As Agents Heath and Eames uncover the truth, a decades old scandal comes to light. Even now, some are willing to kill to keep their secrets hidden.

Eleri wanted a different kind of case. She should have been careful what she wished for. When an odd human skeleton in Michigan’s Manistee-Huron National Forest triggers a NightShade investigation, Eleri and Donovan arrive to find it missing.

But two other skeletons are a little too easily uncovered—each displays different anomalies that raise alarming questions. The bones aren’t from the area or probably even the continent. A decades-old abandoned building doesn’t register on satellite images. Files detailing genetic experiments on children are even more disturbing, and most of the children are unaccounted for. Who were the test subjects and where are the bodies?

Eleri and Donovan believe there are others out there who haven’t died yet. But they will, if something isn’t done. Fast. If the case itself wasn’t enough of a problem, someone is watching. Someone with a particular interest in Donovan’s own skeletal anomalies . . .

The Atlas Defect is the third book in the NightShade Forensic FBI Files series by USA Today bestselling author A.J. Scudiere. This book can be read as a standalone, but readers who love paranormal investigations and FBI thrillers will want to read the entire series!

I liked this. I liked this a lot. When I first opened up this book and read the blurb, I wondered what genre it would be. From the summary, it seems like it would be mystery or just any other detective novel, but evidently this was not the case. Yes, there was some mystery to it, and yes, there was some suspense, but there was also a bit of an urban fantasy feel to it that really made the story different from any other detective novel that I've ever read.

I think a plot was definitely the strongest part of this book. The pace was very fast, and the second I opened the book, I was hooked. I really wanted to know what direction the story was going in, especially how much of it would be science and how much of it would be fantasy.

However, I did have a little bit of trouble keeping up with the characters and there seem to be some backstory that I was missing out on. But I wonder if this was because I went into the story without reading the previous books; I was told that this would be alright as a standalone, but I rarely start in the middle of a series, and this might be why. Sometimes I felt like I didn't really understand the characters (or the relationships between them) as well as I could have, and sometimes things happened that I felt a bit confused about because I didn't have any background knowledge.

Nevertheless I thought the writing style was a very good aspect, as it moved the story along at a very quick pace and I could definitely immerse myself in the plotline. I enjoyed the literary devices that the author employed to make the story more exciting, whether it was dramatic irony or suspenseful dialogue. Either way, I would definitely read the other books in the series and this book was definitely an interesting and unique read!

Ok done with this series. The stories are dragging and I’m no longer interested.

Eleri asks for a different kind of case – something more FBI like – if there is such a thing. Well she asked for it a she got it. Well at least on the surface she got it. An Odd human skeleton in Michigan’s Manistee-Huron National Forest triggers a NightShade investigation; Eleri and Donovan arrive to find it missing. While this is happening two other skeletons are discovered easily – Eleri thinks they were discovered much too easily. Easch of these skeletons display abnormalities. Not the kind that are created by a broken gene or such but those created by someone interfering with the gene pool. They do not recognize these bones as human – but they must have been right? An old abandoned building is found in the area but it has never been shon on area satellite photos. Perhaps a secret project. They find files detailing genetic experiments on children and they have no idea where these children are and if they are alive or dead. Eleri and Donovan begin reading files and pursuing the landscape. They come to believe that there are others out there that survived these experiements. But now they those behind these experiments – become aware of the FBI development they feel that if there those out there who have not died yet they will soon. In addition Donovan begins to feel that someone is following him – are those behind the experiments the ones now looking at Donavon? You will have to read to find out. I received this novel through BookFunnel, This is my honest review.

Eleri Eames was born with a silver spoon in her mouth and a mystic for a grandmother. Her uncanny string of successful profiles for the FBI left her facing an inquiry into whether she’d been involved...until NightShade scooped her and her instincts up and put her to work. With her partner, Donovan Heath, Eleri is following up on a report of ‘weird’ bones in a national forest – in a snowstorm. Happily, the snow isn’t a problem for Donovan’s nose – the fact that ‘weird’ might be an understatement, on the other hand, is liable to crack open something that no one wants to see the light of day.

