Thrust into an age-old battle of dark versus light, Madeleine dives deep into the history of her family and into the vast paranormal underworld of New Orleans, a world seemingly controlled by her great-grandmother.

After diving into the world of the Twisted Ladder last week, the journey grows darker and even more complex with The Tangled Bridge. This is book #2 in the The Twisted Ladder series, so in case you're liking the concept I suggest you start with the first book, this is not one of those series where each book stands on its own. The world of the briar and characters involved need book #1 to make clear sense.

Now, I had a great time reading book #1, but I'll admit I was left wishing for more of the briar world. And I certainly got my share of it through this lovely dark little darling (and when I say little, I don't mean actual size since this is a 500+ pages read). In this book the world of the briar and its inhabitants play a much greater role and make a really memorable appearance. I loved the shadow and light play, the twisted sense of time, space and magic, the ambiguous nature of it all. A lot more of the action in this novel takes place in this original and charming world of river devils and magic, and it was entirely fascinating as it wrapped around me.

Madeleine and Ethan evolve and their relationship does as well. The mysterious and oddly fascinating Chloe becomes clearer in this book, her past and actions, her motives and MO-s became chillingly clear. It was tempting to see Zenon as the capital antagonist of the read, but I believe Chloe is a much more complex and frankly devious candidate for that position.
I was delighted by Bo's presence and I felt he helped bring out sides of both Madeleine and Ethan that helped their relationship evolve, as well as themselves as individuals. In fact, as a result of it I liked Ethan more despite not being a fan of his since book 1. Not like I disliked him, he just got lost between other powerful presences.
Madeleine was confronted with choices and circumstances that, I'll admit, became almost confusing at times. The book certainly demands your full attention, the briar world and everything about it is just so complex and layered that it can become confusing unless you're there 100%. So I'd say this is not one of those easier reads, though not heavy either. But it does make you think and it keeps you wondering all the time.

As far as story goes, things evolve from where book #1 had left them to bring out a clearer sense of bad guys versus good guys. While the first one kept a nuance of not choosing a clear side maybe for some characters, the story here clearly forces them to take sides. The two timelines evolution keeps the formula and events and circumstances become clearer not on themselves but through the perspective of that other time, other place, other person. I felt the '20-s timeline story was more complex and emotionally gripping, as Patrice takes more of a center stage and Chloe's nature is truly revealed through her actions. I really liked how everything came together, though if you have trouble or dislike following more then one developed thread in a story, this is probably not the book for you.
Settings were more of the magic nature here, we run into adventure and the journey scenario as Madeleine ends up traveling through time and space to bring different parts of the story thus far together.

As far as curb appeal goes, with that dark cover, the blurb and the reading experience of the first book, I'd get this for when I'm in the mood for some gripping and complex reading. It wouldn't be a compulsive buy as much as a I-wanna-work-that-brain-niche buy.

All in all, I loved the creativity and interactive history sort of vibe this novel had, and I enjoyed the entire journey it took me on. If you like complex stories that truly work your mind as you read them, then I say give these books a shot. I loved the reading experience.

I'm a little let down.
When I read the description for the book I got excited with the idea of a person having the ability to cross over between the living and dead. I thought it would make for an interesting book.
To be honest I had to push myself through this one. Not for lack of writing skill, but the story was just all over the place for me. I still can't formulate whether it's because I didn't read her previous book, or because it really was that confusing, but I am left unsatisfied.
Bummer too because I had high hopes.
There's always people out there that will disagree with me, but this is just what I took from it.

This is a gothic novel ut the LeBlanc family from Louisiana outside of New Orleans and the fight between good and evil. The alternative world is called the briar which is almost he'll with demon that haunt everyone. The family had special psychic powers and the ability to control people. This book is intergenerational with riches and enchantmens . It is a good read for gothic readers and mystery. I enjoyed the back because it was unique and multi-layered.

I love these two books in this series but this second one is rather confusing. I understand that everything and everyone is so intertwined, but I wish the plot signified it a bit.

Madeline LeBlanc comes from a long line of magic--they call it pigeon--where they can see the briar and the river devils who live there. All of us have our own devils who whisper in our ears, trying to get us to do wicked things. For the most part the devils are an unorganized lot, except that Madeline's great-grandmother Choloe and half-brother Zenon want to use the briar's power to change humanity itself. And the only people standing in their way are Madeline and the six-year-old boy Bo Racer who was born a being of light.

Don't let the fantasy label for THE TANGLED BRIDGE fool you. "Fantasy" is kind of a catch-all term for a book that's more Gothic than anything. This book has twisted family connections, voodoo-like magic in a New Orleans and swamp setting, and a struggle between light and dark. This book isn't for everyone, but there will be those of you who will really appreciate it for what it is: a well-written and original modern Gothic urban fantasy.

