Staff Sergeant Brett Black has a bad feeling that something is going to go terribly wrong. And as a Recon Marine, he pays attention to his gut. Only nothing can prepare him for what he encounters when he arrives at home from the base. His wife is leaving him, and there is nothing he can do about it.

Abandoned with a kid, the super alpha-male has to become domesticated quickly or find a willing substitute to help him with his son. Only the substitute he finds is no substitution.

Courtney Lawless is a true wild card. The budding librarian loves the classics and carries herself like a lady by day. But she also is full of life and surfs the waves of the Atlantic Ocean by night. Since her parents won’t pay for college because of bad decisions in her past, the reformed bad-girl takes a job as Brett’s live-in nanny to finish paying for school.

Brett has never seen a woman of such complex duality. Used to a wife who won’t clean, cook or even talk to him, when he starts to live with Courtney, he realizes what he’s been missing his entire life. Educated, amazing and refreshingly honest, the only thing that that this transparent beauty hides from her new boss is that she’s also the Lieutenant Colonel’s daughter.

Faced with another deployment to Afghanistan soon, the brooding Marine is forced to come out his shell to fight for what he loves, only this time, the war is at home.

Enjoy the interracial must-read romance of the summer, The Grunt, the third a longest book in Latrivia S. Nelson’s Lonely Heart Series today.

Special note from the author:

As a proud wife of a decorated, United States Marine, I’m happy to write this book about finding love while serving the Corps. I think you’ll find Brett to be a strong alpha male with endearing qualities, and you’ll find Courtney to be a strong, loving woman. The combination makes for a classic love story that sizzles with passion but warms you from the inside with sincerity.

This is also the longest book in The Lonely Heart Series. As a full-length novel, I think you’ll enjoy the extra pages and a few laughs.

Like so many others, my husband was wounded in Iraq. His road to recovery was hard not only on us but also on our two children. It took a lot. Words cannot explain the pain and worry of receiving “the call” that your husband has been severely injured. As a young couple, we relied on our families, our faith in God and the military for support.

A part of the proceeds from this book will be contributed to Soldier’s Angels (http://www.soldiersangels.org) for those who have served and have been injured. Check my official website for the date and amount of the contribution. We are aiming to present a check during the Christmas holiday. I would encourage you to consider them as your charity of choice as well.

Again, I hope that you enjoy.

Sincerely yours,

Latrivia S. Nelson

I loved this book, from page one. Brett is such a sweetheart. He is a tough, formidable Marine, but he's also a caring, warm, emotionally vulnerable man. My heart ached for him because of the way his wife treated him. It seems as though there was little of value to his marriage, but he did keep trying to be a good husband. I can't imagine how hard it was for him to go out on the frontline and have an indifferent, judgmental, unloving wife at home. Never feeling good enough for her or that he had done enough. That's so damaging to one's self-esteem. When he and Courtney make a connection, I was cheering for him. He needed a woman like her in his life. And it was on the best day possible for them to meet. It surely felt like God was answering his prayers.

I also loved Courtney. She was giving, cheerful, honest, lovable, motivated, and open. She had made some decisions that her family gave her trouble about, but I liked that she owned those choices and learned from them, and chose to be a happy person despite the low points in her young life. Considering what she was risking to be with Brett, I think she was very brave. Although Nelson doesn't pretend ignorance about the racial issue, I love the fact that this is not really the issue for Brett and Courtney's relationship. Instead it is the fact that Courtney's father and brother are officers and Brett is happily a grunt in the Marines, not to mention his emotional baggage from a toxic marriage. I liked that Nelson takes the time to show why that was an issue. The detail that Nelson gives about life in the Marines, both as a soldier and as family to Marines comes highly appreciated. There is no patriotic flag-waving per se, but merely telling it like it is. And for a person who is not directly involved in the military, but does admire what the Armed Forces do for Americans, it was welcome.

Even though I loved Dmitry's Closet, I found that this book touched me much more. While Dmitry was more of a modern day fairy tale, The Grunt is steeped in realism, but no less (actually more) romantic. Although Courtney is about Royal's age, she seemed more mature and more textured as a person. While I normally like a sexually inexperienced heroine, I think it was fitting that Courtney wasn't inexperienced in relationships, and she knew what she was getting into with Brett and his son. She had her eyes open and the staying power to see it through. Plus, it's nice to different kinds of heroines get their happy ending, and Courtney works hard for and deserves hers with Brett and Cameron.