The Atlas Defect was a highly enjoyable read, offering plausibly imperfect characters and an original slant on shape-shifters. Despite being the third in the NightShade Forensic Files series, I had no trouble reading it as a standalone; there was enough back-story evoked as the adventure progressed to flesh out the characters, without leaving the pacing bogged down in an info-dump. ‘GJ’ Janson was the only real weak point in the story for me; she went to far too much trouble to insert herself into the investigation to roll over that easily when push came to shove (trying not to drop too many spoilers here). Other than that, the plot contains a nice mix of macabre and mystery, the pacing is good, and the twists were nicely handled. Certainly one to add to your to-read list.

The Atlas Defect is an amazing story. I would give it 4 ½ stars. Right from the beginning the story grabs the reader and pulls them on a headlong journey through a well-constructed sci-fi thriller. The characters, especially the ones that have appeared in earlier books in the Nightshade Forensics series, were richly developed. More nuances of their characters are being revealed. Scudiere proves once again her prowess at creating plausible stories that the reader just cannot put down.
The only drawbacks I found in the story was the lack of a true antagonist and the story felt like it ended too abruptly, without any real closure to the case. Sure, most of the questions were answered. However I felt like they could have been answered in a more visceral way. I was especially disappointed in how the discovery of one of the main character’s secret by a character first mentioned in this story was never really resolved.
Overall I would still highly recommend The Atlas Defect to all fans of Sci-fi thrillers as well as all fans of Scudiere’s other books. I believe they will certainly enjoy the story.

This is the third in the series about two “different” FBI agents. They are part of a unit called NightShade.
Donovan and Eleri.
They investigate unusual cases. Human bones were found in the cold and snowy woods. While out in the woods they feel watched. Whose bones? Why is the first skeleton missing? Why do they have the same anomalies as Donovan?
It turns out they are being stalked by unknown persons. Lucky for them one is former army “Walter Reed” a vet turned private eye they met in the second book. She has questions about their unit. Donovan in particular.

What was interesting is when Dovovan, the stronger of the two is hurt, Eleri is up to the challenge. She has never really accepted her gift, but in this book, she steps up and uses what she must to help the Dovovan and the case.
I have read all three in the series all of them grabbed my interested, worth a read. Thanks to the author I was able to read this book in advance.
I have read almost everything A. J. Scudiere has written, her works is fresh, different and worth reading.

The Atlas Defect begins with a well-crafted forensic teaser that builds the suspense throughout the story. It lights the “fire of interest” for the unique main characters. You feel the robust landscapes of the story as the mystery grows and danger intensifies. Eleri and Donovan are seamlessly developed within the tapestry of story that keeps you turning the pages. They possess a fascinating mix of strengths and weaknesses that make their harrowing march toward truth breathtaking and plausible. This author does a masterful job weaving complex forensic science and fanciful fringe science. The blurring of the line keeps you on the edge as you take on the mission. You will feel everything. This book pulls you in. The NightShade Forensic Files could only be written by someone with solid forensic expertise and a love for the fringe from where all science emerges. Bravo A.J. Scudiere!

Donovan and Eleri are back for their weirdest case to date.

And they're not alone.

When they set out to determine the origin of odd skeletal remains, they find themselves at the center of a decades' old mystery that spans two continents, several states, and puts them in the crosshairs of one old acquaintance and one new. They're being followed, but by friend or foe?

And what are they to do when live people bearing the strange skeletal abnormalities turn up?

I absolutely adore this paranormal suspense series and have fallen even more in love with the two primary characters, especially Donovan. No spoilers, but you'll get a lot more up close and personal with the former ME and modern day werewolf Donovan. Highly recommend!

Simply can't praise enough these series - amazing depth and seriously thought-provoking plots.

The character development alone is very complex, not to mention the storyline!!

The plot (and complexity of it) have blown me away as well.

I had to google a few things more than once whilst reading this book (always fancied myself as a clever one, but this book showed me the errors of my ways).

The story of the "Disappeared" alone is worth reading this book - and how skilfully this was incorporated into the plot!

The only thing I didn't like - was the lack of a conclusion...

Nothing was done for the survivors in both locations...

But I guess it largely reflects the real-life should scenario like that take place for real.

Couldn’t finish it

I liked the characters but I couldn’t finish the book. It opens with two special agents digging up bones that were very strange, but they never say why they were strange. One of the two agents can turn into a wolf. A third person that was a former agent joins they search. Open or more of them go back multiple times looking for more bones. There’s a fourth mysterious person that is also involved and stole a couple bones. Why? What’s going on? After reading 36% of the book I gave up. Not enough answers and not enough mystery to keep reading. Maybe I would understand more if I had read the previous books.

