Before delving into another Helen Grace novel, there stands this short story that packs a punch and offers series fans a look into the early police days of the protagonist. M.J. Arlidge pulls readers back in time once again with this story, which might help show how DCI Helen Grace became such a detail-oriented copper! A man runs through a forested area, dogs chasing after him, and his level of panic increasing. The man is not paying attention when he is struck by a lorry on a fairly busy thoroughfare, causing traffic tie-ups and significant headaches for the local constabulary. A fresh recruit from police training, WPC (Women Police Constable) Helen Grace is rotating through the Traffic Division of the Hampshire Police and attends the scene, taking note of the accident and the state of the victim, who has no identification whatsoever. Discovering her inner sleuth, Grace interacts with the morgue and convinces the pathologist to undertake an autopsy, which reveals some interesting findings. Grace also learns that there is nowhere from which this man could have come, save a small piece of property on the other side of the wooded area. It is a small poultry farm, which soon reveals that the owner has been hiring recent immigrants to complete the arduous tasks. Highly agitated by the arrival of any police presence, Gary Raynor rebuffs many of the questions being asked, but Grace is able to ascertain the identity of the man from one of the other farmhands, Addisu Tesfaye. Working on her off-hours, Grace learns that Addisu was riddled with a form of tuberculosis and that he likely arrived on the shores of England in a less than majestic fashion. Returning to the farm, Grace makes a horrible realisation that will shape how a simple accident investigation may turn into a full-blown major police incident. While her superiors curse Grace and her lack of sticking to the rules, she is lauded for having used her gumption to open up what might be a massive investigation. Definitely a short story/novella, but Arlidge packs a major punch in this story, perfect for series fans or those wanting to learn a little more about Helen Grace before taking the major investment into reading the collection of novels.
I stumbled upon Helen Grace last summer (has it been that long?) and devoured the entire collection up to that point. Reading all the novels that Arlidge had penned and adding some of the short stories that he placed within the series to better shape the Helen Grace character, I soon became addicted and have been waiting for some fresh material. Those who have been on the long journey with Helen Grace will know that she is not one to ‘colour in the lines’, but this story might be the perfect piece of foundation to show where that initiated. Not yet her gritty self, Grace is learning to bend the rules to benefit those who have died, rather than always follow the guidance of her superiors. While there are some periphery characters, the length of the story and the intended focus made Grace the front and centre character to develop. The story flows wonderfully with those short chapters, crisp and leading, for which Arlidge is well known. Even the topic is quite poignant, though is was likely just as popular in 1993, when the story is set. There are wonderful nuances and literary breadcrumbs offered in the piece, giving it the throwback feel that leave the reader feeling they are back in time with the young and still impressionable WPC Helen Grace, who grew into being a maverick who would not rest until the guilty were caught. I had a niggling feeling that I had read this story before. I remembered a number of the opening chapters and scene developments, but I could not find any record of having reviewed them. Now, either the cyber book police found a review I made on a leaked story and erased it, or I became so ensconced in the Helen Grace series that I felt I must have read this piece and crafted the story in one of my dreams. Either way, Helen Grace is back. I am a happy reader and it is time for a full-length novel to keep my heart rate up!
Kudos, Mr. Arlidge for a wonderful piece that taps into those early Helen Grace years. This suits your series fans well, as we are always looking to better understand Helen and some of the ideas you have bouncing around in your head. Keep up the high-calibre writing.

This is a good, solid short story, about one of my favourite detectives. Set back in the days, when she was a probationary WPC. Can you imagine any one trying to tell her what to do? It gives a fantastic insight into her character and skills, she is a natural detective. I also loved the other novella about her early life. Very quick read, but well worth it.

Heel interessant om de jonge Helen Grace in actie te zien en waar haar carrière begonnen is! Het is kort maar krachtig en spannend. Zeker een heel goede novelle!

Another fantastic read from M J Arlidge in the form of a novella.
In this book we meet a young Helen Grace, a young WPC who is on probation in the Southampton police force. Grace is working in traffic and is loving it as she’s out on the roads of Southampton on a motorbike - her favourite mode of transport. Responding to a RTA on the A36 leads to a huge police operation, initiated by her determination to get justice.
The short chapters make this series of books so easy to read where that whole “just one more chapter” really means just a few more chapters! If you love the Helen Grace series then this a must read for you - the start of the story of the fantastic police officer that Grace has become.

Een leuk verhaal voor tussendoor. Dit verhaal gaat over de jonge Helen Grace. Het was niet zo spannend als de gewone delen, maar wel leuk om te lezen. Het is deel 6,5. Je kunt het boek echter wel eerder lezen, want er zitten geen verwijzingen in naar de andere delen.

