If your deepest desires spontaneously manifested into reality, giving you powers and abilities once limited to your dreams, what would you do?

Donovan Cole hates his life: his body, his job, his relationship…until one night a violent confrontation outside a nightclub causes him to change – instantly infusing him with almost supernatural size and strength.

The transformation is only temporary, and before long he realizes that he’s not the only one; people around the world have been manifesting at random, able to bend the laws of physics that govern our universe…but they’re rarely seen or heard from again.

Who, or what, is causing them to disappear? What’s the trigger that causes someone to change? And is it arbitrary when someone manifests their powers?

Cole is drawn to a beautiful but troubled girl named Dia who is looking for similar answers, but has a solution to the unreliable nature of their unstable powers: an experimental drug known as ‘Muse’ that enables the user to trigger their abilities and transform at will.

Battling a powerful and mysterious faction known as The Collectors – as well as their own addictions – Dia, Cole, and a small group of friends race against time to unravel the secrets of their uncanny abilities…but they may not live long enough to find out.

I think this was a book that really had a chance to be good. The concept was interesting and the plot was fun, but when it comes down to it, there were issues I couldn't get past. The world created breaks its own rules often. The writing is loose and cliches appear far too often. The characters aren't consistent with themselves and there is a feeling that the story grew out of the plots needs rather than organically. I enjoy Northcott's blog and I think this series has potential. I think a lot of the issues I had were just inexperience in novel writing. The series really needs a harsh experienced editor who can help bring the writing up to the level of the concept.

Okay, so, Vs. Reality was strange. Not sure how I decided to jump into this after 4 holiday books but whatever. I did it. The characters, world, and plot were a bit much for my tired brain to fully understand. I got some of it but the entire picture that I think was being shown to me. Maybe the sequel will help me out because the idea was pretty interesting.

It also ended up being a quick book to devour. We kind of jump into action pretty early on and it doesn't really stop there either. Then there's the pace, which was okay, but I think I had to slow down so many times because I wasn't fully understanding everything. Which is why I'm hoping I get more information or explanations in the next one.

In the end, I'm happy that I got to dive into this. It had potential to be a little bit better in my eyes and I hope that it did so in the future books.

The concept is interesting.

People around the world are developing powers that could threaten the fate of the entire world. A group of cast-offs have developed a way to give 'potentials' a chance at that power with the pop of a pill.

The characters are fun, the action fast and the story is light. Don't let the three-star rating put you off, those interested in comic-books and superheroes - this could easily be a 4. I was expecting a little more description regarding the world and I would have liked a little more background on some of the supporting characters, but I think the author might touch on those in the next installment. If this was a comic/graphic novel it would have been a 4 all the way. I really would like to see this as a graphic novel, I think the story would work better in that format.

An excellent book. The characters were good and the dialog was natural. The arc of the book is great in that you care what happens but the outcome was not obvious. A fun read indeed.

My main issue would have been that as a Canadian author, she should have taken advantage of her first-hand knowledge and had the story center around Toronto, not New York. At times, her view as an outsider was readily apparent. Having spent many summers in the TO area, the wealth of untapped settings is just begging to be the focus of some sort of wonderful sci-fi story.

UPDATE: after reading the second volume, Relapse, as a whole, I am now totally blown away. Wow, wow, wow.

I am being totally honest when i say great concept bad wording, editing, and sadly even passion. every person was described in measurements as if she was stating facts, as if she was a doctor making a daily check up. I wanted to hear her say lanky or small and thin not 5'4 and 120 pounds. Then there were so many editing errors i had to guess and think of what she meant. Lastly she sounded disconnected and unattached. oh but good concept and idea.

What would you do if you suddenly became the ideal version of yourself?

That's the question 27 year old Donovan Cole has to answer in Blake Northcott's Vs. Reality .

Donovan is a mixed martial arts fighter, or actually more like an ex-mixed martial arts fighter. He was undefeated until one loss seriously messed up his head. Now he's not so much fighting as taking beatings regularly in hopes of gaining his confidence back, his fighting spirit.

Then he meets Dia Davenport.

