Hermann was born in 1938 in Bévercé (now a part of Malmedy) in Liège Province. After studying to become a furniture maker and working as interior architect, Hermann made his debut as comic book artist in 1964 in the comics magazine Spirou with a four page story. Greg noticed his talent and offered him to work for his studio. In 1966, he began illustrating the Bernard Prince series written by Greg, published in the comic magazine Tintin periodical. In 1969, also in collaboration with Greg, he began the western series Comanche. This appeared at the same time as other western series such as Blueberry.
Hermann began writing his own stories in 1977, starting the post-apocalyptic Jeremiah series, which is still produced today. In the same period, he also made three albums of Nick, inspired by Little Nemo in Slumberland, for Spirou.[1] In 1983 he began a new series, Les Tours de Bois-Maury, which is set in the Middle Ages and is less focused on action than his other works.
Hermann has also created many non-series graphic novels sometimes together with his son Yves H. One of them, Lune de Guerre, with a story by Jean Van Hamme, was later filmed as The Wedding Party by Dominique Deruddere.[2]
Hermann is characterized by a realistic style and stories that are both somber and angry, with a sense of disillusion with regards to the human character in general, and current society more specifically.

Hermann non delude mai, e “Caatinga” ne è la prova. Una storia dura, tesa, che si sviluppa in un contesto ostile e spietato, quello del Sertao brasiliano e dei famosi cangaceiros, i leggendari banditi-ribelli brasiliani della prima metà del secolo scorso. Sì, una storia vera, proprio come ci ha abituato il maestro belga. Il tratto ruvido e dettagliato accompagna perfettamente il racconto, amplificando il senso di desolazione e violenza che pervade ogni pagina. Non è un fumetto che cerca di compiacere: è crudo, diretto, senza fronzoli, ma proprio per questo colpisce nel segno. Se amate le storie intense e senza compromessi, “Caatinga” è una lettura che vale assolutamente la pena.

Verhaal over de Cangaceiros, een sociale beweging in Serão, streek in het noordoosten van Brazilië, vooral in de streek van Vaatinga. Ontstaan in de late 19de eeuw en hield op te bestaan met de dood van luitenant "Corisca" in 1940, de laatste Cangaceiros. Ze hielden het midden tussen een soort Robin Hood's en genadeloze misdadigers en richten hun "misdaden" vooral op de grootgrondbezitters (coronels), die een soort semifeodale heersers waren, en de politie. Beiden deden in wreedheid niet voor elkaar onder.

La fascinacion de Hermann con el tema de los Cangaceiros llego con una pelicula homonima que proyectaron en Belgica. El tema le fascino y teniendo un amigo en Brasil, investigo a fondo el tema y creo este comic que va de la mano con Sarajevo-Tango en cuanto a comics one-shot realistas.
Un comic muy interesante, sobre los problemas de los campesinos del norte de Brazil y los ricos hacendados, algo no muy diferente con lo que sucedio (y sucede) en Mexico, me evoco a algunas imagenes de "Que Viva Mexico" de Eisenstein.
