A comprehensive look into many of the African diaspora religions. This book has clear and insightful glimpses into Voodoo, Santeria, Candomble and many more. Quickly it dispels misconception and fills that void with knowledge of religious rites, cosmologies, and practices. There is also a detailed bibliography of other works by various anthropologist, historians and practitioners. A balanced look into a very topical subject

As you may be able to tell from my book list I rarely read nonfiction that is not of a philosophical nature. But my second year in college I took a World religions class which introduced me to a number of pagan religions and I became interested. I picked up this book and was pleasantly surprised to find a work filled with interesting and helpful information but also balanced with more literary personal accounts with voodoo and other similar religion. What this book showed me was that a book does not have to be fiction to be interesting and in all honesty i had never thought this the case before.

Elegant and succinct prose. An immaculately quick read. Perfect introduction to African Traditional Religions. Highly recommended for any beginner wishing to get acquainted quickly with the dynamic, vibrant, living spirit world of Afro-Atlantic peoples. Clearly demonstrates that this practice is a deep and profound journey worthy of lifelong comprehensive study.

A reader for the whole family. As the parent of a teenager, this book helps steer them away from the plethora of pagan nonsense on the market and the internet today. It is a book they can continue to return to and work with for a long period of time.

Very generic. Within the different religions, the information seemed disorganized, there seemed to be little structure.

“La posesión es una unión, un beso de los espíritus.”.

#bookquotes

Este libro es una guía que nos lleva de la mano para comprender algunas de las tradiciones del paganismo afrocaribeño más populares y controversiales de la historia: vudú, yoruba, santería.

Es una lectura interesante hasta cierto punto. Al no saber nada de estas creencias, toda la información resulta novedosa; sin embargo no profundiza en ninguno de los temas que aborda, desmitifica sólo hasta cierta medida.