THE TANGLED BRIDGE is Rhodi Hawk's second in the series after A TWISTED LADDER. While I didn't read the first book I had no trouble jumping right into the story, it works fine as a standalone, although I suspect reading the first would add more depth to the story itself.

Narrated mostly from Madeline's PoV, and alternately from teenage Patrice's during 1927 (and a couple of secondary characters), both of their stories are told in parallel as they struggle to cope with their pigeon magic and its obvious inherently evil nature. Despite being the second book, Madeline's character doesn't stagnate. Her love for Ethan hasn't changed, but she's coming to understand how much he means to her. She doesn't understand why Chloe and Zenon want to kill Bo, a harmless little boy, simply because he has the lumen's light within him; and as a result has trouble reconciling the nature of her magic and what Bo's existence means. Patrice and the story of her brothers and sister--all teenage and younger--is less compelling than Madeline's and at times more a distraction than plot advancement. While the children are well-drawn they are simply less interesting (for me anyway).

However, patience does win out, and after slow but steady forward movement of the plot, Madeline finally begins to put the pieces together. Hawk ekes out the story bits at a time, which can be frustrating as we try to understand what the events mean, but the pace is necessary so that readers don't get overwhelmed with necessary back story, setting details, and explaining the magic. The prose is clean and descriptive without getting in the way of the story, but also sets a chilling tone to the events, particularly those that take place in the briar. Hawk does a great job describing New Orleans and the surrounds in a way that helps us feel the place, but without going overboard.

The events that lead up to the conclusion did confuse me at times (I'm wondering if it's from not having read the first book?), but didn't impede my understanding of what Hawk was trying to do, or my ability to enjoy a story that is original and satisfying.

Recommended Age: 16+
Language: A few handfuls of the coarser variety
Violence: A fair amount, the style is rather like a thriller
Sex: Referenced and a brief scene

The Tangled Bridge is the sequel to Rhodi Hawk’s A Twisted Ladder that follows Dr. Madeleine LeBlanc as she comes to term with her new ability, and her dark family’s history. The People in Madeleine’s family all have the ability to influence/manipulate people’s will/mind, something they call ‘ Pigeon Games’. In the previous book, Madeleine not only learns that her father isn’t really sick but can see in the briar (a dark and twisted place where the river devils resides) but she too has the knack. Madeleine’s life gets more complicated when she discovers her brother Marc, who committed suicide has a child (likely has the ability as well), and Zenon her long time neighbor is also her half-brother. Zenon tries to kill Madeleine by using pigeonry on her, but instead Madeleine used it on Zenon first causing him to stay in a vegetative state. Madeleine thought with Zenon being bedridden she’d be safe but it turns out Zenon is able to walk the briar, and is still taking over people mind without being in a physical body. Zenon and Great-grandmother Chloe is out to find Marc’s child, destroy all the Lumens (especially a certain young boy…Lumens are a group of people opposite of the briar children, Lumens are people full of light/life), and have Madeleine join their side or die.

In this follow up sequel to A Twisted Ladder, we learn more about Madeleine’s family, and readers get a more in depth look in the briar, river devils and pigenory. Madeleine is a strong character, she is always fighting against using pigenory for the wrong reasons, and although Severin (Madeleine’s river devil), Chloe and Zenon are pushing Madeline towards using more of her ability and walking the briar she never gives in and keeps fighting. Severin, Madeline’s river devil is one creepy little girl, every time the author describes her and what she does in the book…it gives me goosebumps! The Tangled Bridge, like the first book has chapters alternating back and forth from present day Louisiana and 1900s Louisiana.

I enjoyed this book as much as the first, although there was less mystery/action this time around. Madeleine spends most of her time protecting Marc’s baby’s location and one of the Lumen boy from Chloe/Zenon or in the briar learning to hone her power or getting Chloe/Zenon off her trail. Overall, The Tangled Bridge was a great addition to the series, and it’s as creepy and chilling as the first book. The ending leaves a possibility of the series continuing, because Marc’s child is the last of the briar children.

Madeleine LeBlanc is still learning how to hone her briar-born abilities. Zenon Lansky is in a coma now, yet this gives him the ability to always been in the briar gaining knowledge and strength. Chloe is determined to find a way to preserve and lengthen her life span, but she needs the secrets from the briar (which she can’t access directly) to do so and is poised to force one of her great-grandchildren to carry out the deed. Along with Madeleine’s current troubles, we are given entrée into the world of Chloe’s children and their fight against their mother.

I enjoyed ‘The Tangled Bridge’ even though I felt sometimes lost in the briar myself. The story jumps back and forth a lot and I couldn’t always keep up with what was past, present, and potentially future. I absolutely love the world Ms. Hawk has created and I see how the split between past and present is used to give information to readers, I only wish it had been done a little smoother. Yet truly, there is no time in the briar and everything is happening all at once. I enjoyed seeing Madeleine gain more knowledge and control over her briar-born powers and the evolving relationship between her, Ethan, and the lumens child, Bo Racer. By the ending, it’s clear the story is far from over and we’ll have to wait and see how far into the briar patch Ms. Hawk takes us next.

