Another one of those "Where did this come from?" books I wanted to read and get rid of. Should have skipped the read. So Angelica, 16, meets and falls in love with A Senior Boy, Gary. She drinks a little, smokes a little weed, has unprotected sex (so is now A Woman) gets grounded for two weeks, and flushes his drug stash down the toilet along with the cash he was saving to buy a college laundry service. Several times the 1988 characters shout, "Do you think I'm gay?" because someone refuses sex. They talk about how alcohol is so much more dangerous than weed. They don't mention AIDS or pregnancy or self-esteem issues with all the If you love me you will sleep with me" stuff. And she says "fuck" once. Booooring, unless you are a fourteen year old girl.

I love the Sooner or Later trilogy and I'm trying to track down all of Bruce and Carole's novels. In Cross Your Heart, sixteen-year-old Angelica falls for seventeen-year-old Gary. She catches him in small likes, but he's always apologetic and has a believable reason. Then she finds out he's selling pot. The Harts capture the over-the-top emotions you can feel as a teen in love and I think realistically portray common attitudes toward sex. (Everyone else has done it...) This story takes an unexpected turn when Angie takes matters into her own hands and leaves the relationship rather unresolved.

My review is based on my high school self. Loved this book and read over and over again. Haven’t seen the book since I was 20, but loved it back then. Saved it here because I saw it listed and didn’t want to forget the name again!
