What's the purpose of any kanji book? Many would say, "Of course, to teach you kanjis." That's true, but it's an incomplete answer because context matters.
Kanjis are a great example of recognition and recall. Each area brings its own challenges: recognition triggers shape memorization and word usage, while recall relies on stroke order and one's style. Which is the most important for N1? Recognition.

That's what SM N1 Kanjis does; it is mainly a book of recognition with an occasional recall exercise. The recall exercises are dubious, as writing a kanji in a book that only teaches you to identify them is hard. It's like asking you to dive from just practicing swimming. The English translation is far from perfect, too (see 左利き on page 86 or 霜が降りる on page 93 ).

Overall, SM N1 Kanjis is a comprehensive database and a valuable reference for kanji learning. However, it's important to use it in conjunction with other resources. Pairing it with a spaced-repetition app like Anki, where you can register and practice all the vocabulary for each week, can enhance your learning journey and boost your confidence before the exam.
