Ozark Folksongs, Vol. 2

Rate this book
The excellent introductions and indexes, the striking photographs of the informants, and the solid scholarly foundation make this, as McNeil states, "one of America's most important folksong collections."

Four massive volumes of some of the best folklore songs ever printed. The author did not confine himself only to collecting Child ballads, as so many collectors seem to do. No, he collected everything: minstrel songs, snake-oil show songs, play-party songs, weepy parlor songs, hokey sentimental stuff from the world of popular entertainment, local murder ballads, moral and religious songs, you name it. Each song has its history: informant's name, place, date, and when and where they learned it. All cross-referenced to similar songs in other publications. This entire collection took me ages to read, absorb, and sing through. Altogether too impressive for words.