As far as sexual tension and love scenes, this book was hot! I was like wow! I love that Brett is both vulnerable and open emotionally, not a playboy, but he definitely can give a girl a run for her money in the bedroom! Dang! That's all I'm going to say! Man I was feeling the heat there. Brett and Courtney had great chemistry, but it was also clear that Brett respected and valued Courtney as a whole person, not just a convenient body or sex object. Ms. Nelson really earned my respect with how she portrayed the sexual part of their relationship, considering the circumstances.

The family dynamics were also well done. I was afraid that Courtney's family would lean so hard on her that she'd break up with Brett, but I love that she stood her ground, and Brett stood up for her and next to her. I like that Brett told her brother like it is. I loved Courtney's mom, Diane. She was a real sweetie, but knew how to handle her husband and son. I loved that Courtney was close to her mother, and that her mother was very supportive and proud of her. I thought her dad and brother weren't as well-developed, but then Courtney wasn't as close to them. I also loved Cameron. What a sweet little boy, but also realistically portrayed. I wanted to give him a hug.

Although there were some mild editing issues, I continue to be impressed with Latrivia Nelson's writing ability. I loved the connection she developed and conveyed between Brett and Courtney. It felt like true love, but also realistic. Never does Nelson downplay how hard family life can be in the military, but the power of the love in the relationship between a military person and their spouse gives them the energy and the fortification to go out there and risk their life for us all. I was a very satisfied reader when I finished The Grunt!

Feb 2013 reread- I still love this book. The characters, the plot. I think there may have been changes made to the book. The part where Brett gets emotional because it had been so long since someone had wanted his touch not just endured it is gone in the kindle edition. I loaned mine out, so it was a redownload. I'm sad that Ms. Nelson took it out.
It seemed shorter as well.

What great book! I love the characters and the way they're drawn. I thought is was realistic, passionate and touching. I love little Cameron. He was a sweet little boy. Courtney and her mom were so beautiful and full of life. My heart ached for Brett when he made love with Courtney and he was overwhelmed with emotion because it had been so long since someone enjoyed his body and not just endured sex with him. Amy was such a bitch. How she couldn't love him and love making love with him, I'll never understand. I give this book 4.5 stars because of the typos in the Kindle edition. But it is still worth reading. I highly recommend this book.

BRIEF SUMMARY
Staff Sergeant Brett, comes home from Afghanistan to a not so nice welcome by his wife. He was abandoned, with having to care for his son alone. Now alone and not sure how to raise a child on his own, he finds help at the library. Courtney is a librarian and helps Brett in his time of need.

THOUGHTS (May contain spoilers)
I enjoyed this book. As much as I liked the story, I really enjoyed the way the story was being told. I liked that the author gave us some insight in to Brett and Amy's relationship in the beginning of the story, which helped a lot, Amy was Brett's wife. As the story progress and Brett becomes more vulnerable and open, it added to the plot and gave his character such an appeal. He was sexy, sweet, and very much likable. Courtney was a loveable character as well. Both characters together gave such good chemistry with each scene. I think the emotions from both Brett and Courtney are what made this book such a pleasure to read as well. The story was good, but I definitely felt the story came more alive the moment Courtney moved in with Brett.

The supporting characters were great to read as well. Brett's son, Courtney's family, and Brett's best friend Joe. I also felt the Kung Foo Fighting CD, *giggles* really had a life of its own throughout the book, it did bring a smile to my face every time Brett played it. I would definitely read the series and more books by this author.

I do have to say though, that David, Courtney’s brother, is not apart of the series and the author did include him within the Epilogue; however, I think he needed his own story. His character left a lasting and strong impression on me.

Story: GOOD
Intimacy: VERY GOOD

Okay I love everything about this story. I can't believe I waited so long before I read it. But I guess I'm glad I did. I needed this type of book right now.

Straight forward & honest love here. No games. Real issues. Colorful layered characters with LOTS of heart. And an interesting & gripping plot.

