This should have been a fantastic read. It had all the hallmarks.

I was in awe of the spectacular cover, intrigued by the premise, and I’m a big fan of historical fiction. I also come from a family of girls and thought, on some level, I could relate to the sibling experience. I was certain that the book would have a wonderful sense of place as the author lives in the Channel Islands.

I struggled with the character development, the repetitive 'telling not showing', the unbelievable coincidences, and the uncomfortable exchanges between characters. The ending was ‘the straw that broke the camel’s back.’ I felt let down.

Please don’t let my disappointment cloud your choice. I truly appreciated the invitation to read this book, but it’s obvious after the second book by this author, that I prefer a faster-paced story with a larger helping of reality.

I was gifted this copy by One More Chapter and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.

Phoebe Richardson is a member of the Voluntary Aid Detachment service, she's stationed at the base hospital in Étaples France, here they treat men straight from the trenches, and they are wounded or sick, exhausted and filthy. This is how Phoebe meets Captain Archie Bailey, he’s one of the men she’s attending to and much to his embarrassment, she discovers Archie is an architect and from Sandsend. Falling in love and forming attachments with patients is strictly forbidden, but Archie and Phoebe do and knowing he will be send back to England to finish his recovery and then return to the front.

Celia Richardson is a qualified nurse, she working at a POW camp on the Island of Jersey and one of her patients is Lieutenant Otto Hoffman and he’s an Austrian doctor. Despite warning Phoebe about keeping her distance from patients, Celia discovers Otto isn't the monster she thought he would be, he was conscripted into the German army and her attitude towards to the enemy changes.

Both Phoebe and Celia struggle through the war years, in Phoebe’s case her health suffers and she goes to Cornwall for a much needed rest. Celia likes Otto, but her parents and brother were killed in a Zeppelin attack and is it possible for them to be together and what would Phoebe think?

I received a copy of The Poppy Sisters by Deborah Carr from HarperCollins UK and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. The story gives you a realistic idea what it was like in England, France and Jersey during The Great War, the wounds and medical procedures, comradery and friction between hospital staff, bond between siblings, bravery and having to being stoic and treating prisoners of war and show them compassion.

The character driven narrative focuses on the resilience of Celia, Phoebe, Archie, Otto, Jocasta and Louis, developing feelings and wartime romantic relationships, love and longing, waiting for the war to end and the outbreak of the Spanish flu. Another well written historical fiction story by Ms. Carr and I hope there is a sequel as I would like to know what happens between Celia and Otto and five stars from me.

We begin in 1916 with Phoebe who is working in a Base Hospital in Etaples, in France, as a VAD. She joined up when her parents and brother were killed in a raid in England. Her sister Celia, already a nurse, is working in a prisoner of war hospital in Jersey.
I was looking forward to this read as I love anything set in the war and the prisoner of war camp really drew my attention. Unfortunately it just did not work for me. Celia's love affair causes consternation with some people and she makes an enemy among the other nurses. The way this played out was unbelievable and then it fizzled out.
Phoebe falls in love with a patient and plays a dangerous game while trying to keep it secret. She then goes to Cornwall to recuperate with a woman she hasn't met before and within twenty four hours they're bosom buddies.
Both of them seem to be able to get transfers to different hospitals or camps without any trouble.
At times the conversations were very stilted and it was all just a little bit flat. There was no excitement. The characters were all one dimensional. I didn't care about any of them and the ending was a total disappointment. We're left hanging, wondering if a certain thing does ever happen or not.
Such a pity. It could have been a great story.

I enjoyed this historical fiction book and found it interesting and informative.

Phoebe, volunteer nurse at a Base Hospital in Étaples, France. Matron does her best to keep the nurses minds occupied with just nursing but there's no counting on where the heart will lead. Phoebe soon finds herself falling in love with patient Captain Archie Bailey. Planning a life together after the war when he's well enough he gets sent to the frontline then goes missing in action, presumed dead.

Celia is a nurse at a POW camp on the island of Jersey. She knows the men she is nursing back to health are from the same unit that killed her brother and parents. After getting to know these men she realizes they are just regular men with hopes, dreams and fears just like all of us. Falling in love with one of them shouldn't have happened, but it has.

Phoebe and Celia are sisters with many similarities, they understand what the other is going through and know the fears they face. Heartbreaking....... there are no real winners in war, it just causes some to die earlier than others. Kept my attention as you can only pray for the best. The author writes such realistic work I could vividly imagine the scenes playing out as I read.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book.
All opinions expressed are my own.

