In the aftermath of a vicious mugging, Sophie Colton returns home to her family ranch to recuperate. There, she and her foster brother, River James, rekindle the feelings they have always had for one another.
While the ongoing arc surrounding the changes in Meredith Colton's personality from a wonderful and loving wife and mother into a vicious and cruel woman is interesting, the romance between Sophie and River is not at all appealing.
River is a great hero; he has overcome the trauma of his past with an abusive father and become an honest, hardworking, and compassionate man. Sophie, on the other hand, a spoiled, immature and haughty brat. The way she speaks to and treats River is appalling and makes it impossible to root for their relationship.
Despite my issues with Sophie and River's relationship, I am interested in the other Colton siblings and foster siblings's stories.

This book introduces the series. Meredith Colton is planning a major party for her husband Joe Colton's 60th birthday. And some other deadly surprises. .......
The major love interest in this book is Sophie Colton and a foster child still living on the ranch, River James. They grew up together, until Sophie graduated from high-school and moved away for college & a job. She then was engaged, until a vicious mugging brought Joe to help her and she broke it off with her fiancée. She also moved back to the ranch where she learned some creepy things about her mother, uncle, and that River was still in love with her. River and Sophia were set to announce their engagement but Joe was shot at during the first toast .........
Unbeknownst to the characters, but the reader is privy to: Louise is having problems with her memory. Her therapist tries hypnosis and some memories resurface. She had episodes and feelings based on the events happening to other characters.
I wanted to find out what happens with the stolen identity aspect of this series. I think: Patsy and Meredith were twins. Patsy was committed, had a girl that was kidnapped (Jewel), and then assumed Meredith's identity so as to find Jewel. She dropped a child off and then had an affair while "Meredith", breaking Joe's heart. Louise is the real Meredith, but has had amnesia which prevents her from confronting her twin and reclaiming her happy family.

I really liked this book. It was a fun quick read that held my attention from page 1. I liked both the main characters River James (Joe’s Foster son) and Sophie (Joe’s daughter). Sophie always followed River when she was younger and always loved him. River always loved Sophie too, but he sent her away. After Sophie is mugged and moves back to the ranch, their feelings take over. You have the continued story about Meredith(Joe’s wife that has amnesia).

Sophie is rich, successful and hiding a sadness of her own. River is a loner and the Colton's gave him a home, a family, and a future when he thought he had nothing left. Always attracted to each other, Sophie and River reach out to help each other.
