Relentless: The Power You Need to Never Give Up

Rate this book
Re•lent•less (ri lent/lis): an attitude or posture that is resolute, uncompromising, persistent, unyielding, constant, unstoppable, ruthless.  The opposite of slacken, waver, or concede.

If ever there was a need for followers of Jesus to be resolute in purpose, uncompromising for truth, persistent in faith, unyielding in hope, constant in love, and unstoppable in advancing the kingdom…it’s now! God is ruthless in His love and pursuit of us; it’s time for His Bride to reflect the same passion.

John Bevere explores how people of Bible times and today became John the Baptist spent years living in a barren desert. Jesus endured hardship in a desolate wilderness of temptation. Both men emerged strong in the “power of the Spirit,” relentless in not just getting through challenges but in ruling over their circumstances. Ultimately, they succeeded in their God-given life mission.

In Relentless , you’ll learn how even seemingly impossible situations were never meant to stop you but to propel you forward in your journey. Discover in these biblically grounded truths how you can thrive no matter what your season of life.

How you begin is not nearly as important as how you finish. Embrace your trials and become relentless!

Relentless by John Bevere

John Bevere writes with passion and strong opinions. Opinions with which I find it hard to agree. He is obviously well-versed in scripture but his use of them is somewhat misleading.

One of the statements Bevere makes is that God is not in control. He asks the question “Who is in charge of the earth?” and answers, “We are!” He develops his thought with scripture references that seemed to support his theory but do not.

He believes Christians are empowered by grace to rule in life and are to be the best of the best in every way and everything. And he explains what that should look like. He seems to be saying that if a Christian is not super successful in all they do then they are a failure as a Christian. Not that they are not Christian, just not very good ones.

There are thought provoking chapters and ideas in Relentless that are compelling in the way they are presented. However, there are some conclusions that I found difficult to understand and I think he uses scripture incorrectly to defend his beliefs.

That Christians are to be relentless in their faith I understand. We are called to persevere and remain faithful and bring Christ’s message to a dying world. What is means to be relentless to me and what it means to John Bevere are altogether different.

This was a challenging book for me to read and not one I enjoyed. At times it angered me but for the most part it was frustrating. I would not recommend this book to an unbeliever or one new to the faith. To others I would suggest reading prayerfully and with a good study bible at hand.

Much of what Bevere wrote rings true but overall, for me, the clang of alarm rang loudest.

I was sent the book Relentless free of charge by WaterBrook Multnomah Publishers in exchange for this review.

John Bevere is at once both a quick read and a thoughtful read. While his phrasing and examples make his books easy to digest and he does an excellent job of breaking down deep thoughts or complex issues, he also challenges my thinking and sends me to the Bible multiple times throughout his books to confirm what he says. I love that!

While I don't say that I agree 100% with everything within this book, it is worth considering how relentless we are in our individual, daily lives in pursuing God. How much do we truly believe Him? What of that belief shows in our actions? How do we limit ourselves by not trusting in the grace He provides? This book addresses those very questions, and Mr. Bevere's examples challenge the reader to believe and act for more.

Well written reminder of the power that grace can have in the life of every believer as we choose to use this power. Develops the manner in which we work through challenges in our lives as the central method by which God grows us into the people that He created us to be. Also develops the idea that we are to rule with Christ, not just in the future, but now as we take His authority over the works of the enemy on Earth. Important encouragement to the body of Christ to be active in the world and not just passive within the walls.

I recently read Relentless by John Bevere.

One of the best parts of the book was the paragraph on the back cover:

Christians were never meant to “just get by.” You were created to rise above adversity and display greatness! In this compelling book, best-selling author John Bevere explores what it takes to finish well. More than a strategy for survival, Relentless offers you a fresh new mind-set, one that enthusiastically declares with the apostle Paul, “I delight in difficulties.” Its biblically grounded truths will equip you to flourish in every season of life.

John Bevere says, “God doesn’t author hardship but uses it to strengthen us for greater conquests. He never leads us into a storm that He doesn’t give us the power to overcome.” and he says, “You already have what it takes to finish well!”

When life is hard, it is really difficult to think about finishing well. Sometimes, it is just getting through today.

As a whole, this book was thought provoking and challenging. It was encouraging and uplifting.

I do have to say that I didn’t always agree with his wording or his interpretation of scripture. And, at times, I was concerned about the level of power he gives to people and not to God.

But, the simple message of the book is true - We do need to be relentless in our passion for Christ.

We must press on toward the goal of Heaven and push through even when life is hard.

That is something we all can be challenged with!

