I started writing at 8 years old and when I speak to kids at schools or libraries I show them the stories I wrote as a child. I loved mystery series like Judy Bolton and Nancy Drew, and my DREAM was to write a series of my own. This happened when My Sister the Ghost was published by Avon books in 1994.
Since then I’ve been fortunate to write other series like The Seer, Dead Girl trilogy, Strange Encounters, Regeneration and Curious Cat Spy Club. I recently added a mini mystery to the Curious Cat Spy Club series titled Dog Rescue Time Warp which has a surprise ending.
I love hearing from fans and always write back. And I’ll send a spy activity packet to anyone that asks. Email link at www.LindaJoySingleton.com
I have always been drawn to anything involving the mind and have always been fascinated by psychics. Having been born in the caul, and having a Great-Grandmother that read tarot cards, I was ready to jump on board and read a book that dealt with the powers of the psyche. And I was not disappointed.
Don't Die Dragonfly is the first book in The Seer series. Sabine Rose is sent to live with her maternal Grandmother, Nona, after a boy dies at her school. Plagued with visions, she feels as if she let this boy down, and could have done more to prevent his death. Add a not so cooperative spirit guide and she feels totally lost. Her mother has never been able to accept the "gift" that she was born with, and seeing as how Nona has similar abilities, she feels that she is better suited to help raise her. Sabine has misled Nona into believing that her powers are gone and that she is just a regular teenager, a desception that could lead to some problems in her future (to bad she couldn't see things about herself).
Sabine was looking forward to starting a new school, and actually was leading a pretty good life for a teenager. She was on the school newspaper and was best friends with one of the cheerleaders, she figured that things would be great as long as no one found out that she was a psychic. Unfortunately, shortly after she comes to live with her Grandmother she starts having visions...terrifying visions of a girl with a dragonfly tattoo. As much as she would like to turn a blind eye, she knows that she needs to try and do better than she did at her previous school, and vows to help save this girl. She encounters many obstacles along the way, will it be too many to stop a tragedy, a tragedy only she knows about?
This is one of the most fantastic books that I have read, and was a real page turner. I don't want to go into too much detail, but if you are looking for a book to grab you and make you question what abilities might be lurking in your head, this is it.
Questions for the author:
Are there any psychics in your family?
Not that I'm aware of -- but I strongly believe in listening to my intuition and think it has saved me many times, like when I had a strong feeling not to go back to my car alone or when I was jogging down a deserted street. I've learned to trust my feelings always.
Do you believe in tarot readings, mediums, etc...or was it just something that was fun to write about?
I believe that it's more likely amazing things are possible for the simple fact that humans are more than just the bodies we wear. I love to go to psychic fairs and I've read many books on psychics. Although I've had no solid proof in my personal life that it's all real, I feel strongly that more things are possible than are not. I even suspect that my character Sabine came to me in dreams as a gift for my writing.
What hobbies do you enjoy besides writing?
I collect girl series books, love reading (of course!), taking walks, going to movies, boating, playing cards, camping, square dancing and bowling. I also love to blog and spend lots of time online.
Can we look forward to more books with Sabine et all?
There are five books in the series. #4 SWORD PLAY goes back to Sabine's previous life and reveals secrets about a student's death. At the moment FATAL CHARM is the last book and I'm working on the DEAD GIRL series, the first book DEAD GIRL WALKING comes out September 2008. If my Llewellyn publisher ever wants more THE SEER books, I'd love to write them. To stay updated with my latest book news, check out www.myspace.com/LindaJoySingleton . I hope to share my next book cover soon!

(Source: I own a copy of this book.) 16-year-old Sabine has a secret – she gets visions and warnings about the future – although they’re always about other people. Her latest warning is about a girl with a dragonfly tattoo, although she’s not really sure what she’s supposed to be warning her about. When someone puts the janitor in the hospital after a break in at the school, Sabine is determined to find out who did it, especially when it seems the culprit is trying to frame her. Who injured the janitor? Why are they trying to frame her? And what should the girl with the dragonfly tattoo not do?
This was an interesting story, and I thought the mystery element was done well.
Sabine was an okay character but she was a bit dumb at times (Violet Ambrose Syndrome). If you suspect someone of a crime, and you already know that they hate you – do not follow them alone to a dark janitors closest. I mean – Sabine – do you have no common sense?
The storyline was pretty good, although I did wonder if this was going to be a bit too young for me. Thankfully this wasn’t the case, but Sabine did come across as a little immature at times! I thought the mystery aspect was done quite well, although I did pick up on stuff a lot quicker than Sabine did. I did think that this was an enjoyable story though. The ending was good, even if I did guess what was going to happen quicker than Sabine did. We were left with a bit of a cliff-hanger, but again, how Sabine didn’t see this coming I don’t know! Overall; an enjoyable YA paranormal mystery, 7 out of 10.