I really enjoyed this one, I thought it was written very well and the plot was good and kept me intrigued. I really liked it as a romance as well, I had a lot of appreciation for there not being anything that I didn’t want to read as a Christian teen.

Very disappointing, this was slow, boring and had far too many characters. I just couldn't get into this book at all.

A unique spin on WWI, with two sisters (both nurses) who fall for men fighting for different sides. Heartbreaking, hopeful!

This story had such promise but fell just short. I couldn’t connect with the sisters and, despite the fact that they were stationed in different areas, it was difficult to distinguish between the two at times. The story itself was OK; there was nothing really different that in any other historical fiction and the ending left a lot to be desired. At times, the story moved pretty slowly so the pacing was a little off but overall, an OK read.

I received a copy from #NetGalley and #HarperCollins for an honest review.

With each book I read, I’m becoming more and more of a fan of Deborah Carr and her beautiful style of writing. In The Poppy Sisters we travel back to World War 1 and meet a pair of sisters separated by war but always united by strength and courage.

Upon losing their parents and brother in an air raid, sisters Phoebe and Celia go their separate ways and become nurses. Phoebe heads to France as a volunteer nurse tending to her own countrymen. Celia is sent to Jersey and attends to Germans prisoners in a POW camp. Both women meet someone who would change their lives.

Phoebe meets and falls in love with Captain Archie Bailey. They are to be married but he is sent back to the front and before long, Phoebe learns he is missing and presumed dead. With her grief keeping her from performing her duties and neglecting her health, she steps back from her nursing duties to recover at the home a friend. Celia finds herself falling for a prisoner, Otto, an Austrian who was conscripted into the German army but is a doctor and a good man. She butts heads with other nurses who want to treat these prisoners as the enemies not human beings.

As time passes, these sisters never give up on hope and love. They had already lost so much because of the war and they weren’t willing to let go of what might be in the future.

I loved this story. While fiction, there are certainly aspects of WWI that i was able to research a little further so I definitely took away a bit of history lesson which I’m always grateful for!

Thanks so much to NetGalley, Harper Collins UK, One More Chapter and the lovely Deborah Carr for an early copy of this book!

Thanks to NetGalley for providing me an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

While this book may not be for every body, I truly loved it. I had been craving a historical fiction read and this book was just what I had been looking for. The stress Phoebe and Celia went through was palpable, and Carr wrote in a way that makes it impossible not to root for them. While it does end on somewhat of a cliffhanger, the direction it is going it clear and therefore not an issue to me.

One More Chapter novels are enjoyable reads, and the “Poppy Sisters” was a hit or miss historical novel. I have not read anything by Deborah Carr in some time and was delighted to be given the opportunity to read this story.

Nurses, Phoebe and Celia are sisters who have suffered the loss of their whole family in a bombing in England. It is a story of forbidden love, friendship, and hard work during a period of war. However, it was a bit too descriptive that left some parts a bit dry, and I struggled with some parts as though something was not connecting. The pace was quite slow too and almost DNF this about 40% into the book but decided to finish until the end.

Very rarely do I miss on One More Chapter stories…this one just did not do it for me. It felt lacking and a bit boring. Look forward to more One More Chapter stories.

If you are looking for a story about sisters who truly love each other no matter what this is the story for you. I found this story so engaging and was surprised at the things that I learned because I am not very well versed in WWI history.
My least favorite part of this book was probably the pacing just because we went from watching these characters day to day life and then months and almost a year jumped. I do understand the need to jump time the way the book did I just wish we could have seen a little more of our characters during those time jumps.
My dislike aside I thought that the story of this book was fantastic and enjoyed the conversations that this book brings up. I thought that both of the sisters felt fleshed out and stood on their own. I do think I preferred Phoebe's point of view the most but Celia's point of view was definitely not bad. I also loved both of the male love interest.
I think that this book does a great job of giving those of us who love the War type stories a new and interesting time period to explore and I will be picking up more of this authors work.

The Poppy Sisters is set during World War I and is the tale of two sisters. Phoebe is a VAD (volunteer nurse) in France and Celia is a trained nurse in Jersey.

The chapters swap back and forth following the tales of the sisters as they both fall in love with patients. Phoebe’s story incorporates a trip to stay with the sister of one of the doctors in a tiny Cornish village which was a nice location change during the tale.