Ten minutes with her and he's being attacked in a back alley by a couple of shady men who mean business. With no way out and Dia to protect, Donovan does the impossible. He transforms from his normal lean, wiry build into a man comparable in size to the Hulk. Suddenly he's the guy he always wanted to be, always thought he could be. And he's more powerful than he could have ever imagined.

But he's not the only one.

Dia also transforms, creating a portal in thin air and transports them back to the safety of her penthouse apartment.

Soon Dia's introducing Donovan to some of her friends and guess what? Yeah, they all have unbelievable powers, same as Donovan. Dia can rip holes in space and time. Her sister, Paige, can melt metal into a puddle. And the lovable stoner/genius roommate, Brodie, has telekinesis. And they all use little blue pills called Muse to manifest these abilities whenever they want.

On top of finding out that there are humans out there with superpowers, Donovan also discovers that there is an entire agency called the Basement out to get people like him. People who can manifest are dangerous, or so they say, and must be vaccinated to make them normal again. But the Basement isn't exactly what they claim and Donovan will do anything in his power to stop them.

With a little help from his new friends, and his new ability, he might just have enough power to actually succeed.

I'm not going to lie, the first couple chapters of this book didn't catch my attention. They were beautifully written, I felt as if I were reading a comic book. I pictured each new paragraph as an illustration. But I was slightly confused, because the book opens, not with the main character, but with the bad guys. What interesting bad guys they are, but nothing was explained. I was thrown right into the action and had no idea what was going on. And when we do finally meet the main character in Chapter 2 it's in a dream. It's not the real Donovan Cole, but his ideal version of himself.

Personally, I like the real Donovan Cole much better. Once I reached Chapter 3 I was officially hooked. Donovan is a sweet guy who just wants to be the best at what he does. He takes beating after beating in the ring just hoping he'll one day be that guy he yearns to be.

Then there's Dia. She was awesome from the first moment she showed up in Donovan's life. She's a badass chick with some really cool superpowers. Who doesn't love a girl like that? She just wants to live her life and protect her sister from The Basement. She wants freedom, but freedom to Dia means something else entirely considering she can tear a hole in space and basically go wherever she wants whenever she wants.

But with all great power comes consequences. And Donovan, Dia and the rest are no exception. Whenever they manifest it's like an adrenaline rush. A high that they just can't quit. The more they manifest the harder it becomes to do it again, so they need to do more to make it happen. They're addicted.

I have to say that Jens, Donovan's (completely normal) best friend, was my favorite character. He was like the hilarious side kick who gets caught up in this situation that's so out of his league and comes along for the ride anyway. He cracked me up whenever he was around.

Northcott's writing style intrigued me. I don't read comics and have only read a few graphic novels, so I'm not used to their format, but I felt like I was reading one. I could picture every scene, every movement, like it was laid out in panels on a page in front of me. Towards the end of the book, when the story really got going, I started thinking that Vs. Reality would probably make a really great action movie. Something along the lines of all the superhero movies that have come out over the past few years. I felt it would translate perfectly onto the big screen.

The only real criticism I have is that the story was short so there wasn't much time to get really in-depth with the characters. But there is a sequel coming soon that I'm hoping will give us some more insight into their lives before and after everything that happened in the first book.

Once I got into it, Vs. Reality was a really good read. It was fast paced and filled with action. If your squeamish about blood and gore you might want to pass on this one though. There are some serious action movie scenes in here (ex. smashing a guys skull into a brick wall in the first chapter) and it's not for the faint of heart. But if you love comic books and/or superheroes you will love Vs. Reality.

So, this was kind of a strange book for me. I liked it but the story line was a little much. If people "manifest" their innermost desires, they can become that person. A drug called "Muse" is used to help achieve the effect. The Government, the New World Order, is after the drug manufacturer. But not all is as it seems.

I thought the book was good, I probably would have given it 2 1/2 stars if we had the 1/2 star thing. But I did finish the book and some of the lines were really good.

Set in an alternate timeline, Vs. Reality is the story of a group of young people with extra special powers on the run from a super secret organization looking to capture them because they have extra special powers. Though it may sound like every comic book that has ever been released since the days of Stan Lee, Vs. Reality actually has a little something that makes it different; heart.