This is the first book of the sequel "The seer" and so far I really liked this book. Sabine Rose was kicked out of her school and sent to live with her grandma,Nona. Sabine have a psychic gift that lead her to get kicked out of her school. She's trying really hard to prove that she was innocence of killing a girl at her old schoo. She can sense dangers and many other things. Now in her new school shes trying to be normal like a teenage girl would. But when she starts having deadly visions of a girl with dragonfly tatoo she's really freaked out. How will she help that girl or will she end of murdering again? Sabine feels in love with a new boy named Josh and he has a friend name Evan and Danielle. Rose recognized one day that Danielle have a tatoo with a dragonfly on it. She doesnt talk about it because they'll think she's a freak. The next thing Rose finds out is that Nona had invited a strange boy name Dominic. Later she find out that Dominic can communicate with animals and find out if somebody is in danger. But what does he got to do with Nona? And what secrets is Danielle hiding against Evan? read the book to fnd out! You'll love it!!!
It was very simple in it's conception. I enjoyed the path the characters were on. It felt a little less developed than I had hoped for. I think it was the ya target audience really. In the end, I wanted more so overall it was a good read. I liked it.
I'd recommend this to a reader on the young side of young adult. Although the first person protagonist Sabine Rose is a high school student, the writing is rather simplistic for that age. The plot line is not that unique, either.
What makes the book interesting and worth reading are the characters of Sabine and the people around her, and their interactions. Many teenagers are convinced that, if others discover their secret self (even if it's not that they're psychic), they'll be rejected and lose all their friends. They'll empathize with Sabina about that. And as Sabina grows in confidence and begins to overcome that fear, a teen reader may borrow a bit of her courage as she gets more comfortable with herself.
I had trouble rating this. I find it on the low side of books I usually give 3 stars. Nevertheless, I'll probably continue to read at least one of the others in the series.
Sabine is sent to live with her grandma. Tired of feeling like an outcast she decides to keep her psychic powers to herself, even from the one person who can help her-her grandma. When she get's a job in her school's newspaper, being friends with popular cheerleader Penny love, and when Josh DeMarco starts to show more interest in her, she finally feels normal and fit's in. But everyday she's reminded she cannot be normal because she can never get her bossy sprit guide, Opal out of her mind or the the mysterious girl with the Dragon tatoo.
Personal Response: I loved it. At first I was hoping that it wouldn't be a series because I had a different book series to read after that. I didn't want to be strung out over getting the next book, but I guess the exact thing I didn't want to do is kind of happening. But either way it was a very wonderful story and I am definitely going to find the second book.
Plot: It starts off with Sabine helping edit the paper at her new school with her friend Manny. Sabine is a seer which means that she can see visions of the future, but only of other people. She continues to have visions of a girl with a dragonfly tattoo who is in big danger. A few other things happen but it goes to explain her crush on a guy named Josh at school. As she is watching him in his class she saves him from being squished by a sliding car in the auto shop classroom. Finally being noticed by him they get together and go on a date. They double up with Josh's friend Evan and his girl Danielle, who is the girl with the dragonfly tattoo. Sabine´s grandmother, Nona, who is also a seer has hired a boy named Dominic to help around the farm. Sabine, who was uninformed of this found him with his falcon, Dagger. This puts a bad line between the two and an unfriendliness that neither is willing to solve. A few nights later Sabine has another vision of a bloody dragonfly, running to the school she catches Danielle trying to steal something from the filing cabinet in the office. They get caught by the janitor there but when he tries to catch them they escape. At school the next morning Sabine finds out that the school was vandalized and the janitor was attacked and knocked senseless. Since he could not remember anything Sabine and Danielle are safe. Danielle isn't at school but Sabine is afraid of getting caught and accused. She asks her friend Manny about what to do, and they begin the investigation. When Sabine calls up Danielle to find out what she was doing on that night she finds out that she was there to get a copy of a test but failed to get it. Eventually Sabine tells Manny about her ability, and Manny goes off and finds another girl with a special talent. This girl, Thorn, can find things by touching the hand of the person who hid the object she´s looking for. Together Sabine and Thorn look for the objects that were stolen from the school on the night it was vandalized. They find the vice principal´s chair out in the woods and the rest of the objects in Sabine´s locker. Now they know that someone is out to get her. Danielle is back at school and is terribly sad, Evan had left her and found someone else. When Sabine tries to comfort her she says that Sabine didn't understand, and runs off. Finding her at the football field watching practice, Sabine finds that the test was not for herself but for