Celia’s story feels darker with a slightly sinister touch. Celia is a nurse in a prisoner-of-war camp and I was always wondering how it would all end.

I read quite a lot of war stories, but less from the time of The Great War. This was an easy read which flowed well and although it was sad in places, generally it did not reflect the brutality of the time.

This historical romance takes place during World War 1. Phoebe works in France as a VAD, and Celia works at a POW camp in Jersey. Both sisters work hard, and both fall in love with one of their patients. Of course, there are complexities presented by the war, and in one case by the fact that the love interest is a German prisoner.

Two fairly small things stood out to me: First was Jocasta - a young widow who Phoebe befriends and who is just a beautiful person. Next, the descriptions of trench foot and how much the soldiers suffered from the filth on the battlefront.

I felt like this story was heavier on the characters' feelings and the romance than on the war effort. I enjoyed the story.

"The Poppy Sisters" is a story of nursing in World War 1. Celia is a qualified nurse working in a prisoner of war camp in Jersey, and wishing that being on the island was more similar to family holidays there in days gone past. Phoebe is a VAD working at the base hospital in Etaples, helping with the care of British soldiers injured on the Western Front. For both sisters the work is stressful and never-ending, and both are also struggling with memories of their dead parents and brother.

This is the story of how they survive the war and find pleasure in small things which keep them going amid the death and destruction all around them. The differences and similarities of the siblings' situations are described but, at the end of the day (and the war!) they support each other.

A heartwarming story of love, family, friendship and forgiveness. Thanks to Net Galley and Harper Collins UK for the opportunity to review this book.

Another great read from Deborah Carr!

Celia and Phoebe are sisters, both nursing during the Great War - one in Jersey, one in France. Celia, the younger, is posted to a prisoner of war camp on the channel island while Phoebe deals with casualties straight from the front. Their seniors warn all nurses to keep their distance from their patients and not get involved, but it's hard when you meet someone special. And both sisters think they have found that someone - only they are not allowed to do anything about it.

I'm always captivated by a good war story, and this is certainly that. More used to reading this author's series, I was taken aback when the whole tale was in one book - but what a tale it is. Full of ups and downs and not shirking from the gritty side of war, I was glued from beginning to end. Very enjoyable, happy to recommend and give 4.5*.

Set in WWI , two sisters Phoebe and Celia who have lost their parents and brother in a Zeppelin raid both volunteer to assist in the war. Celia is nurse and is working in Jersey , eventually transferring to a prisoner of war camp. Phoebe is based in France as a VAD in a military hospital.

Both sisters fall in love.....one with a soldier the other with a POW. The book follows their work and love... an interesting read and well written.

WWII saga with two sisters both nurses but in different environments. We have Celia working in a POW camp attending to the enemy wounded, and Phoebe helping wounded allies in France.
Both sisters are trying to deal with the heartache of losing there parents and brother to a zeppelin attack earlier in the war. Both are likeable, though predictable in their stories. Very early on you can guess where each story will venture.
Easy reading but well written.

The Poppy Sisters by Deborah Carr is a historical fiction story during WWI. Two sisters, Phoebe and Celia, are serving as nurses in different locations after losing their parents and brother from an air raid. Phoebe is in France caring for injured soldiers and Celia is in Jersey caring for German POW injured soldiers.

Phoebe falls in love with one of her patients, Captain Archie Bailey which is against nursing ethics. Celia falls in love with a German prisoner, Otto, who is an enemy. Other nurses frown upon this relsationship between Otto and Celia. Will these sisters see each other again? What happens to Archie and Phoebe? What happens to Otto and Celia? Their situations are different yet they both have fallen in love unexpectantly. They both persevered through tragedy and heartache with courage and strength. I enjoyed reading this book and look forward to reading more from Deborah Carr. It was a wonderful story but I felt like the ending was hanging a bit.

Two sisters, divided by war, face daily battles to save the lives of the wounded soldiers in their care…This line is an excellent description of this story. A story about two sisters going through a trauma, the trauma that a war leaves behind. The loss, the pain, the distance and the courage to carry on.
A beautiful story showing the strong bondage between two sisters and how they managed to find love in those hard days of the war.
I really loved it, it was very inspiring.

Not for me

I love some historical romance but this book is badly written. Not believable. Empty characters. Predictable. Do not waste your life. Sorry.
