This is the true story of Frida Kahlo and her husband Diego Rivera, the larger-than-life painters who became the most acclaimed artists in Mexican history and whose tempestuous love affair, landmark journeys to America, and outrageous personalities made them legendary. Filmed mainly in Mexico, the movie traces Frida's life from her unbridled high school days to her death at age 47. This vivid book includes production notes, details on cinematography, set and costume design, and visual effects, music, notes by director Taymor, interviews with the cast, excerpts from books about Frida, reproductions of artwork, a historical timeline, and background sketches on the real figures portrayed in the movie.
Julie Taymor is an American director of Broadway theatre and film. Taymor's work has received many accolades from critics, and she has earned two Tony Awards out of four nominations, an Emmy Award, and an Academy Award nomination for her work, noted for its visual flair and colorful costuming choices. She resides in New York City with her partner Elliot Goldenthal, whom she has been with for over 20 years. She is widely known as the first female to win the Tony Award for director of a musical.
I am kind of a Frida-phile. I have numerous art books that feature her, seek out her art (even if it's just one piece) at any major museum, and have lots of biographies and fiction about her.
I don't know why her art speaks to me, but it does.
This is a great companion book to the film, directed by Julie Taymor. Besides a forward by Hayden Herrera (a Frida biographer on whose work the film was based), and introductions by Taymor and star Salma Hayek, this book includes an illustrated screenplay.
If you love Frida, you might ask for this one for Christmas.
i'm still cheating -- this is a review of the movie so i remember (i don't have letterboxd)
i started watching this in the plane next to my grandfather months ago and diego immediately started having sex with the model so i had to stop LMAOOOOO a surprisingly not that weird feeling movie abt frida it felt normal LOL but i liked it. i still don't like diego rivera that much. weird to have a medium amount of context even though i took mexican art over the summer and it was a hard summer. i miss spanish class so bad.
Overview of the movie Frida, starring Salma Hayek. Loved the quotes, director's notes, photos, and descriptions of how they created unique sequences of the movie, making her paintings 3D. I don't think I'll ever watch it though - after reading this I don't have to!
This book is an accessible overview of the artist's life and struggles. It looks at her personal and physical struggles from young adulthood to her death.
