Oliver delivers a superb tale with plenty of positive and inspiring moments that balance the tragic circumstances of the lives touched upon within the characters of this intimate drama. Ken provides an accurate portrayal of a person crushed by tragedy. Despite the harrowing, raw, emotional narrative, Oliver balances his hard life with increasing moments of joy, pathos, and hope. The tale feels like a release from grief, with every day getting just a little better if we remember to let light, love, and other people back in. Road to Elysium by Kay A Oliver is a wonderful contemporary fiction novel. We meet Ken in a darkened room and learn that he is a man filled with grief. Because of his loss, his life consists of working, eating, and sleeping - though he doesn't do the last two well. But a home invasion launched by two unruly teens from a nearby neighborhood changes everything.
Although a work of fiction, I'm told that this novel is based loosely on a true story. Kay does a great job getting you to understand Ken - where he begins the journey and where he eventually ends. She allows us to see that progress isn't always linear, and that moving through grief takes time, patience, and understanding. If you like a story that delves into love, friendship, family, loss and grief, and personal growth, then this is a story for you.