I lost count of how many times I teared up reading this book. Or how many times I gasped out loud due to some shocking reveals. I don't want to ruin anything, just read it. Please. You will be glad you did. This is a definite gem.

I'm definitely looking into more of this author's work.

Description: Staff Sergeant Brett Black suddenly finds himself widowed, with no one to look after his little boy. Enter Courtney Lawless, a wild-child, surfing librarian and the Lieutenant Colonel’s daughter. She’s recently been laid off from her job and agrees to become Brett’s live-in nanny. Passion and drama alike ensues.

The Good: This story is a super-hot and sexy page turner. It also offers rather fresh situations as far as IR is concerned. I was just as compelled by the story as the relationship. Unlike many a prickly IR heroine, Courtney is both interesting and sweet. It’s hard not to cheer for her. Oh, and that cover is H.O.T.

The Bad: See the editing section. Also, Black’s dead wife is painted as a two-dimensional villain with so few redeeming qualities that she dips into caricature. In general, this is a “stand by your Marine” sort of book, and if you have any womanist ideals whatsoever, it might rub you the wrong way.

The Naughty: Light BDSM, rough sex.

Editing issues: Craft and editing wise, the writing is so poor, that it is a credit to Ms. Nelson’s superior storytelling skills that I was able to get through this entire book. It’s particularly upsetting, because one gets the feeling that Ms. Nelson could truly become a reader favorite and an IR staple writer if she would only engage an editor.

Reading this in 2020 shows how problematic AF this is 🙃 first of all main female character was the ultimate manic pixie dream girl. She was there to make the main guy’s life easier. She cooks, cleans, takes care of his son and him just so she can get an emotional payoff of being needed. Instead of getting a story about a woman cultivating herself to be self reliant and having character growth, we got a story about woman being an unrealistic helper to the main male character. While she was written to be a passionate and loving person, she definitely could have been more assertive with her life and the decision she made and didn’t need to be a doormat.

The main male character is the worst type of man for the female character. He’s too passive, needy and not mentally and emotionally stable enough to be in a whole new relationship so soon after the death of his wife. The fact that his first wife was racist towards black people and him not saying anything to her despite the fact that his so call bff was black shows how complicit he was. He had no drastic character growth and just wanted a woman to take care of him and his child.

In my opinion, this book did not age well and since it was written a couple of years ago, I’m being less critical and more accepting of how the world was back then. Anyways, this book was a disappointment.

This was a book that surprised me on a lot of levels.

Level One:
Brett; our hero. Usually when an author writes about a man in the military they choose a SEAL or something along those lines. If the military hero is not high up on the chain of command then he's working his way up the ladder. This was not so with Brett. Brett's a grunt and he's happy where he is. This was so refreshing because it's not often that you get a character who's okay with not having tons of money or a grand title. Latrivia S. Nelson was able to write a character who was content with where he was without making him seem lazy.

When we meet Brett he's completely stressed out where his home life is concerned. The events that happen within the first couple of chapters are life changing and throw him for a loop. They would turn anyone;s world upside-down. No matter what happens to Brett, though, he picks himself up and does what he needs to do for him and his son. There were plenty of times while reading this book that I wanted to give Brett a high-five and a hug.

Level Two:
Courtney; our heroine. She was happy, smart and had common sense. At no point did I want to smack her. Also, like Brett, she was content being who she was without aspiring to be the greatest person alive. She was an every day person.

I felt for Courtney where her relationship with her father was concerned. He was someone who wanted to be the best of the best and didn't understand how Courtney could be happy with where she was in her life. While Courtney had spent most of her life living to make her father proud, when we meet her she's living to make herself happy and I applauded her for that.

Level Three:
The issue of race. The issue of race was not a central issue which I appreciated. It was however dealt with very realistically. Courtney's father had dealt with a lot of racism while he climbed up the ranks in the military and therefore had a bit of a problem with the race issue when it came to Courtney and Brett. Did I agree with his views? No, but I did see how he had come to view things the way that he did.

It was made clear whet the father's views were but that aspect of the story wasn't overdone.

