A young woman holds the key to solving the greatest heist of the last century. But she wasn’t even alive when the money was stolen…
As Eleri and Christina work their strangest case yet, the clues all lead to a string of robberies in the late eighties. But why is this a NightShade division case? And why is Eleri being forced to work it when she should be looking for her partner? Her SAC has promised her all the resources of the FBI to help find Donovan, but none of them seem to be getting used.
As she and Christina start to string together clues to both their own case and to whether or not Donovan is even still alive, they’ll realize they aren’t alone. Though the FBI isn’t doing much to find Donovan, all of his friends are. Together, they’ll uncover some surprising links between the string of robberies and an old enemy.
Solving this case will reveal deep secrets inside their own organization, but it might just kill their missing agent.
This 11th installment in the award-winning NightShade Forensic Files may be the deadliest yet. Can Eleri and Donovan both survive? Fans of Michael Crichton books and the Temperance Brennan series will find themselves binge reading this series from a USA Today bestselling author!
Skilled investigators in a secret paranormal division of the FBI search for their own missing agent even as they navigate a decades old heist mystery that catches the attention of their worst enemy. All the paranormal surprises you love and nonstop fear-for- your-favorite-characters action will have you turning pages way past bedtime! (Lucky me! I was able to read an ARC copy of this book! Review is unsolicited and honest.)
I wanted to love this book. Although I've followed this entire series and enjoyed it to date, I felt this book was not on par with its predecessors. The story was extremely disjointed, with a plethora of out-of-character behaviors, coincidences, and miraculous escapes. To add insult to injury, there were an abundance of typos, extra or repeated words, factual errors (wall studs in a hotel would NEVER be eighteen inches apart), and plot inconsistencies.
It felt like this was a rough draft rather than a finished novel. As a reader, I would MUCH rather wait longer for an author to publish a polished product than purchase a rushed, unedited story.
A lot of story elements were left dangling or had no satisfactory explanation. The actual case the agents were tasked to solve was abandoned. I expected the Mila/Brian subplot to be more firmly linked to the case under investigation, but their only purpose seemed to be unearthing a missing bag of money. Their reincarnated memories didn't even play into solving why the couple in Lake Superior were murdered. The bag they tracked down came across as nothing more than a tool for the author's cliffhanger ending.
Slow down, Ms Scudiere. Re-read your earlier works in this series, and give us a single, complete case per book. Provide hints and plot threads that can be explored in later books, but please don't shoot them at us with a fire hose or try to cram them all in one book.
Another enthralling read, so many cliff hangers my fingertips are raw! A graphic designer & a businessman happen to meet, when Mila, the artist, sees her dream car and has to have a closer look. The owner returns and she touches the car. Something weird happens, a feeling, a vision? Brian, the owner was going to tell her not to touch his car, as he usually did. But something stops him. Little do they realise their future is entangled with a couple who had the same make & model car - even the same cherry red colour, thirty five years previously. Donovan is still missing, Eleri can't function, not knowing whether he is alive or dead. Christina is holding altogether - just. Wade is in Florida. Walter and GJ are on another case together. Westfield doesn't seem to be bothered that Donovan has vanished, something is off and it feels like it is their boss. What is he up to? They all realise that Miranda Industries is involved somewhere, whether means trouble or disaster, they don't know, but previous experience has taught them to expect the worse. I love the Nightshade series, because there is just a chance that it could happen. Of course it's just fiction. Isn't it?
With Beneath Memory, AJ Scudiere has outdone herself. I felt like I was barrelling down the highway without breaks while reading this story. I barely had a chance to catch my breath at the end of one harrowing incident before the next one began.
It was such an incredible, heart-pounding return visit with some of her greatest characters. Knowing that this series is quickly arriving at the climax of its story is bittersweet. I know it is going to be powerful and mindblowing, but it is going to be over. I know how I felt at the end of Sin's story in Justice. I can only imagine what I will feel when Eleri and Donavan's story ends.
I would highly recommend Beneath Memory to everyone. New readers of AJ should start with Under Dark Skies. I feel the series is best read in the order it was written. All of them are wonderful stories, but you may be a bit confused if you read them out of sequence.

