looking pretty sad. Need to find a new one. If we can find a good hardbound that is what we will purchase. They last a little longer.
Really enjoyed this story about a young man who works to save his family from debt after his dad dies in an underwater accident, by taking up his job of diving in the Alaskan waters. Exciting adventures from being shipwrecked, to releasing a whale stuck in a salmon trap. Set during the time Alaska got its statehood, I highly recommend this to all who enjoy a good out-doors adventure book.
