the stories about these remarkable maladies are ok. The stories about the first ladies were not. She spent more time on the presidents than the ladies. The rest of the book was ok but not great.
I would have given it three and a half stars but since I couldn't, it got a better rating than it deserves.
Titles such as this irritate the hell out of me. If this had been a book about twelve remarkable men, that would have been the entire title right there. But no, this book has to sound like a bad romance novel. ("There was more to her than her petticoats. She was headstrong and independent. Could Carl make her see what kind of woman she could become?") UGH.
Despite the Title From Hell, there were twelve good brief biographies in this book. Artists, suffragists, doctors, journalists and First Ladies are included. It's a good book to use as a jumping off point if someone wanted to look deeper into the lives of influential women.
