Chase Danger is a six-year-old super-spy. Actually, Chase was a super-spy since birth. His job: take out super bad guys who have super bad guy plans. Chase uses awesome spy gadgets like the "Chasin' Danger Super-Spy Speeder". In this book, Chase goes to stop his arch-nemesis, the evil Igor Fimple. Fimple teams up with the evil Mr. Crocs, another long-time enemy, and the villains try to take over the world with a mind-controlling sauce that they added to innocent pizzas at Chase's favorite restaurant! Will Chase Danger, Super-Spy, save the world from Igor Fimple's evil plans? Will he ever get a normal pizza again? Read the book to find out!

This is the first book in the Chase Danger Series. I've already asked my mom to get me the second book ( "Pirates of Pineapple Island" ) because I liked this one so much! OK, it's kind of hard to imagine a six-year-old kid doing all this stuff, but it is a fun story! It is a picture book with a lot of action and adventure. There is some comic type violence, but only Chase beating up Igor Fimple's goons/thugs/minions (whatever you prefer). The comic book like illustrations are great and add a lot to the story. All the spy gadgets and ear described in the book is really cool. I also really like that the book is written by Lisa Olivera and her son, Chase, who came up with most of the ideas. It has everything a kid could want in an adventure story- spies, bad guys, super cars, flying saucers, and pizza. The book also comes with a CD that you can listen to real people play out the book and read it to you and also hear songs created my Ms. Olivera's husband. The CD is called "read along theater" and it is more than just someone reading the story, it's like a whole play going on. That was cool! I recommend this book to children 6+!

Please visit http://superreadingkids.blogspot.com/... for the full review and my sons' thoughts on this wonderful book!

I remember when I was a little girl my parents collected The Gremlins books and in the back of these paperback goodies were a 45 record. (I know I just dated myself there a little but oh well) I would get up in the rocking chair and listen to that record as I followed along through the book. It was amazing and it was almost like I was a part of the action.

Chase Danger Mystery of the Special Sauce is even a hundred times better than that! It comes with a cd read a long that will narrate the book but it does much more than that. It has these awesome sound effects to go along with the action of the book. I personally, loved Chase's voice, it was adorable and is done by a real child. (At least it sounds like it)
The illustrations are colorful and bright and easily captures the child's attention. Even my 3 year sat in my lap the entire time while we listened to the story. He would pick out the pictures that went with what we were listening to at the same time.
This is a wonderful story with non stop action, creativity, humor, and the sweetest lil hero the world has ever seen. I would recommend this book to anyone with kids. It is truly fun to read for all ages!

From Back Cover: Chase Danger is the world's youngest super spy, ready to fight villains wherever they appear! In his first adventure he battles a giant octopus and terrifying scorpion, builds a super flying car, and takes a quick trip to space. All before dinner!

Chase Danger is a six-year-old super spy who really began his crime-fighting career at age two, when he rescued a friend's pet canary from the villain Mr. Crocs, who vowed revenge. The story opens with Chase climbing a mountain, where he defeats a gang of thugs run by Igor Fimple. Fimple jumps off the mountain after giving Chase a cryptic message.

Often, we must suspend our beliefs to read and enjoy fiction and fantasy. Occasionally, the story expects us to suspend more than we are willing or can and still enjoy the story. Chase Danger is one of those occasions. Chase, at six, has the ability to build super machines overnight, single-handedly defeat a gang of six large muscled men, pilot flying saucers, destroy odd objects, save himself and others, and lie to his parents without guilt.

It is not that Chase has all these abilities: to build things super quickly; fancy super spy equipment hidden where he needs it, when he needs it, "just in case"; or that he has clueless parents. The problem is the story lacks balance. If I counted correctly, Chase accomplishes 23 major actions within the 26 pages of actual story. Leaving out the two pages of his conquests at age two, and there is nearly one major action scene per page of story. There is no balance or any time to take a breather. Chase Danger is scene after scene of action—action, action, action . . . Both villains get away. Shouldn't super spies defeat the villains too? Are these two villains, Igor Fimple and Mr. Crocs, working together? There needs to be less action and more story.

The illustrations draw out the crazy story perfectly. The colors are bright and fill the page. Kids will love these. There is a feel of an action movie to the illustrations. Chase is a story with nothing but action and the illustrator did a great job capturing all of it. The illustrations will sell this book.

Chase is a one-boy wrecking crew. He is a super-spy for the younger set, defeating adult villains, yet the villains always escape. Perhaps to cause serial crimes? Young boys seven and under are the obvious audience who will like this book, and its hero, Chase Danger. They are young enough to see themselves as Chase, the super-spy. Older boys, older than age eight, may be reluctant to suspend their belief and accept a six-year-old as a super spy, even one like Chase, with all his super abilities.

