I ended up using this for my dinosaur storytime because Zoom by Diane Adams (LOVE!) didn't come through the delivery in time. The pop-ups made the kids squeal and scream and roar every time I turned a page, so I know they enjoyed it, but I thought the rhymes were horrid. "Roars" does NOT rhyme with "paws"...at least not where I come from. And, honestly, the rhythm was so awkward on several pages that I had to change around words to make it work. Finally, it needed one more page. Because having to talk about the dinosaurs going to sleep while still on the Elasmosaurus page was awkward. I got around the double-duty first page by memorizing the first rhyme and saying it with the book closed, but that didn't work for the end. At the very least, the back cover could have shown sleeping dinosaurs. The long and the short of it is that I didn't like it, but the kids did. So I'm giving it three stars. If it weren't for the little ones, it would be getting two...
First, the pros. The pop-ups are fun and the pictures are very colorful. My two-year-old seems to dig it. She enjoys putting her pacifier in some of the dinosaurs' mouths. Now, the cons. Oh. It just is not fun to read. The rhymes are strained at best. The book also can't seem to decide whether it's a story or little poems about different dinosaurs. On the last page, there's a random second stanza that talk about the dinosaurs going to sleep, but there are no sleeping dinosaurs on the page. It's just stuck on the same page as the stanza about elasmosaurus. It's like someone forgot to draw the last page. It's a real shame that the words didn't measure up to the illustrations.
"These illustrators never disappoint!!We have the pop-up version of this book & it is definitely one of the best! There was so much detail put into it. My boys treasure this book so much that they are VERY careful when reading it b/c they do not want to take the chance of ripping it!How often does THAT happen with 2 little boys?!?!"
Got this one for my nephew who is a dinosaur nut. Such a cute story and I love the vibrant colors. A fun read to share with the little dinosaur lover in your life.
