Curious to read of/be reminded of and/or learn of aspects of back-story influences on Biblical writings, along with a fuller context of geo-political and socio-economic forces at work from ~10,000 BC to ~7o AD? Bruce W. Gore delivers! Not only is recorded history for this ancient time period presented and interwoven clearly, but aspects of contempory culture can be understood better thanks to the sweeping historical information gathered on these pages from across countless civilizations, empires, religions and more. The book can also serve as a chilling reminder of the timeless evil and horrific aspects of human nature.

This book and the video series done by the author Bruce Gore has been an avenue of discovering Gods story in history. He has incredible teaching and ease of understanding. This book led me to many of his classes which has also led to other discoveries because of his teaching methods. His classes to high school kids puts many college classes to shame. Well worth the read!

Slightly cheating because I watched the YouTube lecture series covering the contents of this book rather than reading the book itself. It was very, very good. Tons of interesting info about the Egyptians, the Hittites, the Assyrians, the Medo-Persians, Greece, Rome, etc etc, and all presented with a high view of Scripture.

Historical And Chronological Context Of The Bible

An extensive and well-researched tome of a text detailing the history of the earliest civilisations and empires that developed and shaped our World, starting the journey from the ancient Mesopotamian Near East and their neighbouring relationships and conflicts, then taking this journey into Egypt's Dynasties and then further in to the European emergence with the ancient Greeks and the relationship between Athens and Sparta, the Persian wars and the development of Rome into Italy, to eventually finish with the Roman Empire and the second Century. Alongside this chronological timeline is the Biblical record of events and Israel's existence among its neighbouring empires and civilisations.

The cultural, mythological, religious, and trade-market relationships for copper, bronze, cedar, and mineral aspects are discussed for each civilisation, which include some of the Greek and Roman poets, philosophers and great thinkers and lawyers of their time, so there is certainly a lot to absorb and learn. It is a worthwhile read to acquire a knowledge of the World's histories and that of the Biblical record, and contains an extensive collection of verses and passages to support the historical persons within the certain context, such as Abraham coming from the third Dynasty of Ur.

Isaiah 20 is the perfect introduction for why we need to understand the historical context of the Bible. The interwoven story is truly a treat to witness. I particularly enjoy reading about the God-fearing Gentiles heeding the Word of the Lord. Why did the Neo-Assyrian empire suddenly cease their violent ways during the time of Jonah? Why did Cyrus the Great order the rebuilding of the temple after reading Isaiah? Why did the Roman general Titus believe the catastrophe that befell Jerusalem was so horrific that it must have represented the very Judgment of the Jewish God against those people? It is plain to see that redemptive history is being worked out by the sovereign hand of the Lord. He is the author of the greatest story.