En ik ging nog even door met Helen Grace. In Schuitje Varen ga je terug in de tijd. Terug naar de tijd dat Helen 18 is en nog bij de verkeerspolitie zit. Waarom zit ze daar? Omdat je dan mag motorrijden ;-). Na een verkeersongeluk is zij er van overtuigd dat het slachtoffer niet zomaar is gevallen. Hij heeft namelijk geen schoenen en sokken aan. Ze is vast besloten om de echte oorzaak van dit drama te achterhalen.
Hij draaide zich om, maar kon zich er niet van weerhouden een laatste opmerking te maken. ‘Ik voorzie een grote toekomst voor jou.’
In één ruk uitgelezen, dit 126 pagina’s korte boekje. Goed in de stijl van de andere boeken, maar minder diepgaand. Wat best logisch is in zo’n klein boekje. Ook in dit deel zag ik de dader niet aankomen… Het is wel aan te raden dit boekje te lezen nadat je de eerste twee delen in de serie hebt gelezen. Anders lees je spoilers en dat willen we natuurlijk niet. 4 sterren.

Tweede korte verhaal nu gelezen. Ik ga de rest van deze serie ook zeker lezen! De hoofdstukken zijn niet lang en het leest erg fijn en gemakkelijk! Ben nu al benieuwd naar de volgende zaak van Helen Grace! ;-)

A little bit of insight on Helens start of her career. We could see she was meant to be a good police officer from the beginning. Although I knew all along who the bad guy is I enjoyed reading it.

Ik heb echt heel lang iene mine matte liggen maar door de hele hype durfde ik niet te beginnen want stel dat het tegenvalt. En toen ineens zag ik dit korte verhaal in de 2e hands winkel en dacht ik die moet mee want het helpt misschien om de stap te zetten om te beginnen. En dat is gelukt want zo lang heb ik hem nog niet in huis. Het leest heerlijk weg heeft de nodige spanning maar niet te. Het is een voelbare spanning die blijft door het hele boek heen. Had ik dit verwacht nee want ik was juist heel erg bang dat het zou tegenvallen, maat blij dat ik ben begonnen zodat ik nu de andere ook kan lezen.

I'm not a huge fan of short stories but I have read all of the books published in the Helen Grace series, including the previous shorts so I had to give this one a go too. It was a good, solid short story and I did enjoy it. The book goes back to the start of Helen's career when she was still in her training and gives you a bit of insight in to her character and how she has been since she first signed up. 4 stars from me, I do prefer the full length books in the series.

This short-story is another prequel to the Helen Grace Series and goes back to the novice days of Helen, just graduated from police school. She starts at the bottom of the social ladder, gets her first assignments as a member of traffic police, and has to deal with being a female in a typical men's world. Yet she is assertive and witty enough to survive in this atmosphere, having the guts to follow her own intuition in the pursuit of a case. The story is well-written as usual, maybe not as gripping as the sequels, but still, an enjoyable read.

Helen Grace is 18 jaar oud en loopt stage bij de verkeerspolitie. In die hoedanigheid treft ze een zojuist aangereden jonge Afrikaanse man op de weg aan. Wie is hij en waar komt hij vandaan? Wat deed hij zonder sokken en schoenen en met wonden aan zijn enkels op de snelweg? Hoewel Helen eigenlijk haar werkzaamheden tot verkeerszaken moet beperken gaat ze toch op eigen houtje op onderzoek uit, zeer tegen de zin van haar meerderen.
Best een aardig verhaal met een zeer toegankelijke schrijfstijl. Minder diepgang dan in de boeken, zowel qua inhoud (het verhaal leek af en toe wel kort samengevat) als in de schrijfstijl. En de beloofde inkijk in het verleden van Helen Grace? Die heb ik niet gevonden, althans niet in haar persoonlijke verleden. Wel heeft het verhaal een onverwachte ontknoping.

I'm already a huge fan of M.J.Arlidge and the DI Helen Grace books. And this novella had passed me by when it was first released, so I'm p!eased to have now read it and consider myself fully up to date on all the Helen Grace books.
This novella is set back when Helen Grace was a young WPC, new to the force. And her first big case, despite being a probationary traffic cop.

In dit kleine boekje van Arlidge, krijgen we Helen Grace te zien op haar 18e wanneer ze bij de verkeerspolitie stage loopt. Het is een kort en krachtig boekje maar inhoudelijk niet zo diep als zijn andere boeken. In het begin raakte ik niet geboeid door het boek. Naar het einde toe wel en voelde ik meer die Arlidge vibe die ik van hem gewoon ben.
Een drietal sterren.. Niet slecht, niet bijster top.