It has a defect

While I liked the writing, the story had no conclusion. The army’s goal were benefiting mankind? Give me a break! So, we have brutality piled onto brutality and no resolution. Bad way to end an interesting story.
There has been an argument as to wether the atrocities of the Nazis like Mengele, should be allowed into scientific studies. It would have been interesting to have gone there. As it is, it is a story of atrocities which leave us hanging with no resolution. A shame!

Interesting characters and plot. Two agents of Nightshade, a somewhat clandestine department of the FBI, investigate the strange appearance of bones located in the middle of nowhere. Following the clues and teaming up along the way with a super soldier and a grad student, they work to unravel the mystery of why the bones are not quite right.
The story is well developed and the relationships between the characters solid.
This is the first novel I have read by this author and would definitely read more.

Intriguing

I haven't read the first two books in this series, but I think I may just go back and read them. I don't think it is necessary to read the stories, but reading this one kept me captivated. A unique plot of not just investigations, but unexplained and paranormal investigations. It's definitely a great read and the characters were great, and well integrated with each other. Something is going on, and the reader is thoroughly engaged in the story.

X Files Quality Sci Fi

For Mature Readers
Adult concepts and situations
Strong language (F-bombs throughout)
Some disturbing content

Agents Eleri & Donovan are called in to research several sets of human remains. What should be simple forensics develops into what may be a decades old and ethically unacceptable conspiracy.
Who is involved? Why?

Fast paced. Compelling.
Truly likable characters.

Good

I liked this and I liked how it worked in some of the history of the disappeared from Argentina. I loved that Walter was back and working closely with Donovan and Eleri. I like the fact that Eleri’s grandmere wasn’t able to send them a message. It is an interesting concept that the government was working on gene manipulation. I would have liked a little more closure on the case in the end but it was still a good story.

Great serie

These books are very well written and keeps just the right blend of supernatural, crime and fiction. We still follow our heroes, the FBI agent in the Nightshade division that solves strange cases, this time a covert operation with strings to the 70s and gene manipulation. I find the interaction between the main caracters and their story development more exiting than the case in this book, the reason i don't give it 5 stars, look forward to reading the next

Another winner

Just finished book 3 and have to catch my breath! Great story, characters continue to be believable and interesting. Subject matter sad yet fascinating. Expertly handled. So glad romantic side stories don't have main characters involved with each other. That would be a death knell.

An unusual body is found in a National park - not the death but the actual skeleton is off. So our Nightshade team is called in. What do they find - government conspiracies, stolen children, murder and love. Before we had climate change they decided to change the human genome to match the new climate but they got it wrong and now they walk among us.

Science and supernatural with interesting FBI agents! I really liked this book and will definitely read the next one in the series. If you're looking for an author that develops the characters while providing a compelling plot, this series is for you.

This is the 3rd book in the series and I think it you would need to read the series in order.

Not your ordinary anything!

This is a storyteller's book, loaded with facts, fiction, and action that will keep you captivated. The characters are definitely out of the ordinary, but their sci-fi aspects make them endearing and interesting. Nothing about this book is ordinary! Fun read!

Overall I liked the story and the characters, even the unwelcome GJ. The narration is good although not a huge amount of emotion in the reading. The main downside was the ending which was rather abrupt with several character issues unresolved and while there were answers to the main investigation they didn't really wrap it up too well.

Captivating combo of police procedural, paranormal sci-fi, and buddy story. This particular title is #3 in a series and although I didn’t read the first two, it wasn’t a big deal and there wasn’t a need for the “back story” as it stood by itself very well.

I found it hard to put down and enjoyed every minute and I may go back and read the first two.

The NightShade Forensic Files: The Atlas Defect

This was a very interesting read. I hope an experiment like this never takes place. It would be horrendous to do that to children. But I enjoyed reading this book and look forward to reading the next book in the series..

While the storyline was still fun to read, The Atlas Defect was a little too scientific cliche.
I still did not know exactly what Eleri is but the possible theory of Donovan's origin is interesting.

Engaging

Fascinating yet disturbing concept of secret government genetic experiments on children the kidnapped. A bit disappointing at no real conclusion and not following up on intriguing info regarding skeletons similar to Wade and Donovan