Evan, because if he failed another bio test he would be kicked off the football team. Danielle is incredibly angry at Evan and and makes vague threats towards him. Running into Evan himself, Sabine learns that Evan is the one who vandalized the school and is trying to frame Sabine. He thinks that she is getting in the way of Josh and his friendship and making it seem like she was a bad girl would make Josh hate her. Following him into the school she is tricked and Evan locks her in the office, spray paints the walls and hides the cans in her locker. Dominic finds her and gets her out before she is found by the new janitor, and they get rid of the paint cans as well. Sabine has a vision of the past, of a boy in a thunderstorm chained to a tree. The boy is screaming above the thunder and she knows that it is Dominic. When Sabine asks him about it be simply tells her that a man wasn't right in the head and that he hurt him to make himself feel powerful. Instead she asks him how he found her. Dominic says that he too has a special power, he can talk to animals, and the animals tell him where Sabine is going. Going back to school the next day without trouble, Sabine, Manny and Thorn devise a plan to get at Evan. Thorn takes them to a candy shop called Tricks and Treats. The shop keeper is a friend of Thorn's and she takes them to a secret room full of superstitious things for luck and predictions. They make up a pouch of luck to give to Mr. B, Evan's bio teacher. He being superstitious, the write a fake prediction for the Mystic Manny column in the school paper, saying that bad things will come. When Mr. B reads it he will ask Manny for help on what to do to avoid the bad things and Manny gives him the pouch. Thorn, being prepared, had a custom fortune cookie made that said "change the test". The plan went exactly as planned and Evan, now with not having the answers to the test, failed and was kicked off the football team. Meanwhile Danielle was not at school. Sabine, being concerned and still having visions, rushes over to Danielle's house with Thorn. When her dad answers the door the go up to her room and find a suicide note on her pillow. Thorn has never tried to use her power to find people before, but she gathers enough that they find her at the football field. Her wrists are cut and bleeding. They speed her to the hospital in time to save her, had they been any later Danielle would have died. Meanwhile Nona is loosing herself. She hides things in strange places and forgets where they are. The story ends with her sending off Sabine and Dominic to find something that will save Nona.
Recommendation: I would recommend this book to People who like tales of psychics and seers. Or teen girls.
I really enjoyed this little book. I picked it up for some light reading, and am pleased to say I really liked it there wasn't to many things I didn't really like about it. One major thing was some parts of it where predictable, and there where a few typos. I really enjoyed following Sabine through this story and feeling all her emotions while she could tell the future. Getting her dream guy, having a few friendship troubles. And making friends with someone seemingly completely different then her, wrapped up in a cliff hanger. Can't wait to get the next one
There were parts of this book that I really, really enjoyed- namely Sabine's visions and the mysterious Dominic- and then there were parts that I never quite connected with.
To start with, Josh is the most freaking perfect person EVER. The guy volunteers at a Children's Hospital for Pete's sake. He doesn't lose his temper. He doesn't have any vices that were mentioned. He's... perfect. And let's face it, Mr Perfect would be nice in real life but in a story he's just boring. That right there was the problem: I never got a sense of chemistry between Sabine and Josh. She has these great, life-defining secrets and he's an open book.
Dominic, on the other hand, was layered and surly and infinitely more interesting. His past is muddled and painful and I'd rather read about him than Perfect Josh. Sadly, Dominic wasn't even presented as a love interest in this book. I can see it happening somewhere down the road but Sabine spent the better half of the book despising him for breathing. Which was kinda cool, unto itself.
Now Sabine... I liked her visions. I liked that she was willing to put aside her fears and try to help when she could. The downside is that I never felt like she was a high school kid. The sense of conflict she felt over her gift was presented but it not really fleshed out. She was too poised most of the time. I (vaguely) remember high school and I sure as hell didn't have anything as volcanic as a psychic gift to deal with and I was still fumbling my way through the dark more often than not. She wasn't. It took me out of the story, honestly. I could have done with more angst and less poise, I guess.
Overall, I liked the book but I wasn't wowed by it. I am curious as to where Dominic will end up and how he'll put his past behind him but I could do without Josh and his perfect perfection. If Sabine's visions are consistently of the bloody, violent variety I'd be all over the next book.
I was pleasantly surprised by how interesting this book was. It is by a local author who visited my daughters school. She was autographing books, so I bought 3, one for each of my older three daughters. Although I was intrigued by this author from the get go (she has the same first and last [maiden:] name as my mother, the middle is different)I assumed her books were written for younger reader, even though her genre claimed to be YA.