Chase Dangers also comes with a "Read-Along CD." Chase Danger on CD is the exact story, word for word, as the book version. Listening to the story was leaps and bounds ahead of reading it. The special effects heard on the CD are superb. Fighting, bombs exploding, and lasers shoot, are some of the effects kids will love.

The background music is loud, so keep the volume at a lower setting. The many performers did a good job. The best, with superb inflections, variations in tone, and well characterized is the villain Igor Fimple. He also has the longest speech when he tells everyone what he is trying to do. In Chase Danger, in any story, it is better to SHOW the reader, rather than simply TELLING us. That is basic creative writing 101.

If your child likes action and lots of it, I suggest he listen to the CD and follow along. The interactive CD brings the story to life, and though it sounds like a cartoon, the large amount of action is not as distracting and any holes in the story go unnoticed.

Boys, and some girls, will love the well-done, studio quality Read-Along CD. Do read-along. If not, you will miss the wonderful illustrations in Chase Danger, Super Spy: The Mystery of the Special Sauce.

This is our two-part review. See what my son and I have to say. Check out more children's book reviews at http://motherdaughterbookreviews.com

SON SAYS:

What I liked and disliked:

I wish I could be a spy like Chase Danger. I would be brave like he is in the book. The book had a lot of action like when he destroyed the space ship and when he controlled the scorpion to destroy the whole cave. I liked the part where he was being tickled by the Tickle Machine because it was funny.

I liked the pictures in the book and I liked how they put a CD with the book. It was really funny to listen to the story that way.

Some things didn’t make sense like a kid couldn’t build something by himself like a car that turns into a flying car. And a little boy six years old can’t jump down from the Eiffel Tower because it’s too tall.

My bottom line:

I liked this book and I would recommend it to boys 6 and older because Chase is 6 years old so boys can pretend to be like him.

MOM SAYS:

What I liked and disliked:

Chase Danger Super Spy: Mystery of the Special Sauce is an action-packed, beautifully illustrated book sure to appeal to the imagination of young boys anywhere. What young boy doesn’t dream of being a super-spy, facing off with super-villains, playing with cool gadgets, and coming out a hero?

I think the best part of the book is simply the creativity involved in setting up the moments of tension in the story (e.g., Chase facing off with Igor Fimple on the mountaintop, Chase being tortured by the Tickle Machine, etc.) There are creative elements throughout the book that would keep a young reader engaged and my kids were totally engaged with the story as I was reading it to them.

The book includes a Read-Along CD of the story. The audio on the CD is excellent quality and the voices and sound effects really brought life to the story. I used to LOVE read-along albums (remember those 45′s?) when I was a little girl and my kids really enjoyed this one as well.

On the one hand, I think young boys would like this book because the illustrations are really great and there are elements in the story that would appeal to them (as mentioned above). However, from a parent’s perspective, I do have to comment that I did feel that the story itself was a bit difficult to follow and I would think this would particularly be the case for young children. In fact, I think this is the first time that my son struggled with trying to describe what the story was about. The overall plot itself is fairly complex for a 5 year old with two super-villains introduced in the story and a mysterious young girl who appears out of the blue to play a role in the story.

That being said, I know that the story was co-authored by a young boy and the book is infused with his wonderfully creative ideas. So, while the story felt a bit disjointed at times, there are so many great ideas in the book and I think that kids would enjoy reading it regardless.

My bottom line:

If I think about this book from the perspective of a young boy, I can see why this book would be appealing to them, especially if they listen to the book using the CD. From a parent’s perspective, I do have to say that the complex plot and non-linear story was at times difficult to follow, but I’m not the target audience! So, with that in mind, I would recommend it to boys 5 years and older.

The story features Chase Danger, a normal six-year-old boy who happens to be a super spy. He is easily enraged by bad guys, who he quickly hunts down and defeats.
In his first adventure, he fights a giant octopus, pilots a flying saucer through space, builds his own flying car, and visits Paris, where a "special sauce" is brewing to take over the world.
Along the way he befriends Ali Bali, another six-year-old spy.
More adventures featuring both of them are coming soon.

This is the best children's book ever!

My thoughts:
Chase Danger ~ I love the main characters name. Lisa is clever with the way she writes and the names she has given her characters. The story is action packed and fun. Outrageously far fetched, it will hold the young readers attention and leave them looking for more.

The illustrations are bold and colorful, the artwork detailed and nicely done. I love that it has the CD as well so children can either listen, read along or read alone - as well as taking it on the road.
