The year is 1889 and the San Francisco gold rush is in full swing. Seeking adventure, Duncan MacLeod, member of an age old race of immortals, sets out for the Alaskan territory. He and his friends soon find themselves trapped in a frozen hell.
"White Silence" is a fairly generic survival adventure novel with highlander seasoning. It is set during the Yukon gold rush. How much you enjoy this is going to depend entirely on how much you like man v nature plotlines.
I've read many Highlander novels. This one was so good, I read it in a day. A great story, well written and packed with history. Heartily recommended for any fan of the films and TV series.
While the author takes liberty with some of the facts of history, (explained in an afterword), this story reads so true to conditions in Alaska and the Yukon during the winter. Well written, the men, Immortals Duncan Macleod, Hugh Fitzcairn and Fitzcairn's student Danny O'Donal develop gold fever and take on the harsh countryside with two Indian guides. Excellent read!
Interesting book. Fitzcairn is one of my favourite Highlander characters, so I like getting stories with him in it. I also like that this book is entirely in flashback. Some of the best stories are flashback, I don't need the modern setting. Having immortals dealing with the isolation and harsh terrain of the Yukon is an interesting twist.
Read a while back so I don't remember a lot. But I love the Highlander movie and this book used the same characters in a different situation. I do remember enjoying it. I would recommend this one.
