This book is wonderful. That's the best word I can think of to describe it: wonderful.

Story summary: A young girl named Maria finds a wolf pup near death and nurses him back to health with the help of her grandfather. They try to return him to the wild and his mother, who is presumably in the woods looking for him, but he returns to them and becomes part of their family. Eventually, Shadow (the wolf) gets to be big enough that he needs to leave and start his own life, his own family, and he does. While Maria is sad to lose her friend, she's happy he's happy, and though she knows she'll probably never see him again, she comes to feel his presence in the world all around her.

I love that this story didn't end in tragedy, though at one point I thought it might, and moreover I love how it treated wolves. They were not big bad scary monsters; they were creatures to be treated with respect. In a world filled with wolf-haters it is refreshing to read a children's book that doesn't feed the propaganda machine.

This story was really moving and I teared up several times. Definitely recommended.