Bevere is one of the best modern voices in the Church. His voice is not one that seeks out Christian celebrity, but instead is one that is a constant centering voice in the Church. Because of this, I've made sure to read each of his books. And, although this book is solid and helpful for an individual who fights spiritual weariness, I would rank it near the bottom of his works. It feels like a second relative of Extraordinary, another of Bevere's books.

John Bevere, bestselling author, speaker and head of Messenger International provides readers with yet another timely book, this time on the need to persevere through hardship while maintaining a firm foundation in God’s Word. At first, Relentless had all the makings of yet another book about how God will make everything work out for the believer provided they simply have faith and a positive attitude in the midst of trials and tribulations, much akin to something from the pen of Joel Olsteen or Robert Schuller. Thankfully, John Bevere’s approach is far more biblically centric fully recognizing the situations believers will face and the necessity to not just poke along in our Christian walk but to conversely press forward through faith and trust in that through the power of God we can indeed be more than conquerors.

Relentless begins with Bevere depicting three types of individuals we all face: (1) the unbeliever who merely goes with the flow of everyday life, (2) the believer who recognizes the need to press forward in the fight against the enemy, and (3) the deceived who have the appearance of truth yet are in the end either compromisers of God’s Word or outright charlatans. The need to be relentless, according to Bevere, is based on the desire to “finish according to the desired end.” He rightly notes “There’s no escaping the adversity waiting for each of us if we follow the path of Jesus. The stakes are high and the eternal rewards priceless.”

Bevere also provides some valuable insight into the now and not yet aspect of the Kingdom of God taught by respected theologians and experts in this area such as George Eldon Ladd and others. Unfortunately, many believers seem to have the concept that the present life is something we just have to endure until we can “get to heaven.” In reality, this is not what Scripture describes. The Kingdom of God is to be experienced to some degree in the present. Some aspects of Bevere’s statements in this area may lead some to believe that in this present life we have the authority to ensure we will not endure any trials as we have been given authority to rule in this age as we will in the age to come. That is not, in the opinion of this reviewer, the conclusion Bevere is leading to. Conversely, what he is alluding to is the fact that through Christ we are more than conquerors. We have been given the ability to engage the enemy by donning the full armor of God on a daily basis in order to wage war against the enemy. As the body of Christ, this is one of our mandates.

Another valuable insight provided by Bevere is the very nature of the conflict we as believers face. He reminds us of the source of our struggle, namely the desire of Satan to steal, kill, and destroy. In an age where there are increasing amounts of tribulation in the world such as famine, clashes between nations and religious worldviews, greed, poverty, and sickness just to name a few, many seek to understand how a loving God could allow such tragedy to take place. While Bevere certainly does not undertake a scholarly overview of the problem of evil which would largely be outside the bounds of this particular book in the first place, he does remind the reader who the source of evil truly is, namely Satan. Bevere perhaps does toe the line somewhat on the prosperity issue; however, it is by no means over the top prosperity gospel teaching. Instead he reminds his reader that to have financial prosperity is not sinful, what is sinful is allowing the pursuit of money or prosperity to become lord in your life.

One of the final areas of importance covered by Bevere is the need to be vigilant. One of the major ways to maintain an attitude of vigilance is through prayer, an area of the Christian walk arguably largely neglected by most believers. Bevere reminds us of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane when he urged the disciples to “watch with me” through prayer. Throughout the gospels it must be noticed that Jesus spent a great deal of time in prayer. In Luke 18:1, Jesus exhorts that “Men ought always to pray, and not to faint.” In an age when the spiritual conflict we face is increasingly heated, the method by which we must press on must be oriented in maintaining spiritual vigilance through an active prayer life.

Overall, Relentless by John Bevere is a well-written, biblically centric, call to arms. There are those without and even unfortunately within the evangelical community who seek to lure believers into compromise in an effort to make the gospel more amenable to the masses. We must resist such efforts to water down God’s word as this is simply yet another attempt by Satan to steal, kill, and destroy. The enemy is fierce; however, greater is He that is in us than he that is in the world. Let us daily remind each other to heed the words of Hebrews 12:1: “Let us run with patient endurance and steady and active persistence the appointed course of the race that is set before us.” (AMP)

Excellent

This book by John Bevere is excellent because it shows the value of being relentless, but it does so by using imagery that resonates with ordinary life. His examples from his own life and those of others make the reader understand concepts associated with being relentless. His method is not what I expected, but the message is clear!