In A Tangled Bridge the 2nd in the series, we find out much more about Madeleine’s family, and you will get way more knowledge about the briar, pigenory and the river devils. Madeleine's river devil, Severin, is pretty crazy and disturbing if you ask me! She fights Chloe her Great-Grandmother, who keeping pushing Madeleine in using her abilities more and more and to make her walk the briar. Zenon, her half-brother, that she find out in the first book, is also trying to push her into using her abilities more and more. Both books move back and forth between present day Louisiana and 1900's Louisiana giving you a better knowledge of Madeleine's past.

I enjoyed the 2nd in this series. It was a great mystery-thriller for sure. There as so much reveals in this one and the fight Madeleine's fights to keep her self in check and the location of her brothers son is page turning. There a lot of twists and turns in this one and you will be on the edge reading it. I really like how in this series I could really not like a character, Zenon, the half-brother really crepes me out! Madeleine fears her bloodline and worries she will end up like her father with schizophrenia or great-grandmother so she looks back into past to get answers. The book is definitely intense, you for sure have to have plenty of time to get into this one. This was a great addition to this series and hope to see more. The end will leave you wanting more and thats for sure.

Today's review is on The Tangled Bridge by Rhodi Hawk

Just as good as the first installment, The Tangle Bridge was difficult to put down and took me just one day to complete. And though there were a few editing misses, I continued to be as enthralled with the story as I was from the very first page of the first book.

Now that Zenon is in a coma you would think that the danger to Madeleine, Ethan, and the Lumens would decrease, but that is not the case. Zenon has been practicing and has become quite proficient at the Pigeon Games. In fact, he may even be good enough to thwart his great-grandmother Chloe.

Chole, on the other hand is still searching for Madeleine's nephew Cooper, and will do anything to get him. Even if that means hurting Madeleine.

The story continues to weave seamlessly between the past and the present, offering valuable insight to each of the LeBlanc family members while captivating the reader with the happenings of the briar and the river devils.

Amazing twists abound in this second installment. You never know what will happen when the briar is involved. Who will be the one saving you and who will be the one chasing after you?

I hope I won't have to wait very long for the third book!

I only made it about halfway through this 528-page tome before I lost interest in its story. The premise was very interesting, and I expected it to be engrossing, at the very least. The beginning did not disappoint, with the introduction of Madeline and Ethan, and their jaunt to meet up with a possessed woman and a dead body. Following closely on its heels is an introduction to the LeBlanc children, who run from their home in the bayou to the dark and dangerous New Orleans.

The river devils, Madeline’s family dysfunction, Ethan’s wavering support, all play a part in Madeline’s slow-but-certain mental unraveling at the hands – or should I say mind games? – of her brother Zenon. And never mind her grandmother Chloe – I didn’t stay long enough to figure if she helped or hindered, and the parts I did read didn’t get around to clearing that up.

The Tangled Bridge wasn’t quite my cup of tea, but maybe it’s yours. If you’ve read it and loved it, please comment below with the link to your review.

This is the second of a series of books written by Rhodi Hawk that follows the life of Madeleine LeBlanc and her family. The story goes from present day New Orleans to the past, revealing more of the powers hidden of the underworld that are linked to the family history. Madeleine is forced to enter the bottom of the briar to discover how she can stop her great-grandmother and half brother from taking innocent people and controlling their minds and bodies. A constant battle between good and evil.

Having read both books, I found, "The Tangled Bridge" much more dark, disturbing, creepy and intense then "A Twisted Ladder." However, this book gives us more insight into the family history and we discover how Chloe(great-grandmother) uses her power to control her children and grand-children to benefit her life.

Rhodi Hawk is a very creative and talented writer and I look forward to the third book.

I was tremendously disappointed in the sequel to Rhodi Hawk's "a Twisted Ladder." I looked forward to "The Tangled Bridge" so much that I kept her first book out to remind me of the details. The first half of the sequel is spent with the "river devils" and I have not been able to get passed that. I rarely give up on a book and I have labored through many. This, however, I can't do. So sad. There is no explanation to the first time reader of any of the relationships..,just a disappointment all round. Bad. Sorry.

The Tangled Bridge by Rhodi Hawk is the second in a series. I did not realize that until I started to read it and I can tell you that it is not a stand-alone book. You really have to read The Tangled Ladder first. It tells the story of individual’s crossing over between the living and dead. I had a difficult time because there were at least three story lines going in this book. I am not even sure I know what was going on.

This is the sequel to "The Twisted Ladder." Although this is a good read, it was easy to get lost in the changing characters and times. Some new characters are in the book as well as many from the first story. I can see another book in the future! This one definitely sets the stage for the next novel.
