LATER: I've finished this, and it was much more interesting and less dry than I expected. The lives of various historical Montana women are fascinating, and the women featured range from the wife of artist C.M. Russel to politician Jeanette Rankin. While most of the stories are uplifting and inspiring, there are a few that are truly tragic. All in all, though, a diverse and highly intriguing book. Die-hards might wish for more detail, but I found it to be just right.
This short volume contains brief biographies of fourteen women with some connection to Montana. Some were born there but many moved there with their families. The first bio is of a Native American, there are bios of two African Americans and one of a 'half-breed.' All of the women were strong and determined. One of them, Jeanette Rankin, became the first U.S. Congresswoman who, because of her ethical vote during her first term, was not elected to a second term until two decades later.
Montana residents are a hearty lot and this biographical collection of fourteen women of Montana inspire and strengthen those opinions. All before the turn of the century, with varied contributions, these women elevate the high bar of strength, determination and courage of life in the Big Sky country.
After reading a novel about a strong Montanan woman, it seemed fitting to read a book about actual strong Montanan women. The author could have easily doubled or tripled the information given and held my attention. I am hungry for more.
As a native Oregonian, I was very interested to read about women from Oregon, who had a variety of occupations. They all lived in the 19th century, some living well into the 20th century. Very interesting read.
Love biographies of women, and this has a chapter each on many amazing women. The content is worth 5 stars, but the writing knocks it down to a 4. An inspiring, enjoyable, quick read.
