At the heart of why hazing persists, and why it has been so difficult to meaningfully prevent, is that we still know so little about it. Just a handful of disciplinary approaches and theoretical perspectives have circumscribed our understanding of hazing. Paradigm Rethinking the Persistence of Hazing greatly expands our understanding of what undergirds and propels hazing (1) considering the individual, interpersonal, organizational, and community dynamics that influence it; (2) distilling the accessible empirical research on the topic; (3) incorporating the range of untested theories that have been used to understand hazing; (4) harnessing a broader range of empirically-tested theories, in an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approach, to add more nuance to our understanding of hazing; and (5) offering an integrated, big-picture analysis of how and why hazing persists. Ultimately, this approach greatly expands how we think about hazing and offers new and more fruitful paths for solutions.
"This book is an excellent resource for individuals, organizations and institutions seeking to understand the complex dynamics that drive hazing in order to create evidence-informed prevention strategies. Dr. Parks’ meticulous documentation of the multitude of psychological and social factors that perpetuate hazing gives the reader a more complete view of the myriad reasons hazing becomes an entrenched behavior that requires a holistic, comprehensive prevention approach." – Susie Bruce, M.Ed., Director, Gordie Center, University of Virginia
"One of the reasons I believe we have failed to adequately address the issue of hazing is we often fail to understand how complex and nuanced it is. Professor Parks offers a thoughtful, well-defined, and nuanced perspective related to this issue. I trust that this book will be a valuable resource for students, parents, practitioners, researchers, and leaders within the fraternal industry and beyond." – Chris Graham, past national President, Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors
"Paradigm Shift deepens our understanding of hazing and hazing reform. It is important for both parents and students to read!" – Rae Ann Gruver, mother and hazing prevention advocate
"Professor Parks has taken on his most ambitious study. He has recounted his own research and cited the best history and science of other researchers to tackle a truly comprehensive “Big Picture” work of scholarship. His emphasis on good leadership and the ill effects of bad leadership at national and chapter levels is particularly illuminating. It is a work that ought to gather no dust in the bookshelves of Greek national leaders and student life administrators alike." – Hank Nuwer, editor of Destroying Young Lives ; author of Wrongs of Fraternities, Sororities, Hazing, and Binge Drinking
"My son, Harrison, lost his life in a fraternity hazing incident at the age of 19. I wish I had Paradigm Shift available to me when he went to college. This book is a valuable resource for parents of students from junior high school through college." – Lianne Kowiak, mother and hazing prevention advocate
"To prevent and address hazing, we must first understand why it exists and persists despite its widely known negative impact. Paradigm Shift offers a robust analysis about why individuals engage in hazing, why leaders overlook it, and why activists have struggled to eradicate it." – Jessica A. Mertz, Executive Director, Clery Center