The MC, a 16 year old girl named Sabine, has inherited her grandmother's psychic powers. She has visions of the future. When she correctly predicts the death of a football star at her HS, she is shunned by her friends, and considered suspicious and freakish by everyone else in town. She is petitioned out of school and sent to live with her grandmother (who lives in a town strangely similar to Galt, Ca). Desperately trying to forget her past and fit in at a new school, things seem to better, more normal. She has a new friend and a potential boyfriend. She does her best to ignore the image of a bleeding dragonfly. It haunts her dreams. Even in the daytime she can't get out of her head, and then she meets a girl with a draginfly tattoo on her wrist.
While the story line was a little "That's so Raven"ish, it didn't take away from the suspense. It didn't seem middle schoolish at all. The romance with her new boyfriend, Josh, was sweetly innocent, but enhanced by Dominic, the mysterious guy who came to help Sabine's grandmother on the farm. Dominic can relate to Sabine's "gifts" he has a few talents of his own.
I enjoyed Don't Die Dragonfly, but the two novels that follow in the sequence are even better as Sabine's powers became broader and the tension between Sabine and Dominic intensifies. They can no longer ignore the connection between them. I will be heading to the library to find the last two books soon!
I have had this book forever on my Kindle and finally decided to give it a read. I believe there are six book in this series right now. This was a very quick read and was okay. The dialogue throughout is a bit stiff and awkward and the story is predictable.
The main character, Sabine, can see glimpses of the future and occasionally see ghosts. She is starting over at a new high school pretending to be a "normal" girl after some events at her old high school caused her to leave. When Sabine sees a vision of a bloody dragonfly and then she meets a girl with a dragonfly tattoo she is worried that she won’t be able to keep her Seer gift secret for long.
This is one of those books where the main character sees a vision and spends a lot of time trying to figure out the vision and then stop those events from happening. It reminded me a bit of Laurie Faria Stolarz’s Blue is for Nightmares series; except this book was less scary and more awkwardly written.
The dialogue is a bit stiff and awkward throughout and the story is very predictable. It's mostly a lot of high school drama and mystery. I never related to any of the characters that well and don't plan on reading future books in this series. The story does wrap up pretty well though, so that was nice.
Overall this was an okay book. I enjoyed the idea of a character who can see glimpses of the future, but it is definitely not all that creative. The dialogue is a bit awkward throughout and I had trouble engaging with the characters. I also found the mystery to be very predictable. I would recommend Laurie Faria Stolarz’s Blue is for Nightmares series if you are interested in reading about a YA seer who solves creepy mysteries. If you are looking for another series kind of like Blue is for Nightmares, this one is okay if not as well written. I don’t plan on reading any more books in this series.
DON'T DIE, DRAGONFLY is the first book in Linda Joy Singleton's THE SEER series. If the next books are as good as book number one, this is sure to be one of my favorite book series (earning a place next to books by such fabulous authors as JK Rowling, Tamora Pierce, John Marsden, Amelia Atwater-Rhodes, and Scott Westerfeld).
Some problems have caused Sabine Rose to be expelled from her old school, and she just wants her time at Sheridan High to be normal. No more creepy weirdness--namely, having psychic visions. Unfortunately, wishes don't always come true. Her psychic powers are acting up again.
In her visions, Sabine sees a girl with a dragonfly tattoo. These are scary, dangerous visions, and Sabine doesn't know what to do about them. Can she figure it out before it's too late?
This is a very enjoyable novel, suspenseful and full of great characters. Linda Joy Singleton is a great writer! This is highly recommended for anyone who loves a good mystery with a great paranormal element. Book number two in this series is in my to-read stack; I can't wait to get a chance to read it!
I might never have found this book if not for my friend, who convinced me to read it.
While the writing style is fairly light and straightforward, I loved the story. Sabine lives with her grandmother, both of them gifted with unusual psychic powers. Sabine is still learning to control and use her abilities, with the help of her sometimes snide spirit companion Opal. But with her gift kept a secret, she manages to live a fairly normal high school life.
But then something happens. Sabine begins to be tormented with visions of a girl with a dragonfly tattoo...a girl who is in mortal danger. And Sabine has to find her and warn her, before it's too late.
With the help of her grandmother's handyman Dominic, a blunt young guy with a mysterious skill of his own, Sabine begins to realize that she is coming into her full powers...and she's going to need them.
As with many books, the characters make this novel, but the plotline is still suspenseful. And the other books introduce plenty more problems to be solved.
