Extravagant: Living Out Your Response to God's Outrageous Love

Rate this book
God is lavishly, excessively, outrageously loving in every iota of His infinite being. God is, in a word, extravagant. It’s His nature.  When we realize just how extravagant and outrageous His love is for us, it unleashes in our hearts and minds an extravagance of devotion that transforms life into an experience previously inconceivable.  But that’s not all.  Our extravagance of devotion prompts further expressions of extravagance from God.  This is the extravagance cycle, and it is as real today as it was in 1000 B.C. for David or in 30 A.D. for Mary of Bethany. All throughout the Scriptures, we see that lives of extravagant devotion and surrender to Him captured the heart of God.  And they still do!  Experience the extravagant cycle for yourself. Recognize how much He loves you.  Offer Him your devotion and whatever resources of time, talents, and treasure you have, so He can bless and multiply them. It may be all you have -- that's what makes your gift extravagant.  But when you do the simple deed of giving it to Him, He'll work miracles and touch others through you in a way that will make you eager to see where the cycle takes you next.

Hats off to Bryan Jarrett for a life of extravagant faith. Bryan tells his story with clarity and emotion. God is good and has done greatly. I am confident Bryan's writing will cause many to increase their devotion to the invitations of Scripture.

Personally, I have never figured out how to apply today the Biblical teaching that tithing is public (Jesus watched the widow tithe her small amount) and the alm is private (Matthew 6). Bryan speaks openly about God's nudges to give alms and in so doing, he inspires us to follow. Sometimes I wonder if it would be a good thing to revisit the private alms teaching of Jesus.

That being said, Bryan's work is invigorating and faith building.

This is joining my list of must-reads. I loved this book. As a member of Northplace, I had already heard most of the teachings; but, Pastor Bryan is so wise and his story so moving. No wonder this is my highest rated book on GR.

FAVORITE QUOTES:
"Faith is forged in the darkness or in the hot fires of disappointment, and in those critical moments, we can look again to the two neon signs of God's greatness and grace: creation and the cross."

"So we can love, forgive, and accept others to the extent - and only to the extent--that we have genuinely experienced the love, forgiveness, and acceptance of Christ for us."

"God's message to us is always full of grace and truth, always in alignment with His Word, and is so persistent that it won't let us alone until we choose to obey."