Level Four:
The issue of PTSD. When most authors write about PTSD they cover the nightmares and flashbacks. Latrivia S. Nelson also hit on the anger that goes along with PTSD and she did it well. I never felt like Brett was out of control but he did struggle with keeping himself in check.

Overall, this book sort of blew me away. I wasn't sure that I would like it as much as I did but I was pleasantly surprised.

Thoughts
I really enjoyed The Grunt, the author did an excellent job with the writing. Then she threw a few unexpected curveballs in the storylines that i loved. I loved it so much i did not mind when i had to pick my jaw up off the floor a few times.
Courtney- I loved her spirit she was always positive. She was very loving and carefree it really showcased her character.
Brett- Is sweet and very loving he wears his heart on his sleeve and is not afraid to be sensitive or show sensitivity. He also stood up for what he believed and did not back down when faced with adversity.

My Ratings
Characters- Lovable
Writing Style- Excellent
Plot/Storyline- Emotional, Passionate and at times Intense
Steam Factor- Moderately Steamy
Overall- I loved it!!!! Very Enjoyable!

A sweet contemporary romance about a Marine soldier whose awful awful wife abandons him and his little boy, forcing him to hire a nanny to help out. He ends up meeting Courtney, a very loving, happy free spirit who basically shows Brett and Cameron (his little boy) what has been missing from their lives. The things that poor Brett had to endure, during and after his marriage ended, were soooo sad and heart wrenching, ugghhh...i felt sooo bad for him. :( Brett and Courtney's relationship/romance was very sweet and believable, it certainly wasn't an easy road for them though, given the circumstances, with his lifestyle and the disapproval of her father and brother, but thank goodness for her mother and their perseverance..and for HEAs in general!! This book definitely gave me an appreciation for what Marines (and prob. anyone in any military branch) and their spouses/families have to go through on a daily basis...hats off to all those people out there!!

This was actually a pretty good read. I keep thinking about this book and its story line. It came across as quite realistic, as if this could have really happened. There is quite a bit of emotions involved by the reader as well. Not just be a fantasy a story.
I am sure others will enjoy this story too.

I can freely admit reading this novel wasn't exactly planned on my part last night. I actually was clearing out my Carousel on my Kindle Fire when I realized I bought it ages ago and still hadn't read it. I started it and let's just say I woke up at 2:30 am this morning to continue reading and didn't finish it till this afternoon but all I can say is whoa!

Ms. Nelson has a way with characterization which kept me reading well past when I thought I would become bored and the storyline, though it seems rather trite (military man falls for woman who moves in as his nanny after a series of incidents leaves him without a wife), I was hooked.

I loved the plot, the pacing and sex scenes were downright HOT without being pornographic. I don't usually read romance unless it is paranormal or gothic in genre but this one consumed me and kept me wanting more. There is an HEA ending and I can't say it felt the least bit cheesy.

The only reason why I didn't give it five stars was because of the few grammatical errors I found but it certainly didn't stop me from reading this novel in less than a day. Well done and I will buying many, many more of Ms. Nelson's books.

Not much to say on this one. Too many things were just beyond realistic for me to hunker down and enjoy this. I kept thinking about "facts". Also, the dialogue employed by a little 4 year old -- another "not real" moment for me. Not my cuppa!

Love the reviews and the blurb for this one. And, especially that a portion of the sale of this book will be donated to http://www.soldierangels.org. I bought the book and look forward to reading this story.

I'm used to powering through tropes that bother me in romance novels, but this one just kept re-inserting one of my least favorite tropes in the center of the novel. If you're going to do the "my ex is evil/crazy/terrible person trope, you need to make me understand one of the two following things: 1) how they hid these traits from the MC (Brett) at the beginning or 2) the process of how they changed. In this book I'm suppose to believe that Brett's wife was super sweet when the met and then morphed into a silicone infused, lazy, money obsessed nightmare with no explanation as to how that transformation happened.

At the beginning of the novel before Amy has left him, the author tries to set Brett up as a good guy who's doing everything he can to save his marriage. They've gone to 2 counselors (Amy quit) and he's the one working and she doesn't have to do anything. The problem I had was it was also a series of him completely dismissing her concerns. She's upset and nagging him about the long hours he's away for the Marines. "Like he could help what the Marine corps decided to do with him." Just because you can't help that doesn't mean you can't acknowledge her feelings that it's a very hard situation and try to think of things that will make it better.

