With My Mom, With My Dad: A Book About Divorce

Rate this book
A sensitive story to meet the needs of children experiencing the stress of having parents divorce---for ages 4-8 Helping Kids Heal is a new series from Zonderkidz designed to help children cope with traumatic experiences in their lives. At the end of each book R. Scott Stehower, Ph.D., professor of psychology, Calvin College, and clinical psychologist, provides suggestions for parents and caregivers of hurting children. These books reassure children that God is with them always. Divorce creates deep pain for children and makes them if Mom and Dad stopped loving each other, will they stop loving me? Children often blame themselves for the divorce and wish that things could go back to the way they were. They may hate the stress of having to go back and forth between their parents' houses. Included are two pages of suggestions for parents and others helping a child through loss.

This realistic fiction book is about a boy named Justin and his family. Justin's mom and dad are having trouble solving their differences, and they decide to get a divorce. Justin realizes divorce is a little tricker than he thought, and he is having a difficult time splitting time between him mom and dad. This book relates well to my topic of different families because divorce is so common in families today, and this book does a good job of discussing a topic that can be difficult to talk about and understand. One thing I really like about this book is how realistic the lifestyles of the divorced family is to that of a divorced family in real life, and I think it does a really good job keeping the reader engaged.
