The book employs the narrative dialogue technique between a philosopher and a young man to explore the philosophical and psychological ideas of Adler.
The young man went to meet an old philosopher to debate his views about life, with the hope of winning the debate. He, the young man, views life as a complicated whole and that it is only idealist theoretical to see life as simple – the view of the philosopher.
The young man believes that the simplistic nature of life is a theory based on a child’s perspective and that when the child becomes more aware of discrimination, war, inequality and eminent responsibilities he/she will see the complications.
The young man also believes that since religion which made man to rely on the existence of a divine, has been removed from the emerging world, every man now rely on himself.
The philosopher believes that the world is simple and it is humans that make it complicated based on subjectivity instead of objectivity.
To the philosopher, the world is a simple, constant existence and humans who are the variable have refused to change their subjective perspective of the world.
The philosopher maintains that it takes courage to look at the world from an objective perspective. To him, everyone without exceptions can have happiness and we suffer ourselves for not being able to change.