Then there's this exchange (first quote is his wife Amy):

"What does it matter to you, Brett? You're never here."

"Here we go with this shit again! Dammit, Amy, don't I provide a decent life for you here? It's not like you have to work or do anything, but take care of Cameron."

Cameron is three. I promise that taking care of him is a lot of work. Even though Amy was set up as a villain, being in Brett's head did not make me root for or have much sympathy for him

I am leaving out the ways Amy is a nightmare on purpose mostly because she was a 2 dimensional caricature that did not feel like a real person. Cheating on him? Check. Racist? Check. Gold digger? Check. Abandons husband and son? Check. Empties more that half of their shared bank account? Check.

I knew from the premise that Amy was going to leave so I was hoping that once it happened they'd move on from how awful she was and I could shove this section to the back of my mind, but I made it a third of the way in and that never happened. When he meets the new love interest everything about her is contrasted with Amy.

On top of all that the dialogue wasn't great, the book could use more editing, and what happens to Amy after she leaves strains reality.

Not even sure where to start....

This was just ok to me. And I hate saying that because it had SUCH potential. Still, there were too many instances of redundant word usage (can we describe his face in a bit more detail than "perfect" every single time?), the WRONG words used in common figure of speech moments, and the two leads, while loveable, did quite a few things that just straight up made zero sense. Even for a romance novel lol.

Brett was hot. I think. As far as I could tell...muscles and a "perfect face". And he was a sweet, sweet man who tried hard (I think? Maybe?) to make his marriage to his first wife (an unbelieveable b*tch straight from hell) work. I almost feel like it would have been better to have the story start long after the umm...demise of his first marriage. As it was, it felt like important, character building things were just TOLD to us in short sentences instead of SHOWN to us through important moments. I have to take her word for it that he tried with his marriage. I have to take her word for it that he truly loves Courtney and isn't just rebounding or using her for convenience because honestly, the way things go down didn't prove much.

Courtney ended up bugging me by being a little cavalier about how she handled her relationship with Brett's son. I mean, some things need to be THOROUGHLY thought through and decided upon before you allow them to happen. I won't go into spoilers, but lets just say the poor child develops a level of closeness to her that is TOTALLY allowed FAR before she herself is sure of how she's going to handle the relationship.

But overall, it was the important details that got left out and then explained away with a line or two FAR TOO LATE in the story that killed my enjoyment of this book. Well, that and the fact that I really do hate it when authors don't try as hard as possible to keep from repeating themselves line after line.

This is the very first book that I read by Latrivia Nelson...I must say that I absolutely adored this book... I'm now a fan...This book was very well written...I can't think of one negative thing to say about this book...I loved this story about Brett and Courtney...they were so cute together..What I really liked even more about this story, is that it seemed so realistic to me...I could actually see this story happening to anyone...She delivered in every aspect of this book...I felt a little sorry for Brett...seems like he was dealt a bad hand from the very beginning... I couldn't wait for something good to happen for him and his son...I think courtney is the type of woman most men would love to have in their life...Her spontaneousness kind of reminded me of myself...anyone who reads this will not be left disappointed...I could not put this book down...Kudos Latrivia...I definitely enjoyed:)

Touched my heart- BRAB Online Book Club

This story touched my heart in so many ways. Brett Black was miserably in his marriage to Amy. When she abandoned him and Cameron to go to her lover, he was devastated. A s luck would have it,he met Courtney at a very vulnerable period in his life. The chemistry between them was instant.

Courtney met Brett at a time in her life when she needed someone to believe in her. Even though she came from a loving family, she could never please her father. Courtney and Brett connected on a level so deep, no one could break their bond. She was willing to go against her father and brother who were both commanding officers for Brett.

The author has done a wonderful job in developing the characters. Some I couldn't help loving and others, not as much. In the end Courtney and Brett got their HEA and it couldn't happen to two most deserving people.