Plot no spoilers: Agents Eleri and Christina are sent to the scene of an automobile accident from in the late 1980's. The car has been well-preserved in the cold, cold waters of Lake Superior. But why, with their special abilities would they be sent to oversee this? Meanwhile, two civilians start receiving the memories of the two victims of the crash. A long-ago crime is about to be exposed and explained, but not without extreme danger and heart-stopping car chases.
Intriguing. In the end, though the immediate situation is sufficiently resolved, my criticism is the cliff-hanger type ending that points us to the next in the series.
If you've read others in the series, you will not be disappointed.
Eleri’s partner, Donovan, has been missing for about 2 months, and yet Agents Eleri Eames and Christina Pine are not looking for him. Instead, their boss has them working on a newly discovered car accident. Sure, it’s an interesting case, as the car has been underwater for approximately 30 years and the two bodies found in it are perfectly preserved. But their hearts are not in this case - they want to find Donovan! Westerbrook won’t tell them what he knows about Donovan’s case so they take matters into their own hands while working the car accident. To say much more would ruin the tale, so I’ll stop here.
It’s a different approach for author A.J. Scudiere, for sure, and definitely a great read. You will be surprised at where A.J. takes the story, and I promise you won’t be disappointed.
What an engaging author! Her depictions of the characters are spot on. At times, writers can only sympathetically portray characters of their own sex. Not so with A.J. Scudiere , she is gifted in the art of exposing her characters personalities so well, that I feel as if I have personally become acquainted with them. Each character has a place in my heart, as I pick up this novel I wonder if this will be the end of the series. Who will survive, who will take a new place as head of the "pack"? As I turn each page, I fear will all of the characters survive? Will a new agent enter the group? What paranormal skill will they bring, will they complement the others, or will a new agent tear the group apart? A.J. is a gifted author, she brings unique skills to the pages of her art. I fear for each character and pray that each will bring yet another experience unlike anything else.
What an absolutely grand story in Beneath Memory by A.J. Scudiere. This is the eleventh book of the NightShade Forensic Files series. This is the last book she has published in this series. And even though they are standalone books, the books are so "binge" worthy. It's not just a robbery, it's a heist, and the clues are opening up more questions than answers. More secrets are revealed, and it is an action-packed story. The plot drives the story, but the characters, everyone is important to the story. Beneath Memory is a definite recommendation by Amy's Bookshelf Reviews. I read this book and give my honest and unbiased review. Amy's Bookshelf Reviews recommends that anyone who reads this book, to also write a review. I hope to read more books by this author.
Memory and Reality blend together in a perfect mix! Beneath Memory is the 11th book in the Nightshade series and another must read. The plot moves on two levels with both levels intertwining and moving fast towards a really great ending. Like all A. J. Scudiere books the setting, atmosphere, the characters, and the plot all blend to create a world that we all want to be part of even if the world never really existed. The setting is more widespread than some of the earlier novels taking place in Northern Minnesota, California, and Florida. The action takes place in the past and currently. The main characters are familiar to the readers of the earlier novels, but they inhabit different roles than in the past books and that keeps them interesting.
Beneath Memory By A.J. Scudiere Reviewed by Felix Bearden Some authors, I’m one of them, have a real life person they visualize, for their character while writing. For example, I use Tatiana, the retired marine, for one of the characters in “Family Affairs”. If A.J. is one of those authors, she has a lot of people to which she needs to send Christmas Cards this year. “Beneath Memory” contains every character included in the Nightshade Forensic Files series so far. But they appear in the action packed, emotional, and sensitive manner that no other writer has the skills to match. The ending left me hungry for more, so I am looking forward to that publication. I would rate this book at 5 Red 63 Ford Falcons. And A.J., you can email me my Christmas Card.
An absolute home run! Filled with plot twists and turns, suspense, and amazing characters with "special" talents. Some series get stale after a few books, but AJ Scudiere has such an unbelievable gift of writing she makes each book even more exciting than the last. She not only achieved that thrill in "Beneath Memory", she has achieved that in ALL of her series! AJ's next release can not come soon enough!
