Of three required texts for a doctoral research design course, this was my go-to resource. The authors include general information on qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods research. There are several example templates that help frame purpose statements and research questions according to the method or design. Although the text doesn’t go in-depth on the types of designs, they provide an informative overview. Philosophical worldviews and qualitative coding techniques are also briefly covered. The authors used a direct, easy-to-follow style and I found the book helpful for beginner researchers.

This book was painful to read, and was not all that useful. It is intended to be an introduction to research, but instead it takes one of the most exciting things (learning through inquiry, collecting and analyzing data to better understand the world) and turns it into a chore. It is written in a dry and abstract way with very few examples. It describes a lot of research terms, but if you actually want to learn the process of research, this isn’t it. If you are a professor considering this for your course, I am sure there are better options!

6th edition has 260 pages of content (and a glossary and index) and is decidedly a textbook. I’d recommend this as required reading for undergraduates applying to graduate school, or a reference book for 1st year graduate students. I want to push back against the idea that this book works well for UX Research industry professionals - this felt much more applicable for academics who either want to learn about a method they have never used, or have not used for a while.

i have a feeling this will be a go-to resource during my msn and mthan programs — generally a good resource for qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods research designs with plentiful examples

Read the 6th edition. Succinctly does what it should. Very useful.