I must say that I've only read one other book by this author and I was really anxious to read this one based solely on the book blurb. I must admit that when I started reading this book I didn't think I was going to like it. Not because of the author's writing but because of the characters that were initially introduced. As I continued to read I fell in love with the hero, his son and eventually the heroine. This book was extremely well written. The characters are very relatable. The conflict was believable. And the resolution was timely.

As a true civilian with no knowledge of any kind of military jargon or what the different ranks and titles mean it was nice that I was able to read along and "feel and see" the characters daily lives. I really like the way that the hero didn't fight his feelings for the heroine and the way the heroine stood up for the hero.

2.5 stars.

There was a really good story here, with some absolutely fabulous passages. But it was buried under a million typos and incorrect word usage. A four star novel in dire need of a copyeditor.

2nd re-read but sadly, it's not a five star book anymore. The flaws are a bit more apparent and i just had to reduce it to 3.5-4 stars.

This book reads very dated, the writing isn't the best, and it needed another round - or three - of editing. But the story is actually pretty decent (if you ignore the melodrama behind the MMC's first wife), it never falls into misogyny despite the aforementioned first wife being thoroughly unpleasant, and it's pretty heartwarming. I kind of wish the author would rewrite it and release a 2022 version. I think the story would work much better now, in the light of Black Lives Matter and all the nutso political nonsense that have happened in recent years, than in 2011. Anyways, this book is worth a read if you like interracial (OwnVoices) romances; military romances; or stories with cute kids.

Brett Black, Staff Sargeant in the Marines, just wants to be happy. He dreads going home each night to his wife, who only sees the bad in everything his does and argues with him incessantly. The one bright spot in his home life is his son, Cameron. When Brett's life is dealt another blow and he finds himself a widower and single parent, he sets out to find a nanny.

Courtney Lawless is a bright, bubbly personality who loves life. Her father and brother are high-ranking officials in the Marines, so anything she does never quite lives up to their expectations. Having gone through numerous majors in college, her father cuts her off. Finally deciding upon becoming a librarian, Courtney meets Brett and Cameron while at work. Not only do Courtney and Brett share instant chemistry, but she also connects with little Cameron.

She soon finds herself in need of a job due to the fact that her position at the library has been eliminated, so Brett offers her the position as Cameron's nanny. Part of her really wants the job because she needs the money, but another part of her is cautious because she is extremely attracted to the devastatingly handsome and strong Marine.

As she settles into her job, her bond with Cameron and his father grows. Courtney brought life back into Brett's home and for the first time in a long time, he actually feels part of a real family. As their relationship grows, Brett and Courtney must be careful and keep their growing feelings for each other a secret. Both Courtney's brother and father are Brett's commanding officers and the fact that he's involved with her could possibly jeopardize his career.

I really enjoyed this story! Brett and Courtney's chemistry was electric, but their feelings for each other were also tender and sweet. I loved seeing glimpses of Cameron and can fully understand how Courtney grew to love him as well.

There were a few typos throughout the book, but nothing too bad. The one thing I took the most issue with was Courtney's father and brother. I completely understood why they were so protective, but their interfering towards the end of the book left a bad taste in my mouth.

The Grunt is a great love story that wasn't too bogged down with heaviness and focus on race. It just told the story of two people who found love and refused to let outside forces tear them apart.

I recently started reading this author per a recommendation by a friend who likes the author's "Medlov Family" series. I liked 'The Grunt'. Interesting characters, steaminess and drama. I felt for Brett due to all of his issues & appreciated the writing of how Courtney brought comfort and happiness into his life as well as his son's life. And he, in turn, was the good man she needed despite being everything she thought she didn't want.

I recommend it.

On a side note, I really like the cover of this novel. It's one of the better looking ones I've ever come across since multiracial novels can sometimes recycle the same covers or look rather cheap. Many kudos on a fabulous cover.

I really wanted to like this book because of the ratings. I read the author's book "The Ugly Girlfriend" a couple of days prior to this one and didn't care for it. I thought maybe that one was a fluke, but I guess not. I purchase both books at the same time on Amazon so I had it in possession so I gave it a try. I found myself rolling my eyes within the first few pages. By the time I got to middle of the book I couldn't take it anymore. Story lines were just too unbelievable and overly dramatic to the point I was rolling my eyes. I try to finish everything I start but I couldn't push myself to get throught this book.