This is a wonderful addition to this thrilling series! Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start. Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable. Great suspense and action with wonderful world building that adds so much to the story. Such a thrilling read that I couldn't put it down. Can't wait to read more of these. Recommend reading.
I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.
A.J. has done it again. Old faces, new faces, where is Donovan?. Wait, what?? How does this tie together? Okaaaay, just keep reading. I know A.J. will put it together. With switchbacks and crossing trails, Eleri and partners pursue people, answers and logic. And Yes, A.J. brings them together in the end with…. “Don’t touch it. It is part of something much bigger”. I for one can hardly wait to join them in the next book. Thanks, A.J.
Beneath Memory is amazing! The characters are ever evolving and a delight to read. Eleri and Donovan have come so far and yet I hope their story never ends! AJ writes so thoroughly about what's happening its like you're right there in the middle of the action. I have to constantly remind myself to relax, that it's "just a story". But what a great ride while it's happening! I cannot wait for the next book. AJ you've outdone yourself again!
Once again AJ has come up with some interesting turns in Be Bringing us old friends to help with this Night Shade series book. She is my very favorite author and I truly love her books. (I admit sometimes I have to go back and reread a few pages to ensure I understand.) I love Ellie’s character and the feelings she has for her missing partner. Dead bodies, old friends and new friends l feel her pain for Donavan. Also trying to go up a large company with many resources.
This is so intense in parts that I had to put it down to break the spell. Yes, it's that good. I really hope we hear more from the reincarnated couple, they are fun and play well off the other characters. And what could Elerie's boyfriend possibly want after being such an ass. The end is rather abrupt, but just think of it as a rather good-sized Vella. Excellent writing as always.
Thoroughly enjoying the series. The character development is great and switching between the characters and their back stories keeps the series interesting. I would have given this book a 4.5 but only for the abrupt drop of the minor characters. Would have liked more explanation on the cause of what triggered their getting involved and are they 'special' too? Looking forward to the next book in the series and more info on the MI protagonist.
My favorite characters are back! The action in this book is never ending. AJ did a great job with this one. Had to force myself to put the book down to avoid staying up till I finished. As always she answers some questions but leaves you hanging on with some more. Of course I learned a few thing along the way.
This book was incredible! The story continues with Eleri partnered with Christina. Eleri has no idea where Donovan. The two agents are investigating a 30 year old car accident that was actually a double homicide. Weird stuff is happening and you will have to read it.
What a great book. I have read all the books in the Nightshade series and this one really is good. We see the team working together using their strengths. Donavan is missing and Christina and Elena are partners on a strange case. They work both the case and finding Donavan. The story is nonstop action. I highly recommend this book and this series
What a fun and mysterious book this was. It was exciting from the opening page to the end. One thing though, read the opening prologue carefully. It does set the stage for the entire book. I can hardly wait for the next one to come out. A great read!
Absolutely love this series and author! A.J.'s books have humor, likeable characters, enthralling plots with intriguing storylines. Beneath Memory is the latest installment and does not fail to entertain. Cliffhanger to cliffhanger an excellent read.
Beneath Memory…..A.J.Scudiere A complex storyline which includes an 30 year old unsolved mystery, reincarnation, witches and werewolves. Both the story and the characters “magically” mesh together and it all makes perfect sense in the end. Amazing stuff. I think this is Her best book yet!
This is a really twisted series! There are constant threats to the good guys, especially since they don't know who to trust. I can't wait to see how this cliffhanger gets resolved.
Another good book in this series. Eleri and Donovan make an excellent team. Christine is added to the team with Wade. The gangs all here. Excellent writing and amazing mystery. Loved the book.
On the edge of your seat a page turner. Eleri found Donovan and saved the day as usual. She surprised me with some of her spells, but made them work to her advantages to get the bad guy's. Love the book can't wait until next one comes out.
The wolf and the witch continue to entertain. I was turning pages to find out what was going to happen. You are never sure and always guessing. You get the answer and it leaves you with another question.