I know, that sounds cheesy, but it’s true. You can tell that Blake Northcott put a lot of heart into her characters. And why shouldn’t she? Vs. Reality is her first novel, so it’s obvious that each of her characters is special to her. Donovan Cole, the down on his luck MMA fighter is exhibited superbly as the wannabe hero who accepts his destiny right off the bat. Dia Davenport is the beautiful yet fractured heroine who would rather live a life of running and stealing to survive than stand up to her pursuers and actually have a life. Govinda, the mysterious master-of-puppets out to capture Donovan and Dia. Nearly every scene with these characters is enjoyable and fun to read. Unfortunately, not all of them worked out so well. Many of the book’s supporting cast come off as bland and 2-dimensional, becoming less like characters and more like plot devices. Which is fine, in my opnion. Not all characters should be given the same spotlight, but I would have liked to see a little more, especially from the more important supporting characters.

The premise behind the story is good; yes, these people have extra special powers, but not all the time. They require a rush of adrenaline to access those powers, what Blake calls “manifesting”, and once that rush fades, the powers go with it. A neat little concept for a book about super heroes, I think.

Blake’s writing in Vs. Reality is a little flat. I’m not saying that Blake can’t write; if you’ve ever been to her website, www.blakenorthcott.com, it’s obvious that she is an excellent writer. But her prose comes off as stoic, which, again, makes since for her first novel. She is trying to convey her story in such a succinct and understandable way that she style has gotten lost. My hope is that for future novels, which luckily there will be for Vs. Reality, Blake decides to relax a little and let some of her own voice shine through.

All in all, Vs. Reality is a great read from a new writer. I admire Blake’s determination to write, edit, and publish her own novel, as well as her hard-work in marketing it herself. She has created an excellent product which is worthy of the attention it gets. I know that I’m in for the sequel.

I loved this book! Blake Northcott's Vs. Reality is like nothing I've read before. Ms. Northcott's debut novel is a fast, easy read with an inspired plot, fascinating characters, outstanding dialogue, and intricate details. It makes one wonder--where has Blake been hiding all this time?

The plot revolves primarily around Donovan Cole, Dia Davenport, and the manifestation of various superpowers. Sometimes these manifestations are `triggered' under duress, other times that have to be kick-started with a drug called Muse. Other characters include Dia's sister, Paige, and my personal favorites--Brodie and Jens. Then there are the three evil men out to `collect' the good guys.

If you're looking for action and humor, this is THE book to read. There's a point in the beginning when Donovan has won a UFC type fight and begins thanking his pool boy and the guy that cleans his Ferrari. Ms. Northcott's observations on human behavior is also worth noting. For example: A lot of people act a certain way at a bar or nightclub that's slightly out of character; they become willing participants in a form of theatre where they portray someone who's a cooler, sexier, smarter version of themselves - someone who's generally more attractive to the opposite sex.

Then there are the times when the dialogue is truly inspired, often reminding me of a Tarantino script: She sits up straighter in her chair, eyes widening with interest. "Wow, this isn't the typically boring, getting-to-know-you chit-chat, now is it? This is actually interesting. Don't hold out on me, cowboy, let's hear some juicy details."
One of Blake's strongest assets is her imagery style. For example: He tastes the coppery acid of his own blood dripping down the back of his tongue, filling his throat.

The story also offers commentary on various social issues such as drugs and addiction. The best authors include underlying themes within their stories, such as Stephen King's The Shining (alcoholism). Blake Northcott should count herself in good company. There's also a nice twist at the end I never saw coming, setting the story up perfectly for a sequel (which is due out soon).

To sum up: GET THIS BOOK!

Vs. Reality well deserves the numerous 5 star reviews it's garnered.

"I'm going to die. Right here, right now."

DUDE. First freaking line!!! Right? First, we are witness to the near attack of a woman, who is "saved" by Goto and Mr. Heinreich only to have THEM turn around and abduct- I mean take her in for 'processing' and take her to 'The Basement'.

Then we meet Marcus Mitchell as he gets the crap kicked out of him inside The Octagon (extreme fighting) and then his coach telling him he's lost whatever it was that used to make him great... I'm assuming it's this Kimberly chick they keep mentioning! After the fight his best friend, Jens appears in an attempt to cheer him up,

"Jens is now smiling from ear to ear - the type of smile that usually signals to Donovan that there is a distinct possibility that they'll be running from the police at some point in the evening.

