Rate this book
A young nurse in a small suburban hospital, Kate Montgomery works hard just to be average. From the outside, everything appears normal. Kate has convinced the world that she is just an ordinary girl who is good at her job. But when she goes to sleep, all of the normal world disappears.

She hasn’t had an easy life. Both of her parents were killed, and she was forced to grow up too fast.Trying to avoid the pressures of reality, Kate fantasizes about a love so real. She can’t seem to relate to any real man. She finds herself torn between the desire of truly knowing love, and wishing to just be normal.

Unfortunately, Kate isn't normal. She has a gift that she is not willing to admit. On her way to acceptance, Kate is forced to make decisions that will change the world as she sees it. Although she doesn't want to accept the truth, she cannot deny the love she feels. But when she is able to just let go and accept it, Kate will have a whole new level of realism to deal with.

When unearthly visitors make their presence known, Kate must decide if she is able to accept the unknown as real. With strange things occurring more often, Kate has no choice but to accept her gift and face the challenges head on just in order to survive. She questions if she is strong enough to survive, but with love at stake she finds the strength within herself to believe in her abilities.

Through her personal trials, Kate is led on a path of self-discovery that will change everything she has ever believed in.

The idea felt very fresh to me. I've never read anything quite like it. I also enjoyed Kate and Jack's chemistry. Jack was very much Kate's knight and shining armor, and Kate was a very real and relatable girl. Both characters were very likeable

However, there were a few issues for me. Overall I found Ms. Goodwin's writing style to be a bit schizophrenic. At times the writing dragged, and often even stalled. Certain everyday actions such as going to the stable to feed a horse were describe over and over again in detail in a way that made those particular parts of the story drag. For me, once would have been enough and them I would have preferred for Kate's trips to the stable, or walking the dog, or choosing an outfit to be glossed over a bit so that I could get back to the story.

There are alot of very sweet and tender moments in this book, especially when Kate discovers that Jack is real. All she longs to do is touch him as she has in her dreams. The love scenes are pretty pg-rated, filled with soft kisses and carresses and are generally very poignant and sweet. Miss Goodwin sticks with her own style of delving more into the emotion of the moment than the actual act. I tend to prefer a bit more heat, but I could tell that that sort of thing isn't the author's style and was glad she stuck with what she knew and did not try to force it.

I hate that I can't give it 5, because it would deserve it based on creativity and originality alone. However, I could tell by reading this book that the author is still developing her style. There were several bright spots in the book for me, little pieces of writing that shined through to show me that Miss Goodwin is indeed talented. Unfortunately a large part of the book tended to fall flat, I think due to the fact that the author at times writes the way she would talk, which doesn't always translate well on paper.

I feel that this book had alot of great ideas. It is obvious that the author is talented and creative. I just felt that there were a few wrinkles and problems with execution of those ideas. However, I will be reading the second book, Dark Dreams because I want to see what will happen next for Kate and Jack; I also want to see the development of Lisa Goodwin's voice as a writer. I look forward to seeing how much more she can blossom and grow.