I read this young adult book in one day! Maybe because I am twice as old as the suggested reader. I don't care though, because it helped me escape into a world of the paranormal. Sabine is a young girl trying to find her way in life with a secret that she hides only to protect herself from becoming the outcast she was in her former school. She finds her way through her mundane life and finds love, friends and people who really like her for who she is. And someone she needs to trust to help her Grandmother. It helps the reader believe that even if your down and out there is always something out there about yourself that lets the real you shine through.
Perfect for young readers because it's not overtly romantic or crude... Some elements of love/like but a kiss is as far as it goes.
I would recommend this to my young friends and nieces... I will save this for my little one for when she is ready...
Don't Die, Dragonfly is 288 pages of a fast pace adventure. 17 year old Sabine Rose is starting over. After foretelling the death of a high school student, Sabine is ostracized by her peers and her community. Therefore, her controlling mother sends her to live with her grandmother who seems to understand her unique abilities. Rose is fitting in her new environment just fine until her grandmother hires a young man, Dominic to assist with the farm and a girl at school becomes obsessed with a star football player. This is where the adventure begins. Linda Joy Singleton's has a unique vision. The story line is interesting and fast paced. However, if you are looking for sophisticated imagery and extensive characterizations she is not the author for you. I found her writing very simplistic at times. But, it did not interfere with my enjoyment of the book. I did appreciate the innocence of the book (minimal to non profanity and sex).
4.5 stars Reread in July 2017 So glad I got to reread this. It was so mind-blowing. I thought some stuff were unanswered...but that may be just me. Dominic is definitely my favourite. Don't get me wrong, Josh is your typical sweetheart guy, but Dominic steals my heart. He and Sabine are just so cute. I love their love-hate relationship. The mystery aspect was well thought-out. It definitely shocked and surprised me. I totally forgot as well how funny this novel was. The characters are so unique and quirky. They're all differently portrayed that it works. Love the main character. Adore this book.
1st Review This novel had everything. It was so captivating, because of the mystery, the actions and the romance. I loved this and I would totally recommend it to all witch fans. It was also an easy read.
This was an interesting book, but it was sort of difficult to work past the grammatical and flat-out word errors in this book. At one point, Sabine's love interest tells her that he will need to take up fishing when she shows up wearing some hook-type earrings, implying that he will need to do it to catch her. She responds with, "You're already caught me." It should have said you've already caught me. I can't really blame the author for these errors.. that's what the author pays her editors to catch. For me, though, it's a distraction that shouldn't be there.
I will be reading the next book in this series. The author is definitely good at writing a cliffhanger that leaves you wanting more.
This book is about Sabine and how she got kicked out of her previous school because she predicted that a football player from her school was gonna die and then that same prediction happened. So the school thinks she killed him, then Sabine is triying to find out what DID kill him,so she goes into the school at night at the crime scene and search for clues then thats when she sees HIM.Hes alive..or not. This book is good and I found it in Ms Lacy books.
This book was amazing, i stayed up to 3am reading this. Every time a book ended, i was so excited to read the next book. this series will make you laugh, it will draw you in, and its a perfect escape. I read this series during my senior year in high school, and it made the time pass by. If you havent had the opportunity, to read this book, go to your library and start. its fantastic!!! its a great paranormal read.
Sabine is an average girl with one power no one else has. She sees the future. When Sabine starts having visions of this girl with a dragonfly tattoo. She goes on the search to find this girl. Will she risk everything she has worked for or will she help this girl before it's too late?
This book is geared toward young adults but I enjoyed those feelings of young crushes and first time love. The conflict Sabine feels as to whether she is blessed or cursed by her gift comes across to the reader. Only thing I didn't like is that the ending leaves you hanging and if you are interested in learning more need to read the next 4 books in the series.
Yeah baby, that's what I am talking about. This book has been a joy to read. I couldn't help reading the next book in the series as soon as I put this down.
"Don't Die Dragonfly" is a mystery book full of magic and suspense and romance on the sidelines - which was cute and never annoying.
I found this book five star worthy. Way to go, L.J. Singleton!
This book was a great start to the series. The story is very interesting and I haven't read one like it before. Definately something I'd recommend. You can't help but want to know what adventures Sabine will encounter to achieve her goal.
ok this book is so awesome! i feel sorry for those who havent read it yet! this story is about a girl who can see well ghosts! she helps them pass on to the other life i guess but along the way she has a small romance part well maybe a big one anyway u people should read this!
this also fused a lot of things i like into one really good book. it was like realistic fiction and fantasy blended together with a bunch of stuff that seemed irrelevant but made the story much better than it could've been without it.