"I'm not in the mood to play Halo and do bong hits in your dad's basement, but I appreciate the offer."

Jens takes him to a high end night club, and it's there that Donovan meets Dia. Everything's going great until she spots Heinriech in the crowd and suggests they leave immediately... Except out in the parking lot they run in to Goto who appears to have been waiting on them! And here is where it gets wicked exciting!

I can't get into the plot without giving it all away, but I was totally impressed! There were certain aspects that weren't quite "for me" but that's neither here nor there- because Vs. Reality was fast paced and exciting, risky and had wicked awesome characters!

Vs. Reality is a must read for any action/adventure fan with a taste for Sci-Fi/fantasy! Complete with a twist at the end that leaves you totally wishing for the next book!!

Kick-Ass on Steroids!

It may sound like the perfect way to cap off a romantic evening, but the little blue pill in Vs. Reality causes an entirely different sort of explosion. Side effects may include super-human strength, Pantene-perfect hair, glowing eyeballs, and the inadvertent destruction of those around you.

After a fight outside a night club almost kills him, Donovan Cole manifests superhuman strength and discovers he's one of a few humans who can activate super abilities by taking an experimental drug known as Muse. I'm all about that. Ever since seeing Limitless, I'm willing to try anything to crank my IQ up out of the double-digits.

Unfortunately for Donovan, a powerful organization called the Collectors is out to kidnap, experiment on, and ultimately erase people like him. His future boils down to a choice: Use his powers to run, or stay and fight? Personally, I'd hunt down Wonder Woman and join the mile-high club on her invisible jet.

The action in Vs. Reality flows so seamlessly that you can hear the music soundtrack playing in your head--at least I did because I think life should be a musical. From the opening sequence to the final chapter, events sweep Donovan Cole from failed ultimate fighter to possible savior of the world. The action sequences are tense, and due to the nature of the heroes involved, you never quite know what's going to happen next.

VsReality IS Kick-Ass on steroids. If you enjoyed that movie, you'll love this book. It's like tossing comic books and action novels into a Vitamix blender and enjoying a luscious, yet nutritious treat!

I give Vs. Reality 5/5 little blue pills.

Vs. Reality is a book that pushes the boundaries with regards to manipulating the environment and humans. All around the world people are manifesting into what they consider to be their better selves, becoming like their own superhero using powers that they manifest into their being.

Trying to contain and control this phenomenon are The Collectors. They round up people with the ability to manifest and take them to The Basement where they are never seen or heard from again.

Dia, Brodie and Paige are three individuals who have been manifesting for years. Brodie has used his skills to develop a blue pill known as “Muse” that enhances and brings on the manifestation. Take too much and you soon become addicted and reliant on the pill to manifest.

When Donovan Cole becomes involves with this group of people, he soon discovers his own power and he finds himself caught up in a world that until now, never knew existed. All he knows is that he and his new friends are in danger and he has to help save them as well as the lost people in The Basement.

It took me a few chapters to get into Vs. Reality but when I did, I was hooked. This is a quick read that once it gets going is very good and action packed. This is a fun début novel and I'm definitely looking forward to the sequel, if only to find out what happens to super quartet.

It surprised me to discover that amongst my various reviews, story pimping and other endorsements of Vs.Reality, I had failed to provide an opinion on here.
Sorry Blake! Mea culpa.

Anyway, anyone who hasn't read it yet? You really should. I won't rehash the synopsis, but what I will say is that it's fun, fast-paced, there's superpowers, violence and it has a distinct comic-book air that should lend itself well to the upcoming movie/graphic novel adaptations.
More than that, the characterisations and dialogue are excellent. Our author does them very well and you can really engage with the cast right from the outset. It doesn't have unnecessary preamble before getting into the good stuff.

On it's own it's a compact and tidy story, but with Volume 2 due out in the not-too-distant future, it also sets up the next book nicely, and if it turns out to be anything like this one, it will definitely be worth the investment.
Come on, a Pound or two. A couple of Dollars? If that? (Not to mention various other currencies)
It is worth it.
And none of this nonsense about not having a Kindle. There are plenty of Kindle readers and whatnot for other devices. ;) Go onnnn. Try it.

