In the year 1810, eleven year old Yance Caywood wants to go hunting, but his mother keeps him tied to her apron strings, fetching and carrying for her around the homestead. When a lone buffalo is sighted by Yance, he is determined to hunt it down. Risking the winter elements Yance goes out on his own followed by his dog Blue to test and prove his mettle to himself, and bring back the buffalo as proof.