My mother recommended this book to me and I'm glad I read it. This is the first Christian lit book I've read as an adult and it was both easy to understand and interesting. The main message about God's grace and the power and authority we have through it to rule in our lives was eye opening and it give me a new hopeful perspective on life and its challenges. I would definitely consider reading more Christian lit and specifically John Bevere's books in the future.

John Bevere in his new book, “Relentless” published by Waterbrook Press tells us about The Power You Need to Never Give Up.

From the inside jacket flap: Re•lent•less (ri lent/lis): an attitude or posture that is resolute, uncompromising, persistent, unyielding, constant, unstoppable, ruthless.

John Bevere explores how people of Bible times and today became relentless: John the Baptist spent years living in a barren desert. Jesus endured hardship in a desolate wilderness of temptation. Both men emerged strong in the “power of the Spirit,” relentless in not just getting through challenges but in ruling over their circumstances. Ultimately, they succeeded in their God-given life mission.

In Relentless, you’ll learn how even seemingly impossible situations were never meant to stop you but to propel you forward in your journey. Discover in these biblically grounded truths how you can thrive no matter what your season of life.

How you begin is not nearly as important as how you finish. Embrace your trials and become relentless!

Psalm 34, verse 19 tells us, “Many are the afflictions of the righteous, But the LORD delivers him out of them all. It is not that we are not going to have trouble, we are, what is going to happen is that we are going to make it through the trouble by the power of God. That simply means that when trouble comes against we must stand against it, not cave in to it or turn around and walk away. John Bevere tells us how we should have a walk in God that is relentless no matter what comes against us. He shows us in events from his own life and events from the lives of those in the Bible how they were able to stand in the face of the enemy and overcome him. “Relentless” is not a book that you will read once and then pack away. It is a book that will impact you on the first read and change you and then continue to change you with each subsequent re-read. It is that good! I recommend it highly!

What does it mean to be relentless? The term describes an attitude or posture that is resolute, persistent and unyielding. ... Whether for the short-term or the long-term, a relentless heart is in it to finish according to the desired end. Nothing will deter him or her from the completed goal.

I give this book 4 ½ stars. I think it's amazing in so many ways.

I feel that I got a new understanding for what the grace of God entails by reading this book. And also about what it means to be relentless and finishing well and how this is connected with the grace of God. I love when I can see and learn new things about God and about being a Christian. To read about the empowerment through grace felt new to me and also something that's very important and amazing to read about. The grace of God doesn't just give us salvation and forgiveness from our sins. It also gives us the strength and power we need to rule in life and complete our goals. God's grace makes us distinguished in a way that separates us from the world, and all we need to do is to follow him and live for him. I love the stories that is told in chapter five that deals specifically with being distinguished. It's both biblical stories about Daniel and modern day examples that inspires me to want to be distinguished and by being that giving glory to God.

There's simply so much good stuff in this book, but I won't go in to everything in this review, though. But I will say that you'll learn things like resisting the devil, praying relentlessly and finishing the race strongly.

I also want to say that I love the way John Bevere writes. He does it in a way that draws me in and captures me. And what's so awesome about this is that he does this through the grace of God. In this book he tells us about how English was not something he was very good at in school, so that he would become a writer and sell millions of books was all God. I previously read Driven by Eternity: Making Your Life Count Today & Forever by him which I loved and plan to read more books by him in the future.

And last but not least, I just need to say that the cover to this book is so beautiful. I love it.

”You already have what it takes to finish well!” declares John Bevere in his latest book, Relentless. So many times as Christians we let the day go by us, living to just get by, to get through each day, through Relentless, Bevere reminds us that we are not meant to ‘just get by.’ That are goal is not just to finish, but to finish well! We have been equipped with the tools to take control of our situation through the grace of God and to live relentlessly for Him.
Bevere challenges us to take a stand and to declare the promises of God over every situation. Relentless is jam packed with information which at times became overwhelming with all the information squeezed into a single chapter. Bevere uses biblical truth in support of what he is asking us to do, to live relentlessly for God. The level of conversation within the book digs deep into the ancient greek roots of words and bible translations, Bevere has done his research on the topic as he shares stories and examples of what a life living relentlessly could look like.

There are some points within this book that I do not agree with, but for the most part I enjoyed the information and had a lot to think about. At times the chapters are daunting and are so packed full of information it is hard to process everything. This is not a book to read over a weekend, it is a book that needs time and consideration and be prepared to take notes! By the end of this book you will be ready to stand tall and strong and by becoming Relentless in our faith “we will become something to be reckoned with, a genuine threat to the kingdom of darkness.”

I received this book complimentary from Waterbrook Press through the blogging for books program in exchange for an honest review. All opinions and thoughts are my own.