Big fun from Blake Northcott...I can't wait to start Book 2!

Vs. Reality is a superhero adventure in an alternate version of our world. The story takes place in the present day New York City. However, there are some very different things happening in the current events and politics arena.

This could almost be considered a dystopian story. Each thing we learn of the world around the main characters reveals another level of oppression and suppression of the individuals living in their world.

As for the characters and powers, I was impressed with the new way to introduce powers. Unfortunately there was some resemblance to the Heroes TV series in some places...but this was a minor thing to me.

One odd thing that I did not care for at first was the use of present tense in the narration. After I became accustomed to that format it really grew on me. I am now convinced that the present tense is the way to go for stories that include super hero characters. It adds to the feel that I am reading a text version of a graphic novel. It keeps action in the forefront of the story

This was a quick, fun read. Nothing too different and not anyone's idea of a masterpiece, but it is definitely a solid first outing for Blake Northcott. I am looking forward to more from her in the future.

RE: a watershed novel

Blake Northcott's debut novel -- "vs Reality" -- contains a character who uses the word 'watershed' often and often in the wrong context. However, calling Blake's first installment in a planned 3-part series a watershed novel is not only the correct usage of the word, but apropos. Having said that, I usually utilize the word 'conceit' when I come across original ideas in any medium -- books, comics, films, etc. And the conceit of Blake's novel is what makes "vs Reality" something to be read, because within the superhero genre, it's difficult these days to arrive at a truly watershed concept. Within the chapters of "vs Reality" Blake accomplishes that and more. Her conceit of a new generation of pill-popping heroes might seem bleak until you realize it's the pills that grant these heroes their powers and, in turn, infuses her story with a page-turning wow effect that leaves you, well, addicted. I cannot wait to see where Blake takes the story and her characters in Parts 2 & 3. It looks like it will be a conceit-filled ride. So what are you waiting for? -- hop aboard already.

I usually don't give star reviews, but since GR seems to require it, here it is.

This book was an interesting read. I really enjoyed Cole as a character. I felt everything he went through really showed him as being well rounded and I was rooting for him throughout the book. He was a great main character. The other characters I was a little iffy about. They all sort of seemed like bad people and often I wondered if Cole was actually on the right side or not. I did felt like there needed to be more, but it's part of a series, so I'm sure there will be.

Plan B was awesome! The ending really was great and I feel that the second book is really going to raise the stakes. There were a few things that threw me in the book. The present tense, but I got used to that after a while. The other thing was the first chapter. It wasn't the strongest chapter and was sort of jumpy. But after that the story moves along nicely.

All in all, I'm looking forward to seeing what happens with Cole as the series progresses.

I'm a big comic book fan and follow the author of this book on Twitter so of course I spent $1 to support her. Overall, I enjoyed the book and will definitely buy the next part of the series. Blake has a straightforward writing style that manages to effortlessly blend violence and humor, often in the same paragraph. I know nothing of MMA; although I was once at a bar and tried to watch it but one of the fighters had a condom advertisement on the butt of his tiny shorts and appeared to be hump/hugging his opponent and I have the maturity of a 12 year old). So I feel it is unfair to comment on that aspect of the story but the action was intense and well written. An enjoyable read from someone that took her interests and managed to sew them together into an intriguing and fairly original take on the stale genre of discovering power and the consequences thereof.

Blake Northcott has created a slam-bang action story that rips and roars along, leaving you breathless. Try to keep up, because it's a fast, fun thrill ride.

People access powers and abilities, as in other stories that have been touched on in different media: Heroes, The Matrix, Jumper. There's a cadre of baddies, and a renegade band of good guys just trying to stay one step ahead of the Collectors.

This ain't no quilting bee, it's a street-fight of a book. If you like it tough and raw and quick, if you like gritty urban tableaux, bone-crunching fight scenes, and snarky, sly, witty dialogue, this book is right up your dirty, dangerous alley. Be careful, because once you start, you have to tear through to the end. You'll feel as adrenaline power-pumped as the characters when you're done.

I'm giving it 5 stars because it's such a rush.

This book reminded me of Amped which I read earlier. Sadly it left me with the same feeling: I needed more. The idea is wonderful and unique. Taking these pills called Muse to heighten a dormant superpower within you seems awesome, and if done better I would be drooling over this story; being the nerd that I am. But the characters are bland, the dialogue at times is blahzay, and there several jarring format and editorial issues: wrong names, spelling, broken sentences, etc... Knowing that this is an origin story I'm not surprised by the slow nature of the story, however at times the characters seem stuck at the club not doing anything to further the plot.
I really wanted to love this story, it seemed promising. However I was let down by the writing. I am hesitant on continuing the story any further.

After enjoying following the author on Twitter for a very long time, this novel was highly anticipated by me. It was the first title I purchased when I finally had an e-reader. (Unfortunately, I purchased the sequel prior to reading the first book.) And while the premise of the book was very intriguing, the shortcomings in its execution were too distracting for me to enjoy it. The dialogue did not ring true for the main male character, and was too cliché for some of the others. The main female character was most convincingly written, probably closely representing the author’s viewpoint. The plot had abrupt twists that were too much to accept, even for an enthusiastic fantasy/sci-fi reader. The story might have been better served by the graphic novel format. It the present form, and overall disappointment.

Very fast, very exciting read!! I can't wait for Volume 2.

I read this book all night and couldn't put it down. I felt like this could be a big budget action movie, like a summer blockbuster with superheroes, but Rated-R.

Anyone who is a fan of fantasy, action and adventure would love this, and the best part was the dialog. Some of the interaction between Cole (the main character) and his friend Jens was as funny as something you'd see in Superbad or a Kevin Smith movie.

My biggest complaint is that it's not a very long book, but I know this is the intro to a larger series and I'm dying to read the rest. For 99 cents this was the best value I've found in 2011 for sure, and it's definitely a sleeper hit.

TOTALLY AMAZING. Just finished this book so I wanted to write my first ever review. As a fan of comic book movies, sci-fi and action this was right up my alley, but I see why it wouldn't be for everyone. It was very violent in some parts and had some pretty pointed social commentary, which I liked a lot. The author definitely took some chances here and it definitely paid off.

I heard this was getting some positive buzz and that a movie might be made which is just awesome news. I would be first in line to buy a ticket for this movie for sure. I felt like I was 'watching' a movie sort of when I was reading it.

Big thumbs up!!! Get this book if you love superheroes, comics, action adventure, or just a great story.

This book rocked my world!!

I read this a while back just figured I'd do a quick review. I didn't know what to expect because I don't get the chance to read too many books, but Vs. Reality definitely rocked it. It was a somewhat short read, and I read it in two sittings, each about 90 minutes or so but I am a very fast reader.

I don't want to do any spoilers so I'll just say it's a really action packed book with lots of four letter words, violent altercations and some really intense fight scenes. The last third of the book is all action, and I couldn't put it down until I was done.

Blake, if you're reading this, get moving on the sequel!! I want Vs. Reality Volume two right now!!

Loved it. Easy five-star.

I enjoyed this book. It's a very interesting and unique take on the superhero genre as well as a quick and fun read. The only negative thing I can say is that the story pov was a little...different. There's nothing wrong with a 'now' pov, just something I'm not very used to reading. That said, though, I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the genre. I'm looking forward to the second book.

Loved the over all story although I am not used to reading many books in the narrative style/tense? that Blake choose, so it took a bit for me to get used to it. It is more geared I think to a comic book flow which I believe Blake explained was the stories original intend purpose.

Through part one of Vs. Reality, Blake discloses enough about each character to pique your interest but leaves enough hanging to make you want part two to hurry up and arrive.

New ideas, well written, entertaining.

A new take on Super Heroes, unknowing humans have the ability to manifest super powers under the right condition or with the help of "Muse" A big blue horse pill that triggers the powers for a short time.

Interesting concept.

I liked the decided lack of Damsel in Distress.

I'll read the next one when it comes out.

Dan recommended this one and that is so rare that I figured I would check it out. I like the premise and I will probably followed up with book two. I can't say I love the main character (I can't relate to him much) but I have hope book two may be better. Overall it was an enjoyable read.

I wasn't too sure this one would be up my alley, but this girl knows how to write. Lots of action intrigue. Very cool stuff.

Like a comic book it's fast paced and fun with absolutely no redeeming value. That is unless one considers entertainment a redeeming value.
